I suppose that's true for a stock truck. But if your putting new oversized tires on the truck, might as well get a good spare

I have 37's on my truck, so a new spare was a necessity. I just didn't have it in me to buy a 5th Fuel Forged 22x10, so I grabbed a $100 22x10 wheel off of ebay and put a matching 37x13.50r22 on it. So I do keep a fullsize spare in the bed, just a non-matching wheel.

I am wanting to get a full size spare for my truck, but don't want to spend the coin on a matching rim. It would be nice to be able to find a cheap steel wheel that has the same offset as my current wheels, but I haven't found one yet (granted I haven't looked super hard yet, neither).

That's what I did. I have 285/75/17 tires (33.8" ). I got a 285/70/18 (33.7" ) sized tire to go on the spare steel rim. Despite the wheel diameter difference, they're roughly the same overall diameter. I didn't feel comfortable having the much smaller factory sized spare, especially when I go on long trips.

in hindsight, I'm wondering if it would've been worth it, especially in the long run, to just get the same 17" wheel and tire combo. 285/70/18 is a rare size, making it a bit more expensive than 285/75/17. I'm thinking it may have made more sense to have bitten the bullet and ponied up for the same 17" tire/rim combo.

So will a 285/65/20 fit underneath?

Anybody just run the stock wheel with a spacer to get the offset? I'm not a huge fan of spacers, and I don't imagine you can just buy "1" of them, but was something I was thinking about.

I think you might be able to squeeze it in there if you can remove the two front curved brackets. FWIW, my 285/70/18 BFG Mud barely fits with the brackets on. I may remove them eventually to get a better fit.

Does anyone know the offset of the stock 18” steel spare rim?

I run a set of Nittos RG 295/70R18 and want to buy a spare tire as close as possible. I am thinking about getting a cheaper 295 (atturo maybe?) and mount it on the stock spare rim. Obviously I don’t intend to do 5-tire rotations but want a matching tire size. I know that with stock UCAs I would likely rub on the inner side, but I’ve got Total Chaos UCAs, and they do seem more forgiving in this matter. I just need the stock rim offset to get a decent guess...

+60mm is the stock offset, I believe.

I bought a spare 275/70/18 so it was the same size as what I upgraded to. I bought a cheaper 100 dollar AT tire though.

I haven’t boughten a 5th yet (I’m on 35s) because my current tires were given to me. Once I buy new wheels I’ll get 5 as I’m going 37s and want a proper spare. Plus I’ll need to mount it in the box or on a rack of some type so it will be exposed. I’ll rotate the 5th wheel through that way if I want to change tires once worn out I can get a matching spare again. Neat thread idea.

I just bit the bullet and bought a matching tire and wheel for my 2019.

Expensive but will he worth it in the end if I ever get a flat. At least now I can add it into the rotation for less wear and tear.

i suspect more would be running the stock spare tire than anything... even the ones with +sized tires

I've wondered about this. My truck was recently side swiped and had some pretty extensive damage to the bed, rear axle, and the rear passenger rim/tire were replaced with new by insurance company. The collision shop returned the old tire/rim and it basically looks like the only significant damage is the center cap was destroyed and there is a small "cut" on the side of the tire, but it doesn't appear to be damaged beyond use at all. I'm tempted to keep in in the bed as my spare. Probably a good idea to have it looked at by a shop to make sure it's not dangerous to use for any reason, but otherwise it looks good to me.Tundra spare.jpg

I run a matching method/ridge grappler so I can rotate all 5. Not sure if it actually helps in the long run but theoretically should extend the tire set life 20% so I dunno. I like putting the spare on and carrying on without having to rush to a tire shop if I have an issue.

Those are the same wheel I have. I'd be interested to know if it fits under the bed. Is that a 35 12.50 20 on a 10" rim

I'm not sure I'd want to store it under the bed. Seems like it could incur a lot of damage from rocks, dirt, etc. Also, seems like a big PITA to hoist up, drop down and so on. I'm not real knowledgeable about this stuff but my tires are Nitto Ridge Grappler LT295/60R20 which I'm pretty sure are 34". The Rims are 20x9 with +20mm offset.

I'd try and mount it under the bed but I might just store in the bed under my shell for road trips and such. If I have a flat in town I can always Uber to the house and get it in one of my other vehicles.

Matched 20" rim and 34" tire bought at the same time as the other 4, run a 5 wheel rotation every 5000 miles, ignore the TPMS. Always have a usable spare that's in the same condition as the rest. After multiple fail moments with 4 wheel rotations: Got tired of pulling out my barely used spare on my LC and finding out a $300 34" tire was dry rotted from baking in the sun on my roof. Limped back to town on an undersized factory spare (stock- 31.5ish) on my old Tacoma with 35s from DEEP in the back country. That sucked, especially because it was muddy and the slick factory street tire would pull the truck in weird directions compared to the KOs... :mudding:

Swing out or fixed rear tire carrier. Never have to try and get it out from under the truck when its flat in a bad spot in the back country. You can get a cheap fixed rear tire hitch carrier for under $200. I love my Wilco. One day I will convince the wife of the need for a high clearance bumper with a built in swing out.

I'm rocking a full size spare on a method wheel that matches the others. 35" fits in the spare tire slot(most aftermarket wheels are mounted facing up so debris mainly contacts the back of the rim/tire) and I
l do the 5-tire rotation. Concerned about rocking a donut compared to the 35's. Differentials don't like that much a of a size difference, god-forbid I can't patch the flat and limp it out.

Glad to see this thread revived. I've been debating what to do. Recently got BDS lifted and aside from the rusty, old, small spare being hard on the differential, the stock offset wont even fit in the front anymore so need to change out the rim. I was leaning towards a steely with a similar sized tire also.. running Icon Alloys +25 and 315/70 r17 which is pretty much 35x12.50. Definitely have concerns about it fitting underneath sounds like people are fitting it in the 2.5s just doesn't seem like there is that much space on my 2nd gen. Would love to see proof it will fit on my 2007. Also considered putting it up top on my roof rack but haven't seen very many setups that look good and it would need to lock.

Do y’all swap the tires around yourself at a regular interval? Or have a shop do it with balance and alignment? I’m thinking a tire/wheel balanced for one corner may need balancing if you swapped to another? Totally a wheel/tire noob here but I’m planning to get on this train. I love me some good preventative maintenance and life cycle extension.

I used to swap wheels/tires on my Miata several times a month. I did not keep track of which race tire went where, but I was careful with the street tires and would rotate them based on wear since I was looking at them all the time. I never had a problem where a tire was balanced on one corner of the car and not the other. A balanced tire will remain balanced on any corner, as long as none of the weights get knocked off during the transfer.
