Figured I’d start a thread for just day to day talk. Mostly for the things that don’t rate a thread on their own.
Some of you may remember the detail I did on my daughter’s new car back on July 29th:

    129E9C17-1C60-4EB5-8E61-903EF021D072.jpg

Car was brand new. Did Iron X, clay mitt, and wash with Reset. Sealed it with my standard Hydro2 and Reload combo at the time.
I don’t often have a case where I let products live out their full life, but she has been away at college for months, and just came home Saturday. It’s the first time I’ve seen it since she left.

First thought, it still looked somewhat decent, and she hasn’t washed it at all. That’s mainly the color though. MGM just isn’t going to show a lot of dirt. The sealants definitely helped for a time though.

Did a a quick rinse off yesterday, just to see how it held up. Zero beading, water stuck to it. I can’t say exactly how long the Hydro2 and Reload combo lasted, but it’s completely gone. So we know the max on that combo is under four months in Texas weather.

I'm in a similar situation with my daughter's car.....she's away at school and only been home one time that was long enough for me to wash it. Three months outside in NJ does not compare to four in Texas heat, but I'm happy to report the (3+ month) application of McKees HiDef was still holding up very well. I was able to give it a quick wash, and hit it with a little McKees Trademark Extender Spray Wax, until this week's Thanksgiving break comes and I can really assess it. I can pretty much wash cars until February where I live, so it will probably get the full treatment when she comes home for Christmas. This go-round will be a test of Jescar PowerLock plus.

I’m thinking about giving CQuartz a whirl on hers. It’s smaller so I can fit it in my garage. Being pretty new, and gray, paint correction shouldn’t be as intensive as mine will be.

I do really like Powerlock Plus also.

Wow Jason I'm kinda surprised that the reload and hydro2 didnt have any life left at all. But I suppose you can chalk that up yo UV light, heat, and zero washes. That was really a very good test and good to know. I'm curious how long the powelock or beadmaker would last in those conditions. But I have a feeling we may not find out now that you have a test subject for your first ceramic job ;)

I’m going to try that instead. I figure it won’t have time to do the ceramic. I applied Powerlock this afternoon, and will top it with Beadmaker tomorrow.

Very cool. Hydro2 is a great product that adds some good paint protection really fast and effortlessly. It’s certainly very viable as a stand alone, though it doesn’t provide much, if any gloss on its own. When combined with a good spray sealant like Reload or Beadmaker, it makes for a great look and lasts a good while. I’m curious as to how it holds up in your climate versus mine. This time of year there’s probably not a ton of difference, but during the summer, the heat and humidity really takes a toll on whatever is being used.

Double Black is the branding used by Renny Doyle. He’s a pro detailer who is on board with P&S. He actually got his start as an aircraft detailer as a teenager, and has become the leader of the Air Force One Detailing Team. These guys go once a year and detail the original Air Force One that carried Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon. It’s a pretty big honor that they take very seriously.

Beadmaker has become part of the routine for the aircraft.

    http://detailersofairforceone.com/

P&S was originally a supplier for commercial car washes, and just a few years ago started making products for consumers. They developed Beadmaker, and brought Renny Doyle on board to become the face of the product.

The Double Black Paint Gloss Spray and Shine is a decent product. It’s not the best quick detailer I’ve used, but the price is very good. I have a gallon myself, and it’s an effective clay lube for sure.

I went overboard with all the sales last week, so I have a good bit of product coming in to try. I’m most excited about some Blackfire products I ordered from Autogeek. I’ve heard a lot of good things about them, and have been wanting to try them out. I also got a gallon of their clay lube on sale for 15.00 on clearance.

I also had the chance to try out a few interior cleaners last week. I was most impressed with Shine Supply’s “Clean n Shine”. Cleans very well, and leaves a good color behind without being too shiny or greasy. So far I’ve really liked everything I’ve gotten from them, with the exception of their glass cleaner. I wasn’t impressed at all with that. Their Wise Guy Tire Cleaner is second to none. I believe @SouthBoundSteve uses that as well. Shine Supply’s service is outstanding.

Some thoughts from work I did while I was off last week:

I washed all of our vehicles thanksgiving morning. Used Reset on all of them. It’s hands down my favorite soap. Didn’t use the foam cannon, or I would have used CG Honeydew.

Daughter’s Tundra: It was already coated with Powerlock. I just washed it, didn’t add anything. It still looked great.

Other daughter’s car: At the suggestion of @Pudge , I applied Powerlock, and topped it with Beadmaker. It shined up nicely, but didn’t feel like it bonded as well as it does over Hydro2. It may be because Powerlock is thicker. It’s in paste form, so it may make it harder for Beadmaker to integrate. We’ll see how it holds up.

Wife’s Sequoia: It already had Powerlock, and I decided to try Reload on top. It actually came out fantastic. The Reload seemed to work a lot better with Powerlock than Beadmaker did. It may also be because Powerlock has been on hers a lot longer, and has degraded enough to make a topper more effective. It did remind me about what a great product Reload is. I’d gotten away from it in recent months, and it was good to use it again. It looks outstanding.

My Tundra: I think I may have too many different things on it. I had tried the Powerlock/Collinite combo on it, and wasn’t impressed. I’d then applied Shine Supply Punch It, which provided really good results. Felt very protected, and beaded very well. I washed it, then decided to throw some Beadmaker on top. Like on my daughter’s car, it just didn’t feel right. Usually I would have used Eraser in between trying all of these, but I didn’t, and it negatively affected results. It looks good, but it doesn’t have the same slickness it normally does. It also doesn’t shine like it should. Too much layering is likely the culprit. I’ll likely try and strip everything back off on my next wash.

Had some family in from Oklahoma, and one of the guys always wants to check out my new products when he’s in town, he has a silver Silverado. Did a wash with Reset, added Hydro2 and Beadmaker. It produced great results, and he was very happy. I think it would have been much more impressive had I had the time to use Iron X and clay mitt beforehand. Silver also isn’t the best color to show things off with.

A side note: There is a guy I run into at the gas station pretty regularly in the morning. He always remarks on how nice my truck looks. He complimented the truck once again this morning. It’s pretty cool to get that kind of attention. A while back, the mailman who delivers to my office asked if he could take pictures and bring his wife by to see my truck. He’s been trying to talk her into getting a black Tundra for them, and she keeps telling him they always look dirty. He wants to show her mine to convince her. Guess he’ll leave out the part about how much work goes into it.

This is one I’ve really had a hard time settling on one product so far. Admittedly, I don’t do my interior as often as I should, but I would put the following as my favorites:

    Waxaddict Interior Cleaner
    Shine Supply Clean n Shine
Lucas Oil Interior Detailer ( Great cleaner, but I don’t like the smell. It smells like cinnamon, which I don’t care for. If not for the smell, it would probably be my number one. It’s available at Walmart.)
Chemical Guys Silk Shine is good also.

My wife is the only one of us that has leather seats, but I’ve really had success with Chemical Guys Leather Quick Detailer. This also works great on furniture. It’s available at Walmart also.
    Lexol works very well also.

I have some Waxaddict leather cleaner that I’ve not tried yet. I’ll update if I get around to trying it.

So, yesterday’s work started horrendously, but ended ok.

I ran by a self service wash bay while I was out, hoping to give my truck a quick cleaning.

I had gotten some P&S Pearl Auto Shampoo during Black Friday sales, and wanted to try it out. https://psdetailproducts.com/i-17540069-pearl-auto-shampoo.html

So normally, when I use a self service bay, I take Reset with me. I’ve had no problems with it. Even if it dries before rinsing, it comes right off. This stuff did not. I hadn’t expected to have to rush, as the temperature was under 80. Unfortunately, parts of the truck did dry before I rinsed, and this stuff would not rinse off.
I also managed to introduce some new micro scratches into the paint. This baffled me, as I used the same techniques I always do. When leaving, I noticed the truck in the next bay was covered in sand, that the guy was washing off. I suspect that some of that sand was blowing around in the air as he was spraying, and some of it got introduced to my paint between initial rinse and my wipe down. Something I now know to look out for when using a public wash bay.

Finished up in town, and got home to try and correct my horrible looking truck. I did at this point find a good use for Ammo Frothe. I sprayed the truck down with it, and rinsed it off. That stuff did a great job of lifting the sand off.
I followed up with a rinseless wash with ONR.
Then, since I had some new scratches to address, I decided to use wax, which is not at all a regular thing for me. (Wax is much better at covering scratches than sealant is.) I decided to break out the sample I had of Waxaddict Vortex. This stuff is $250.00 a jar. I can’t see myself spending that on a wax, but Richard had sent me a small sample size with one of my orders a while back.
I will say it looks amazing. Wow. I can’t say enough how beautiful my truck looks with this product. Very expensive, but it is incredible. I can definitely see why someone who uses wax, and has the budget would love this stuff.
I’ve used very little paste wax to this point, so my technique wasn’t good. It was very difficult for me to remove, but I’m pretty positive it’s because I used too much product. With the sample size, I was able to get the hood, front fenders, and two doors. I started with the hood, and spread it thick. Doing the other parts, I was trying to stretch it, and used a lot less. It was much easier to remove from those panels, and they look just as good as the hood. I’m guessing if I hadn’t over applied at first, I could have done the whole truck. It was a learning experience. Looking this morning, there are still a few spots I missed.

I finished the truck with another sample I had: Blackfire Carnauba Spray Wax. It did a great job also, not as good as Vortex, but cheaper and easier.

Back to the P&S Pearl Shampoo: I don’t want to leave a bad impression of this product. I went back and read the directions last night. It was highly concentrated, and I shouldn’t have used it the way I did. It’s dilution ratio is similar to ONR or Ech20, so once again, I used way too much. That’s why it wouldn’t rinse off. It was my mistake. I’ll use it properly next time.

So, overall, the truck looks great today. I just had to learn a few lessons along the way. Goes to show that no matter how experienced you think you are, you still need to pay attention to what you are using, follow instructions, and use good practices.

Jim @driverdog has made a point of telling me to always read instructions. I’m guessing he’s adamant about it because he’s either made the same mistakes, or watched others do it.

I’m going to just give up using the self serve bays I guess. Took my stuff today, stopped by on the way home, everything’s going great. Get it washed, start rinsing it off, and the maintenance guy fires up a leaf blower and starts blowing the parking lot.
Place is full of cars getting washed, and they pick then to start blowing dirt everywhere.

I just left and came home and washed it again.

Hit 40° here in CT today and I had a couple hours of free time. Did a rinseless wash, since the hoses are packed away and water valves are shut off. Then went over the truck with some beadmaker to seal it up and add some shine. Great product! Very slick and shiney, and even in cold temps ours easy to apply.

Question for you guys... I'm starting to think ceramic coating/clear bra is just to damn expensive for me here in the Bay Area, so I'm considering just going th wash/polish/sealant route... do you guys have any suggestions for a new truck protocol? I am thinking wash/polish/seal with Wolfgang product, then beadbreaker.... I will have to do all this outside on a nice day, so can't get too crazy with controlled environments....

Im not trying to make you spend money but the ceramic coating will make life much easier especially you CA guys. IT will stay cleaner longer.
For me I enjoy washing, claying, and waxing my truck so I didn't do ceramic but for the wife's truck I went ceramic coating to help me out. No car wash places for her so I have to handle it.

Just think about how much time you want to invest in maintaining or if you enjoy it stick with what you said.

Well.... I'm actually moving to a mountain town in CO soon.... so I probably won't have a garage, and a hell of a lot more winter/gravel/grime on the daily basis. It's probably worth it to just be able to just wash the truck and enjoy it, but my inner cheap-ass is coming through....

In that case definitely ceramic coating. It will make it much easier to wash that crap off.

I mostly use carpro ech2o mixed with some distilled water in a sprayer, sometimes I add a little reload to it but did not this time, because I was using beadmaker after. I also use 2 buckets of hot water, one had a little ech2o in it which I soak my towels in, one is just water to rinse towels. Also use a bunch of dry towels.

I also used some griots speed shine this time around, I originally got it as a clay lube but am really liking it as a detail spray.

    Here's a pic in progress.

You’d be surprised, but even on a new truck, paint decon can make a huge difference. If you have the time and budget, I’d start with Iron-X, clay bar or mitt, followed by another good wash. Then you can look at sealants.
Hydro2 topped with Beadmaker is a great combo. Jescar Powerlock is also fantastic, but a bit more labor intensive.

Love seeing your work Sean. That blue pops beautifully every time.

Optimum No Rinse is also a fantastic product, and a bit cheaper / easier to get. I use both ONR and Ech20. ONR cleans very well, you can’t go wrong with it. The benefit of Ech20 is that it seems to leave more shine and protection. It is slightly more difficult to use. Not hard by any means, but it’s thicker, so you have to pay a little more attention wiping it off. It can streak if you miss spots.

@Pudge my daughter got home from school yesterday. I didn’t have a chance to wash her car. I will this week, so I’ll be able to report how well the Powerlock/Beadmaker combo held up. When I applied it, I got the feeling Beadmaker didn’t bond as well with the Powerlock as it does with Hydro2. We will see. It didn’t feel incredibly slick to the touch yesterday though.

@driverdog I put Fo Show on my daughter’s Tundra yesterday. It looks good, but it was really “grabby” when I was applying it. Is that your experience as well?
