    Everyone,

Figured I would start a thread to get some folks together to plan some wheeling trips. It seems like a handful of us are into the same type of wheeling, so maybe we can start talking about some dates and places? I know I am down to travel a good bit to hit some trails, but I am committed to the offload lifestyle... Ha! At the same time, if I don't talk about it enough... I never end up putting dates on the calendar. Thus, this thread was born.

Locations I want to checkout in the near future:
    • DBBB again... its local, so why not?
    • Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route - COBDR - Link
    • Moab - Want to do this in the crawler and the truck
    • Red Clay Rally - Already signed up for May/June of 2019.

Who else wants to chime in?
    @Rheywood456 @KevinK @blackoutt @Hattori @MidwestOverlanders @zcarpenter92

Whats the most 2wd friendly trail of these? I like high speed running but I might have my air locker set up by then that'll assist me wheeling..

DBBB and sections of the KAT are very weekendable for me to.

Out for COBDR due to the next trip coming up being it for long ones for a while. We just a bunch of IDBDR this year and it was very well put together compared to some sketchy tracks I've attempted to follow along before.

Headed to Moab (4runner trip) and sightseeing national forests and parks across to So-Cal then Nor-Cal then back to the midwest starting in mid December! Not ideal timing for weather so hopefully we luck out but it's the time off I have to use it or lose it.

Red Clay Rally - I'd like to follow the tracks but I'm 100% non-competitive so I'd be a terrible team member!

@Thegr8punkin @Grey Wolf @speckmon all would have more thorough knowledge of wheeling in CO than I do. Most of my experience with mountain trails is from riding em on a four wheeler, but I know for a fact you can run Tin Cup Pass in a Tundra. One of the guys on the RMTC Facebook page did it in his a few months back.

See @blackoutt comment, but based on what I am seeing on the KAT, a good portion is doable in 2wd. Also, if you just get a winch up front, anything else is probably close to being doable. A bit of a pain in the ass but still doable.

Let's get something on the calendar!!! This thread is not just for planning, but to get some people together to go wheeling in the area. The more I dig, the more I am finding Tundra guys who like wheeling their trucks. Like I said, I am always down for a decent drive to hit up some trails.

Moab is on the bucket list for sure, but haven't done it. Let me know if you want some recommendations in SoCal, I just moved from there to Indiana 2 yrs ago. We were all over the place there.

RCR should be a blast. I'll be sure to save all the tracks and then put a trip together to go back. My buddy and I were just talking about the fact that we will probably want to go back through after we finish the rally.

Colorado is definitely on the bucket list. We want to do the COBDR next year, but if its anything like I think it is, we'll be going back for sure. We want to do Black Bear pass and all the other famous trails over there too. Maybe more around late 2019 and into 2020 though.

I am always in for a good wheeling trip! @KevinK and I have a list of a few places going we want to visit out this way (since we’ve both just recently moved to the Mid-West from Arizona) that we will have convert to this page to help the ball rolling.

Until February, I’ll be on a tight schedule for work where I won’t be taking any days off (I’ll still have weekends off) but an extra day for Friday or Monday always helps on trips with longer drives.

I’ll look at our list and then report back.

I know you know, but for everyone else, I am Located in south Kansas City! A little more west than most.

My big problem is that I’ve got a built crawler so a lot of tundra stuff is icecream runs and as @ColoradoTJ knows, I don’t do well on ice cream runs

I dont know if I would do Black bear pass in a long tundra. The switchbacks are no joke. I did it in 2017 on a big KTM 1190R and didnt have the turning radius to do 2 of them without jockying around. Wranglers had to do some 5 point turns to get through them.

I may be in for some fun. I'm just southeast of Kansas City.

    good looks @zcarpenter92

i'm down for whatever, BESIDES this run. I've heard of larger trucks going through, but i'm not about to. there'd be even more odds of a fuck up with multiple trucks in a caravan and different (lower) skill leveled drivers.

that being said, I've been all over the place out here, not that i'm anywhere near an expert, i just don't GAF if my truck takes a beating getting to an awesome vantage point and/or camping spot on top of a mountain. i'm slowly getting more and more armor and mods to allow for more gnarly and remote stuff too.

most the BLM land here has some pretty great trails. i like to get out into the thick as far as i can make it without going through beer withdrawals, bringing me back to base camp :D

oh and there's also a big thread going in the Colorado section of a larger meet next summer for camping/wheeling i'll try to find it

    edit: found it https://www.tundras.com/threads/tundras-com-colorado-road-trip-meet-up.33040/

Yep...a 4X outing is only as good as it's weakest link. A lot needs to be considered for sure. It's hard to mix the "no scratches for me/no skids" crowd with those of us who have tried to make our trucks trail worthy within reason of course. Another thing that needs to be considered is that these famous passes in CO are famous for a reason. Everyone and their brother wants to hit these passes once spring hits. Lots of everything up there. It does get better after Labor Day when most of the looky loo's have left. After Labor Day it's mostly experienced locals hitting the passes before the snows hit. The aspens are killer.....

Tin Cup is doable in our Tundras. Clearance is the main thing. Tin Cup is considered a moderate trail for 4X4's. Most of it you can do it in 2WD. The old Tin Cup alternate route is strictly 4X. Pretty rocky and narrow with our trucks.

Actually "you" could do it in 2wd with that LSD. You have the clearance already. It just gets real bouncy at times and the extra grip of the LSD would improve things considerably. I haven't been over that way since 2007. Pretty sure nothing has changed much up there. Nice area actually, but what is area isn't nice here?? heh..heh @ColoradoTJ knows some crazy ass "trails" where we might have an "interesting time"..

I remember the alternate route on the downhill side into Tin Cup, it was rather slow going on four wheelers even. Granted, we were running it on utility ATV’s and not sport quads.

Dang... lots of replies on this and I hadn't checked back. Black Bear pass... I have heard of a group of power wagons do it. Soo... still need more research, but definitely heard about the technicality of it.

I guess the intent for this thread is to get some folks together on a trip. Seems like the Midwest guys are a bit more spread out, but I am still down to do some driving for the Tundras to Sedona type thing, sans the 30hr drive one way for some of us. Plenty of places to check out on the Midwest that I need/want to check out. Obviously the trucks aren't crawlers, but I have one for that already, but as much as I hate to say it, I am thinking more "overlanding" trips.... Considering doing the TAT or KAT soonish. Or go to the UP in Michigan next spring and do the 1k trail they have mapped out up there, once the snow melts.

Just looked up the KAT. Looks awesome, and quite long! Would be an awesome extended weekend trip! Depending on where the start would be, should be 10hr drive or so from KC. Not terrible if we’ve got 4-5 days off

The KAT easy tracks would be all doable in a 4x4 tundra minus a couple of tight squeezes. Some of the hard tracks would be possible with skids/sliders and more ground clearance depending on wheelbase. There's some hard tracks that you can barely fit a side by side through and are really only for the 2 wheeled adventuring and people who don't care about their bodywork. That being said I've done a long weekend on the KAT with a guy in a full size Dodge on only the easy trails and while it was a lot more interesting for him than me in the 4runner he made it everywhere just fine. Weather plays a big role too, rainy weekends and poorly drained trails make it ever changing. An easy trail becomes a wallowed out mess real quick. While I like to challenge the rig every once in a while, we really enjoy getting out to do the "overlanding" thing. See some cool sights, maybe find a hiking trail or cave to explore a little, and camp out of the rig at a new place every night.

For planning purposes I'm tied up through the end of the year for sure but come January/February I'd be down for weekend trips to anywhere on the KAT or just trails around DBBB/slade area. I would also be interested in going back to Land Between the Lakes. I went last year but most of the 300 roads were closed for a youth turkey hunt that weekend, poor planning on our part. I'd also be interested in a UP weekend in the spring, never been there but looks beautiful.

Just looked this up, you could either be in Boulder CO or Slade KY in the same amount of time! I know what I'd pick!

If you're a purist and want to do the entire KAT in one loop it would take 5-7 trail days depending on pace and if you want to hit any of the hard sections, size of the group, etc. I like to go with small groups and cover lots of ground. There's also some areas on the eastern most section where legal camping can be difficult or impossible to find so it ends up wasting a few hours to get somewhere that night to stay. It's a pretty diverse tour of old coal country and an eye opener for how some people live.
