I have a Diamondback SE on my 2016 Limited and its leaking where the middle section and the back panel meet. Was told by Diamondback its most likely because there is a hollow under the rail caps the gets compressed when the clamps are tightened down. I tried not to overtighten the clamps so it doesn't distort the outside of the cap. Was also told there are some aftermarket caps that are more rigid than the OEM and that would help too. Anybody run into this problem? TIA

I just ordered a Diamondback SE. Have you found a solution yet besides having to buy aftermarket bed caps?

No. I called Diamondback and they told me that its not the first time someone has had this issue. Told me its because of the flimsy bed caps from Toyota. I looked but cant seem to find any aftermarket rail caps. So the other option is to remove the cap and shim it somehow so it doesn't collapse when the center section is clamped down. I tried backing off on the clamps, they weren't that tight to begin with. but I'm afraid it will loosen up. Let me also say that Diamondback has been great. There sending me another piece of gasket to try and help. They actually offered to refund my money if I wasn't happy but honestly I like the cover to much to send it back. If anyone knows a company that does make aftermarket caps please let me know.

I do have the HD version. I get very minimal water, it sounds like same area you are getting. It hasn't bothered me though because I have a bedslide and the water being only toward the outside of the bed doesn't get onto my slide or bed bins. I can see how if I didn't have my setup I'd want to resolve it. Wish I could be more help. I did get a gasket from diamondback when I purchased my cover. I just never installed it because I haven't had the need. Wish I could help more, good luck. As u can see in pic below, and as u mentioned the water getting in between the rails and cover, with this setup, the water just falls to bottom side of bed and eventually dries the day after rain. As I mentioned it's very minimal, you can only see that it's wet, theres no visible puddles. So for me and my setup it don't bother or inconvenience since the bedslide and bins is elevated off bed floor. There is also a small gap between bedsides and bins. Just enough to allow any seeping water fall to the bed floor without getting in my bins or on my slide.

Thanks for the reply. Interesting idea using shims. I’ve never messed with bed caps before. None of my other trucks had them. So I guess it’s not as easy as lifting the bed cap area up a bit and stuffing in some rubber pieces underneath as shims?

I don't think the caps will be that difficult to remove. I believe you can squeeze the clips from underneath and pop it off.

Thanks dugfur. I read the same thing somewhere else. Do you know or did the Diamondback folks say what kind of shims to use in the center area?

No. They didn't recommend anything. When I have a chance and the weather cooperates I will take a look at it. Some kind of rubber possibly so it won't damage the paint

iirc this area of the cap will begin to buckle away from the bed from over-tightened clamps and create a gap. I loosened mine in the summer but snug enough to hold it, and I check it periodically. I don’t recall a torque spec in the instructions, not sure.

Thanks, JoshuaA. I’ve read the same about over-tightening the center clamps. Have you had any leaks?

I’m thinking the same. Of course, I don’t even have mine yet - just ordered it. So I may be over-thinking and fretting about nothing. My main reason for getting it is to keep stuff secure and dry. Just trying to plan ahead and minimize any chance of leaking once I install it.

Mine had a minor leak at the tailgate on the left side after install, I readjusted the rods and all good. You just need to get someone standing on each corner while you do the one-time adjustment inside. However doing so, it’ll require more downward pressure to close it and turn the lock mechanism in day-to-day use. There is a strap you can pull on with the tailgate open to accomplish that.

No leaks in the center, closeup I can tell the cap is no longer true in the red circled area, that’s why I loosened the clamps or it’ll start separating. Sounds worse than it is. It’s held down by 4 clamps and 4 rods so I’m not worried. The cover is badass and because there’s a bit of rust in the hinges, they are sending me improved ones free. Great company and I don’t regret having one at all.

Excellent install tips and info. I don’t mind using extra downward pressure to close or open. Just want to make sure my stuff stays as dry and secure as can be considering the limitations of the diamondback system. Also glad to hear of their good customer service with the hinge hardware.

I have an HD. No water that I notice. It took awhile to get the right adjustments but I think I have it on properly now. No buckling. I’ve had mine since May.

I have been thinking about ordering one, would weather stripping for a garage door applied to the mounting surface of the bed rail help?

I glued a thin neoprene gasket to bulkhead by the rear window. Seems to form a nice seal. A larger gasket is probably too thick and won’t form a good seal with the seal of the top panels.

It already comes with pretty good weather stripping, that wouldn’t be where it leaks in the center. The new one has redesigned clamps that don’t pinch as much. Here’s a better pic of the problem from over tightening on an older version, you can see the factory cap lifting off the bed.

Mine looked like this too. Need to really back off on the clamps. Almost to the point where they are barely tight.

What I did with my rail caps is remove them and silicone them back down. You guys could do this as well as shim the areas where it will be clamped. Just a suggestion. Sometimes you have to get creative.

Interesting idea. Just so I understand, you applied some kind of silicone sealant to the bed rails then put the bed caps back? Or did you apply some kind of silicone gasket material on the bed rails?

I went with what I had in the garage. Clear silicone. Cleaned the surfaces with rubbing alcohol and applied to the underside of the bed cap. Then snapped it back into place, There is probably a better product for this, but I figured I could remove this without issue in the future. It will pull off if I want it to. Haha I’ve tried.

I didn’t like how the rails move slightly in their slots. It causes a small amount of chafe and was noticeable at the front and back of the bedrails.

I have been think of getting a Diamondback actually that is what I want. I called Diamondback today and asked about them leaking and they said the issue is with over tighten the center and they also said a bead silicone really helps just wanted to pass this on. - Scott

Thanks. It feels less cheap, more solid. And helps with leaking. I recommend.

Where did they say to put the bead? Under the plastic rail cap? I haven’t had any leaking though.

this is what he said The factory bed rail caps can themselves leak. If absolute protection from moisture is essential for you, apply a bead of silicone to the cabward end of each bed rail cap where it meets the sheet metal after you install the bulkhead weatherstrip.

I think DB may sell extenders for two of the wheels. Not sure though
