Pretty good info about headers. What do y'all think? I added some headers to my 2000 but I have no plans to add them to my 05.

    None, yet....
That's a whole lot of words for an already solved problem. To counter his argument though, long tubes on LS motors, and even our motors, have been known to make 30-50hp and 20-40lb ft of torque. With HPTuners, EFI Live, and other laptop based software to tune an engine, tuning ECMs is now the "carburetor tuning" of his time. Couple long tubes with a decent air intake and some injectors, you can pull 25-35% more power out an engine and probably even better fuel economy.

Times are a changing boys and girls...

As it pertains to just the Tundra community...do you think anyone with either ST or LT headers reprograms their ECM? I'd say most don't. With that being said without an ECM reprogram will you truly see any gains? Again I'd say no, in fact, you'll probably see a degradation of hp.

I'm not adding headers either way I'm just wondering just to be "wondering"...you know?!

Yeah I just stumbled into his videos about 3 or 4 months ago. I found them to be informative and simple, for a non-mechanical person such as myself.

As for his money from his views...I say Kudos to him!!! I wish I knew something that 1M people would watch to make some extra cash cause I sure need it!!!!!

Respectfully disagree with them being useless on modern vehicles.

Headers are the best way to gain a good number of hp/torque that tuners won’t give you, cheaper than buying a supercharger. His videos are ok, old guy technician I don’t know how current his knowledge is but he has a lot of viewers so must be legit ‍

    @dirtydeeds

This guy^^ has done more Dyno runs than most, testing out various exhaust systems all while making more HP/TQ and keeping the proper air/fuel ratio.

Ol’ Scotty....not so much. He has some funny videos, and I’m sure is a skilled mechanic. The video points out all 4 cylinder commuter cars, which I agree with. That’s a stupid idea putting a header on a Honda VTec to gain 2 hp.

Please tell me how you can gain 25-35% power with a modern normally aspirated engine?
A modern engine runs at 85-90% volumetric efficiency, a full bore race engine can squeeze 105% in a very narrow RPM range with ram air effect intake and exhaust tuning. How do you make a street engine get 110-120% volumetric efficiency (per your 25-35% comment) over the broad RPM that a street engine needs to operate?
That is like running a turbo or supercharger on the engine at 3-4 psi ?

    Perfect.

I’m in the mindset to just buy a fast/powerful “whatever” instead of building something that was never meant for high performance.

@ColoradoTJ not sure what you are trying to say with the link?

**Highly Modified = aggressive cam, performance intake manifold, headers, ignition upgrade, aftermarket configuration racing cylinder heads, 14:1 or higher compression ratio

That is a race engine, no way can those specs idle under 1500rpm, nor does it show that "headers, cai, and ecu tuning " can give you 25-35% more power.

At 3:15 he says people will put on a turbo before doing a header.... I don’t believe anything else he says now.

Since I wouldn’t call any streetable car a highly modified motor, let’s take this down to the slightly modified motor, which is pertains to this conversation and what one can do with a Tundra.

Now in the dyno sheet I posted, the red was tune, intake, exhaust, stock injectors in an LS1 motor. Stock crank HP was 335 hp. So how did I get 337 hp to the rear wheels withh just these simple mods with ~15% drivetrain loss, and then let’s bring in the elevation loss at 6k’ would be 18%. So I’m losing 110.5 hp due to losses.

The blue line was full retard mode after motor was pulled, total top end replacement (new heads, FAST 102 intake manifold/TB, large cam, 60 lb injectors) AR 1.75 longtube headers, Corsa exhaust, new HPTuners dyno tune. With the 150 hp shot, I was knocking on the back door of 600 hp to the ground...with NOS.

I was impressed with the lap times. Sucks the Supra now has a BMW motor in it.
