Alright guys, I'm looking to purchase me an air intake kit for my 5.7L Tundra. I'm stuck between the thought of an open concept where more free air would be accessible but most likely warmer due to engine bay heat and then the opposed concept of enclosed, cold air intake that just pulls cooler air from the wheel well. I already have an upgraded exhaust with dual outs from a Super-40 series muffler from Flowmaster (dual-in/dual-out). I want better gas mileage. What are your testimonials based off your experiences?

Just my opinion having had both through the years, I would save your money and keep it stock, even the filter. Promises of more hp and gas milage are very minuscule if any at all. All hype so they can sell them!

Tundras are already equipped with a CAI. No performance gains to be had, unless you just like the way another box looks or the sound you get.

CAI will not really make a difference since the OEM setup actually is already doing that, and a more open intake means you don't filter the air as well as OEM so you risk sucking dirty hot air into your engine.

I really do enjoy the sound of the Trd cai and dual exhaust combo! Everybody keeps repeating that stock is cai, yes it is but when you increase the amount of air and smooth out the airflow with a straight run to the plenum there is an increase to be had. Considering I live at 6300' above sea level any little bit helps.

I've had CAI on a few different vehicles over the years to include my 2013 5.7 and noticed no gains. So if you want to spend a bunch of money, get a lot more noise in the cabin of your truck, buy a CAI. Or you can get a good reusable air filter and keep stock air box.

Save your money. I live in Denver Metro area at 5280 and elevation goes up from there. You will see little to no difference at all swapping in a aftermarket CAI unless you like more noise. Going to a hot air design makes no sense imho. K&N does sell a mini kit that is basically a drop in filter with a smooth replacement plenum tube to get some improvement in air flow.

Afe has the same thing too. I have it, and saw no difference other than sound.

I'm selling mine for same reason didn't make a difference besides noise and I did notice low end torque was lost so I installed TRD drop in filter and TRD air flow accelerator and called it good

Cool. I appreciate all the good feedback. Thanks fellas! One last thing... did any of you do an ECU reflash to compensate for the aftermarket intake & exhaust?

Toyota has a really good design for its stock intake in both the Tundra and Tacoma. Unless you have money burning a hole in your pocket, stick with stock and just replace the filter. The only CAI I would get is the TRD but even then I don't see how it improves that much over stock. Just do a filter swap and you'll be set.

Great thread. I was considering a CAI right up until reading this thread. Thanks!
