I'd say the dealer's idiot nephew was manning the phones while everyone that knew anything was out for lunch.

LOL. I'm in east Tennessee you know. There's a lot of that going around.

In your owners manual, it states any weight over 5000 lbs requires a Load Distribution Hitch. That sales staff needs help, and a reason I do my own research and get other opinions (much like doctors/lawyers).

I wouldn't even tow that 28' enclosed without a LDH, and not to be an ass, but my truck sole purpose it for towing and heavy work. Hell, I would skip the bumper pull and go GN (not really a good option for you) at 28'.

Hmmm. I'm usually the guy pointing people to the manual.

Over the summer I hauled some fill and crushed asphalt in a big dump trailer, 19 loads over all. Most loads were 8000 to 12,000 pounds. Heaviest load was 16,000 lbs. We scaled it before I left the plant. It was all short trips, about 8 or 10 miles and I took it slow. No real issues. Couple times we had too much tongue weight but we figured out the best way to distribute the load after a couple trips.

My enclosed trailer is a 24 vee-nose. I haven't measured over all but the vee adds maybe thirty inches and maybe another 16" or 18" for the tongue. When unloaded I was getting a little sway from the semi traffic and some cross winds but nothing too bad.

I should be hearing from the dealer today.

Hopefully they take care of you. Sway control is a must at freeway speeds. The right coast speed limits are a little slower if I remember correctly, so that helps.

75mph on expressways except in congested areas. Michigan passed 65mph on many primary roads a couple a year or two ago but I haven't seen any signs get changed out yet.

They just called. 399.00 plus tax. Can have it tomorrow.

I got the hitch. Purchased locally for 466.00 Had to cut chains off trailer due to interference. No time to relocate and weld new chains so I'm just wrapping chain around for now until I get back home and can work it out. I have welder here but cannot reach front of trailer with what's on hand.

Hitch doesn't fit quite right because of interference of vee-nose. L brackets are about four inches forward from where the should be. I'm also
going to have to bevel the frame at front because of interference between frame and hitch. I didn't get pic of that.

Pic shows L brackets. They should be 4 inches aft but vee interferes. Only way to go aft is weld L brackets or start sawing on trailer.

Looking at some of those trailer sway videos reminds me of pushing the clutch in on the old 140 farmall pulling a tobacco trailer down a hill and being scared to hit the brakes with the trailer swinging like a ballon in a hurricane. Hahaha

Started loading today. Sold tons of stuff. Literally TONS of stuff. Started with 15 engines and I'm down to 3. Sold lots of equipment also. Sold 3 vehicles, shipped another back to Michigan. Cherry picked some items to keep. Tried unloading the bike but no serious offers. Hopefully I can sell it or trade it in spring. Still a lot here I will end up leaving behind. I'm going to have a lot of room in trailer after loading bigger stuff so I will just keep piling it in there. I was going to sell the smoker but my dad built it so I'm saving. I shipped the two others north already. What the heck am I going to do with three smokers?

The L brackets will need a relocation like you suggested. Weld the backing plate on, then you can bolt the L-bracket on, and change out in the future when it wears. I’ve changed out 2 sets now since using a LDH. Where the brackets are now, it will still be effective.

I personally would not tow without the safety chains. Surprised you didn’t just use these:

    A2CC2A08-7E6B-4DAD-A431-005BB179031C.jpg

Mobile welders are your friend. Anyone else you know in town that might be able to help you out weld the links back on? How about a extension cord for the welder? I’ve had to do this several times.

Hell of a trip your having. Handling it well.

The chains were welded to bottom of box channel. Both were broken first time I moved the trailer with LDH on. The hitch sheered them off. I cut them off flush and added a length of chain with a couple 3/8 shackles wrapped around the center channel.

Yeah, it's been a hell of a trip. Ready to get home to family.

5002 pounds to the scrap yard today. There's more here but I gotta get back home.

Still quite a bit of room on trailer. Last night I was just loading things I'm not even sure I want but doesn't make sense to leave it behind. My Aunt and Uncle will be around to button some things up. I'm heading north today and hoping the LDH is set up properly. If not I'll be making adjustments at a rest stop or some other parking lot. All I can really change on the road is the tilt angle of the hitch.

Back home safely. Even though it's not the optimum set up I feel the load distribution hitch was a good investment. The trailer was empty on the way down and loaded on the way back so that's probably a variable, but I didn't feel I was getting pushed around so much from the turbulence off the semi trucks.

I'm going to have to bevel the box channel on front of trailer because the hitch hits in tight turns. This was a problem with many gas stations. I passed up several because I wouldn't be able to maneuver around the pumps and small lots. In many locations even if able to turn tighter I wouldn't have tried. At one station on the way down, before the LDH, I had to hop a curb and run over some bushes to get out of the parking lot. I think in the future I will map out truck stops so I know it won't be a problem.

Truck performed well with a load in trailer. Not much different than with trailer unloaded. Had some items in the bed of truck also, couple hundred pounds maybe. Tried to maintain speed of 65 to 70 in 5th gear. Steeper grades required about 3500 rpm in 4th to maintain speeds. Some occasions through the mountains in Northern Tennessee and Southern Kentucky where the grades are longer and steeper speeds would drop into the fifties. I could have pushed the truck harder but I figured I'm moving and not killing my truck. Fuel consumption around 7.5mpg.

Now,... What am I going to do with all this shit?
