Right. With the way people are nowadays there’s going to be some type of outrage. Some activist will tear it down or throw paint on it.

Probably good eating...I don't know though, never really got an old mature one like that. Usually mine are younger and taste amazing.

 

Do you think it gets tough when the meat is older?

 

I heard they can...but taste is all depending on diet. Oldest I got was probably around 5, little tougher on hind quarters but backstrap and loins still nice and tender.

 

Going for a big buck is more for quantity of meat and maybe some trophy points? It would make more sense to go for a younger buck.

 

Correct, depends how your hunting. If trophy you would like old mature buck. If hunting for meat a young one. My state has rules and point restrictions that allow young bucks to get at least 2-3 years of age before they are legal to harvest.

 

Sorry I’ve never hunted more than for fish. But I’ve eaten lots of venison and really enjoy it.

 

I love it! I'd rather deer hunt than fish. Even on unsuccessful trips, the experience has always been fun. Plus filling the freezer with good tasty meat is worth it too.

 

That’s one hell of a buck, especially given how he tracked him for four years. I had a shot at a 14 pointer this year, and didn’t take it since I’d just shot at a littler buck and thought I had him down. Been kicking myself ever since.

 

You did the right thing if you only have one buck tag. That sucks...been there. I had mine last year on the ground when the biggest deer I've seen on hoof showed up. Cool to look at but man would have been a monster trophy.

 

Yeah I know, even getting an OTC or leftover doe tag in that GMU is next to impossible so getting a buck tag outside of draw there is almost as likely as seeing a unicorn. Gotta love how well those big bucks stay invisible eh?

 

It's like they learn and develope totally different patterns than does and younger bucks.

 

This goes for all of us, I sure as hell don’t take the same paths as I did when I was in my twenty’s.

 

If hunting for meat why not just shoot a doe

gotcha. Just drives me crazy here you can shoot bucks or does on a general tag. People claim to shoot their little buck for the meat.

Hence the reason there is a point restrictions now

 

It was always my understanding that you shoot the bucks because one can impregnate multiple doe’s.

 

I get that. I suppose without delving too far into my philosophy is if I don't have something by seasons end and I see a doe that doesn't have a baby with it and I need food I'd rather shoot that then a small buck, to let it get a chance to grow up and maybe become a trophy. There's far more does here then bucks too.

I suppose it probably depends on the state. Here were out numbered by antelope 2-1. Deer populations are way down because of the tough winter's recently.
