I’m needing a new daily driver as all my vehicles are old and high miles and I’m about to move further away from work. I’ve been looking looking at the 2019 Tacoma sr 2.7 4x4. My first choice would be a new tundra of course but there a little out of my price range and I can get a Tacoma for under $28000. My concern is how is 2.7 for highway driving, I don’t want a new truck that can’t run over 70mph. Any info on these trucks is much appreciated as me and my father are both interested in purchasing one.

I never had a 2.7 but knew a few people that did.
They don't get all that great gas mileage considering it's a 4cyl. I had a 2016 v6 Tacoma and could squeeze 25 mpg out of it (2wd). It was not a very fun truck to drive though. Mainly because the transmission is geared only for fuel economy, so it was constantly shifting.

I had a 1996 tacoma for 12 years with the 2.7 5spd , was fine in that body, if fact my buddy I sold it to still drives it.

it's in my pic to the left.

I came from a 2016 with the 3.5 V6 and it was not enjoyable to drive. Constantly reving high to maintain freeway speeds. But I was also on 33inch A/T tires and was lifted.

My 09 Taco had the 2.7L with manual tranny. It was ok. Drove it to AK and hauled two snowmobiles back with a 17ft trailer.

My father had a 18 taco with 3.5 V6. It is irritating to drive because the transmission constantly changes gears on the highway to maintain speeds or geared for fuel economy. It was sluggish and after he drove my 18 tundra 5.7 he then traded for a new tundra and never looked back.

I test drove a 2017 SR5 Tacoma before I bought my tundra. I've had several Tacoma's in life, most of them 2.7's, 1st gens mostly, had a couple 2nd gens with the 4.0. The new gens with the 2.7's suck ass. Ain't got enough power to pull a greasy string out of a whores ass. With that said, I bought my 2017 SR5 tundra for 32k out the door.

I would go drive both. I’ve driven my gfs 2018 Taco Pro as well as my 18 TRD Tundra with some upgrades... My tundra is a LOT smoother. Was surprising because I thought the Pro suspension on the taco would be a lot smoother. The taco is slower and a lot smaller/less room. Slightly better mpg, slightly cheaper (taco vs tundra), and it likes to pin/wind itself out on the freeway; Tranny is a little weird like others have mentioned.

Great little truck but just depends on what’s more important to you

Do you need a truck to DD? Why not get a car with great fuel economy? Hell, you can even purchase a Lexus IS model with low miles for half of what you’re looking to spend.

I’m looking at selling my truck and both my cars and just having one vehicle that’s why I’m thinking small truck. Thanks everyone this is the kind of info I was looking for.

    Oh. Totally get that now.

Those 2nd gen Taco’s are pretty solid in the 4.0L.

Yep, find a 2nd gen with the 4.0. Very reliable and plenty of power.

If I were forced to go back to a Gen 3 Tacoma, I'd go with the 4 cylinder for sure, and I'd try to find a manual. It's cheaper and though it's slower overall and the gas mileage isn't different from the V6, it's at least a truck with an engine that knows what it wants to be. The 6 feels like a 4 until about 4600 RPM's so unless you've got the throttle close to buried, it doesn't make a huge difference.

If you need MPG, get a car. If you absolutely need a truck, F150 2.7 and an extended warranty.
