Hey guys I'd like to introduce my self. I've been on Tacoma world for 4 years and my 2004 Tacoma has been amazing! Now it has about 150k on it and I'm starting the hunt for a new truck. I'm debating on getting another Tacoma or going to a 1/2 ton truck. This past week we had a pretty good snow storm so I figured I would go try out the new Tacomas in the snow. Boy were they scary!, people on Tacoma world said the abs sucked on the new ones and that's a fact! I was just in the Toyota parking lot and tapped the brakes and they truck didn't want to stop at all. So we took it out definitely like the new Tacoma. Like the size and the decent fuel economy. I'm a heavy equipment operator so I do about 500 miles a week in my truck so fuel economy is important. After I got out of the tacoma there was a 2014 tundra limited with the 5.7. Man that thing is sweet!!! I drove it. It stopped in a dime in the snow. Went great in the snow. Super comfy ride and loved that it was loaded since the tacoma doesn't offer that only in their ugly limited version. I fell in love with the tundra. Only thing that worries me is the fuel mileage. Sticker says 13 city and 18 highway man that really sucks. Chevy 1500 is saying 18 city and 22 high way. So it's between the chevy 1500 and the tundra. Not a ford fan at all. Or do I stick with another Tacoma that scares the shit out of me in the snow and has a hard time pulling my Atv trailer? Any help would be appreciated. And no I'm not a car guy. If I was I would be driving a vw golf in a diesel. That fuel mileage is amazing 30 city and 45 highway

I traded my Tacoma for a Tundra a few months ago, but that was to fit my needs for more cargo and interior space. If fuel economy is important, you're not going to like the Tundra with the 5.7L. I'm currently averaging 13-14 using cruddy winter blend fuel and that's 90-95% highway miles. If your trailer is heavy enough to give your Tacoma a hard time, then it sounds like maybe full-size is your best option for both safety's sake as well as long-term wear and tear on a smaller truck. I have only had to use my ABS once in the Tundra so far, but that was on dry pavement (avoiding a clown) so I can't speak to having it react badly on ice like the Tacomas do.

13-14 mpg ouchie:( My tacoma is getting 18 on the free way doing 75. And ya I pull that trailer a hand full of times so the new Tacomas have more power guess I'll check the tundra off my list even though she was beautiful

I traded in my Taco last year for a Tundra. It was only a few miles per gallon difference for me (I had 33"s on the Taco and 35" on the Tundra)
I enjoy the extra room, more power, etc on my Tundra

I get between 11.6-12.2 on the Tundra as it stands

I'm also in CO and the brakes are great...even in the snow. I think the nannies are too sensitive though

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't trade my Tundra back to a Tacoma for anything, but it's not economical in any way. I'm already way too spoiled from the comfort and space in comparison. Maybe someone with the 4.6L will chime in as to how well it does when towing. I have talked to a guy with one who claims to get up to 22 mpg highway with one, but it was not enough oomph for my particular needs as I'll be loading it heavy and towing at the same time.

That's exactly why I want it the space and the comfort. The new tundras ride like a dream. On top of it that 5.7 flys!

The 4.6 has to work that much harder to maintain speeds opposed to the 5.7..so, the MPG may not be as accurate....

Good point. The 5.3 chevy says 16 and 22 that's almost exactly what the Tacoma gets. I should just drive the Tacoma into the ground

just get the Tundra... I traded my Tacoma in for my Tundra last September, and haven't looked back honestly. I had a 2nd gen Tacoma, and my MPG's weren't noticeably different than what I get in my Tundra. My truck's computer says 15.5mpg currently, but I did it manually at the pumps the other day and it was just over 17mpg. I have a 4x4 crewmaxx with the 5.7l, and don't go easy on it...

My 5.7 Tundra gets 18.5 MPG cruising at 70 MPH on Summer blend fuel. Of course, its a bit lighter than most being a regular cab with a 6.5' bed. My second gen. Taco was getting about the same on the highway, but a few MPG better in town. Not much difference really, but if I was driving 500 miles a week, I might feel otherwise. I'd definitely stick with Toyota if you're putting that kind of miles on your truck. The Chevy will be less reliable, and I think the 2014 Silverados look absolutely hideous, personally.

I do 17-18 on the highway during the summer with mine. Right now in mixed driving and winter blend I'm averaging 13-14. Traded my 09 Taco for the Tundra back in May. Miss the Tacoma once in awhile but can't see ever going back to a midsize.

I will say that with all the snow I had my Taco in, I never had issues stopping or felt it was dangerous the way many report. I like the interior on the 2014 Tundra, although I'm still not completely a fan of the exterior. I could probably live with it in TRD trim. I looked at the F150 hard when I got the Tundra, and might even be driving one had the dealer actually wanted to make a deal. They were pretty much just taking off the factory incentive that was available at the time which was not that much and didn't want to budge a lot more than that. Couldn't get a similar equipped truck for what Toyota made me a deal with the Tundra. Happy so far with it. Just trying to avoid falling into the money pit on mods like I did with the Taco.

If MPG's are that important you won't be happy when you hit the pumps in a tundra. I have only put 400 miles on my 14 5.7 CM in 7 weeks. You can see in my banner my current mpg, which is 90% city. Winter blend gas and still breaking in if that matters any.
I traded my 05 v6 Tacoma in for it for more rear seat room to accommodate two car seats in the back. Also wanted more power, more brakes, and something comparable to a tank in case the family and I get waffled by some idiot. It also had to be an auto because the wife couldn't drive my 6spd manual taco.
The 2nd gen tacos have more power than your 1st gen, and I never had any ABS issues with my taco, I thought it stopped great in the snow.
I think a 2nd gen taco would fit u well.

Just calculate they yearly difference in cost from roughly 14 mpg to your 18 mpg... that amount is what you've been paying yourself not to ride in a sexy 5.7l..! Ha, I've got a crewmax with 20s and avg 13.5 to 14. My knee doesn't hurt anymore from being crammed in the Tacoma and I feel like I'm driving a real truck (no offense to Tacoma owners). During our ice storm it handled like a champ all the way to the liquor store and back! If you need a truck, you can't beat the tundra. And if you don't need a truck, who cares because it's just so damn awesome to drive!

Ya you guys are all right. The tundra is out :( Fuel mileage is important. Buuuuut I do have a go fast toy so I still have a toy for my need for speed. It's a fully restored 1968 ford f 100 with a built 390 pushing about 450 horse

They are the tires that came with the truck when I bought it in may. I'm thinking I'll run them until this coming summer. I'm going to lift it in June. My plans are to get the ultimate lift kit with coachbuilder shackles. What size tire do you think I can stuff on it with a 2.5 or 3 inch lift? I'm just trying to get my money's worth with what's on it now.

I'd like to see a video of that or at least a pic. Sounds fun. Hell what are you wanting a tundra for then. Tacoma and an old truck??? If I were you I'd put about 6 months of tundra payments into that truck and make it nice as hell, if it isn't already!

    I am running 315/70/18 with a 3" OME
I removed the mud flaps, and had to do a little hacking on the corners of the front bumper along with some additional hacking of the plastic behind the bumper.
I am going to add a 1" spacer lift to the front to level it out, as the rear is 1" higher.

Bummer on the Tundra, but yippee on the Ford! My last truck (before the Taco) was a '69 F-100 4WD with a 360. Those FE engines are frigging bulletproof! Now you want to talk about crappy MPGs...

It's a full frame up restored 1968 f 100 2wd long bed with a ford 390bb. Bored and stroked to a 411, edelbrock aluminum race heads, mild cam, and intake. Msd pro ignition that's not pictured but added. Holly double pumper 750 cfm. Not pictured but added with the ignition. 10:5:1 high compression pistons, B&M fully built auto 4 speed. Auburn rear end with posi. And the frame is so clean I actually wax it. No in cab videos yet since it's snowing and the roads are all crap in ohio

Well damn that is nice! So you don't even need to dump money in it. Hey I love my truck but you've got two trucks and at least one paid for. maybe you should wait for Toyota to put out the diesel tundra in 2017... then you could sell both trucks and have a paid for tundra!

Hmm Toyota Diesel engine or other mfg like Cummins?
I assume they would make their own.

Just read that Nissan plans to put a Cummins in the Titan and Toyota is also looking to do the same.

I had a 2011 4.6L Tundra for almost 2 yrs. Towed an enclosed snowmobile trailer quite a bit in the winter time in the mountains chasing snow without any issues. The truck had decent giddy up but the seemed to like to shift a lot & honestly didn't feel it get the best mileage & wished I had just opted for the 5.7L especially the shifting drove me crazy.
I ended up trading it back for a 2013 Tacoma mainly due to it not fitting in many places I had to park out in the woods & my dog had severe anxiety in it. Yeah I know trading due to the darn dog!! He never had an issue in my Tacoma & when I went back to one he settled right back down no anxiety go figure?? I do miss the creature comforts, the roominess, and the big bed.

OP both my 2GENs tacomas towed my enclosed trailer without any complaints other than the mpg while towing. Granted v8 trumps v6 but the newer tacomas are no slouch especially with the factory tow package.

Since Toyota is big on multiple platform applications, I would suspect that if they did eventually put a diesel into the Tacoma, it would be the same one they put in the Hilux. As for the Tundra, I believe that is the truck Toyota is considering using a Cummings in reference to the Nissan Titan.

Really? So many that I've talked to here in AZ say the mileage is not that good. Are you running synthetic oil and maybe a K&N filter?
