Anyone know how to remove steering wheel on 2016?

Can anyone give me some help on removing the steering wheel on my 2016 Limited Crewmax? I'm looking to replace the stock leather wrapped one with a modified OEM wheel with either wood or carbon fiber grips. Can't seem to find good DIY directions on removing the wheel.

You start by removing the airbag (not sure how) then there will be a nut behind it. Try looking for airbag removal videos.

 

You know in movies when they're trying to diffuse a bomb and they're not sure whether to cut the blue wire or the red wire? That's what it feels like when you're disconnecting an airbag. You look away, hold your breath, squint your eyes and make a constipated look on your face and pray it doesn't blow. Not fun.

So I know this is a little late but in case someone else finds this thread. I used the link above as partial instructions on how to change out the steering wheel

It worked great. I am not a mechanic but I do work with tools in my work.

So disclaimer ....proceed at your own risk. It worked out for me.

MAKE SURE THE GROUND IS DISCONNECTED FROM THE BATTERY

Unplug the negative terminal of the battery just like he says. Make sure there's no way that it could re-touch the battery. Wait 15 minutes.
I waited longer .....and kept the door open to suck down any possible charge left. Like the post before ....I was really worried about setting off the airbag!

The pictures he has show how to take the airbag off with the torx wrench. Just the two bolts in the side and then firmly remove it. It doesn't fall right off.

You need to unplug the airbag which is not shown in his pictures but there is a video on YouTube that tells you how to unplug it. Just pop up the clips on the connectors at the bag itself and then unplug the airbag and the ground tab. I didn't try to unplug it at the winder in the steering column. Just unplug it from the airbag and slip the wires back through when you take the steering wheel off.

The clips to unplug the steering controls and the cruise control are easy to unplug. (Those do unplug from the junction at the column...you'll see)

Loosen the bolt on the steering wheel. After that I used a $16 steering wheel puller I bought from O'Reilly auto parts... it popped it right off. (Be certain you have your car facing straight and the wheel in the center before you take it off and start the project)

Slip the airbag wires through the old wheel as you pull it off.

Then put those same wires through the same hole in the new wheel and put the wheel on. It's very obvious that the wheel is in the middle when you put it on because if you put it on too far to the left or right it's very apparent that you did it wrong. The gears are not super fine. I was really worried about that but it didn't matter.

Then put it all back together the same way you took it off. You might need to take the steering controls off of your original wheel and put them on the new wheel. It's not hard there are only two screws that hold each one on. Tuck the wires under the clips on your new wheel like they were and plug them in.

I used an impact wrench and didn't get out of control to screw the new wheel on. Just gave it a few good hammers on the air wrench. It all worked great and if you use that other guys link shouldn't have any problems adding the things I just told you.

By the way this is a 4runner leather wheel 2016 put on a 2016 tundra. They are exactly the same! It's almost ridiculous that the SR5 upgrade pack doesn't include a leather wheel.

 

Looks good! Bothers the hell out of me that a $42k truck didnt come with a leather wrapped wheel as well. Maybe I'll consider swapping for the leather. Wife's 2016 4runner Trail has a leather wheel like you pictured, but with black trim instead of silver. Would look great in my Tundra! lol

 

Hmm wonder if I could swap a 12 tundra steering wheel with a 14?

Did you have a Toyota part number for the 4 Runner steering wheel?

 

That is exactly what I want to do to my truck, did you buy the wheel new or from a salvage yard?

I bought the wheel on eBay. And it was presumably from a salvage 4Runner. I got lucky on the price and got an extra set of controls too....I used my original controls JIC. Best price I could find at dealer was $600. The initial part number is the same as the tundra. The last digits were different. I was worried it would not fit until I did the job.
But I do think that this proves they are the same wheel regardless of the part number and there aren't some weird small differences. The controls from the tundra fit right in it. So when you are looking, look for 4Runner wheels too. I have a late model trail 4Runner. It's the exact same wheel. This is the eBay pic

This is the new one I was thinking about but didn't. 45100 I think is the base part number and then the other numbers maybe the intended vehicle and style leather etc.
