Headed south from Northern Michigan to Tennessee. Trailer is unloaded except for some tools and supplies in the bow. 3460 pounds dry, and about 200 pounds of gear. 24 foot vee nose, roughly 28 feet over all. I can see I need to air up the rear air bags already. Will be fully loaded on return trip. Going down to clean out my dads estate and shop. Roughly 2,000 miles round trip. Sorry about the Land Rover photo bomb; no time to orchestrate a photo shoot. Anybody here in East Tennessee area? Blount County? Estate sale begins this week if all goes as planned.KIMG2305.jpg

First leg of trip, 4.5 hours to get a little south and spent night with relatives. Fuel consumption basically double running 65 to 70 mph in fifth gear. Transmission downshifts too much in sixth. Can't really run with cruise control either because even on the slightest grade it bumps into fourth and and uses too much throttle to maintain speed. Without cruise on I can maintain speeds without constant downshifting. Now I'm wondering if a tuner would help with towing. Kentucky and Tennessee will be interesting with the mountains.

The axles sure are a ways back on that trailer! Says the ass-end of your truck :D
Hope all goes well - drive safe!

(PS - I’d gear select 4th or 5th and use cruise)

I did tow a lot, well when I did own a Tundra. Never had a problem with my right foot. Longest I towed was 9 hours though, and it was in fact, a very long day. Good thing is every couple hours I had to stop for fuel and was able to stretch.

Be glad you don’t do this all the time, but if you did, the Tundra might not be your truck of choice either.

Be interested in hearing about the return trip. That’s a lot of trailer, without a WDH.

I've got airbags. They had no pressure in them at time of photo. Pumped up to 20psi before I left. The combination of airbags in rear and 1.5 inch bilstein 5200s up front really makes it tow pretty good. When towing I'd get a lot of rebound up front from dips in roads but adding the 5200s stiffened it up. Most of my towing has been relatively short trips. I added the airbags this summer.

Made it to my destination. Pretty much single digit mileage for the entire trip. I can usually make it with three tanks of fuel with a light load in the truck. This trip towing trailer was six tanks. I didn't figure it out exactly but I'm roughly around 7mpg.

I was dreading hitting the hills of Kentucky, and Jellico Mountains but it really wasn't too bad. I'm surprised it was really not much different than driving in the heavy crosswinds through Michigan and Ohio. Once you hit the hills they buffer you from the winds. Basically 2500rpm in fifth gear to maintain speed of 70mph in the winds or up the long steep grades.

At the last fuel stop in Michigan, south of Dundee, I glanced at my rear tires and decided to air them up a little more. Took them from 40psi up to 48psi. As I was doing this the truck was running. I noticed the condensation coming from exhaust was completely black with carbon. Probably add some seafoam on the return trip and see if it will blow out some more.

So far I guess I'm pleased with how it performed with the trailer empty. It will be loaded on trip home. The first five or six hours of the trip north is all hills. I plan to load the bed of truck also so I have some more weight distributed further forward on the chassis.

Take it from someone who has almost jackknifed a trailer and flipped truck because of cruise control. The risk is not worth the comfort or convenience.
(I've also pulled a very heavy, 22' car hauler 3,300 miles from Seattle to Boston without cruise control so I can sympathize with you.)

Cruise control almost got me in trouble pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with firewood for a friend. A hill caused the truck to downshift just as I reached the top. Then CC cut power to coast on the downhill side, but not quickly enough. I had more speed than I thought was safe so I applied the brakes and trailer started swaying. Despite having more speed than I wanted I tried to accelerate out of the sway, but it got worse immediately.

The rear of the truck started sliding alternately left and right so I took my foot off of the pedals and focused on keeping the front tires pointed down the road and in front of the trailer. I had to try and ride it out until I reached the bottom of that hill and the start of the next one, but it was still getting worse and I wasn't going to make it that long.

At that point I started losing firewood off of the trailer and once it was lighter the truck could control the sway and everything calmed down. But not before I had scattered firewood down the highway for about half a mile.

    Other factors contributed:
    1. The trailer was improperly loaded with most of the weight on the front and rear instead of concentrating it over the axles with the proper amount of tongue weight (I didn't load it, but it was my fault for not noticing)
    2. The trailer had no brakes.
    3. No weight distribution hitch or sway control.
    4. The trailer weight was likely too heavy for that Tacoma, but I was only pulling it 5 miles.
    5. There were rolling hills.

None of that was ideal or smart on my part, but we all know that cruise control has no sense of when you're approaching a hill or how long it is.

If I had been manually controlling the throttle I would have started the hill with a little extra speed and let off before the top to coast over to the downhill side at a comfortable speed and make it all smooth.

Despite the other factors, I doubt I would have had any problems if I hadn't been using the cruise control. Now I avoid all of the contributing factors that listed above if possible and I never use cruise control while towing.

Just tryin' to keep it between the lines, shiney-side up.

Couple weeks doing an estate sale. Tons of stuff. House and shop full. 136 disco loop road in Friendsville. You'll see my truck and trailer across the street. Stuff is moving already. Stop by this weekend. Sold two parts trucks and an old panel van yesterday. Sold car dolly. Few boat trailers I need to get rid of. A suburban, custom motorcycle, The best items are going quick. So far it's been word of mouth and I posted on the Maryville Blount Yard Sale page on Facebook. Starting to get some activity from the Facebook posting.

I was settling down after a long day last night watching some videos on the phone. The driver fails compilations. Saw several trucks getting pushed around by the trailers they were towing. Got me thinking and just added some anxiety. I do have a break controller so I'll bump up the output voltage and take it slow.

I was thinking about adding one while I'm here. Also I am due for tires so I might do that and go up on the load range.

This one was impressive. I have had my GMC trailer sway activate, not this extreme, but I would have been pulling leather out of my ass for a week. Without the LDH and trailer sway control that GM offers, he would have been in the median on his side.

Having a good LDH towing a huge wind sail is a life saver. I never tow without it.

Doing my research tonight. Found a couple big trailer places locally. Will start with those on Monday to see if they stock anything. Can order straight from Reese with free three day shipping.

I double checked dry trailer weights, it's 3460. Probably add 250 pounds for things I added,... tool box and tool bag, jack, spare tire, group 27 battery and winch, plus (8) five foot long e tracks.

Looking at this one. I don't think I'll be anywhere near 10,000 pounds gross trailer weight on this trip but a heavier system gives me peace, plus it's right there with the max towing weight of 10,300. SR5 TRD with towing package.

That’s a very common hitch. Most RV places have it.

Here is a good calculator to estimate which load rated hitch you should purchase.

    https://www.equalizerhitch.com/find-your-hitch-size

I put in 9000 lbs trailer weight, 875 tongue weight and 200 lbs in the bed. They calculated 1000/10000 rated hitch.

Cool. Thanks. I've got some shop equipment and tools to haul so that stuff adds up fast. It's going to take some head scratching to distribute the weight in the trailer. So far it looks like the heaviest items are large industrial band saw, large tool chest, and a custom towable stainless smoker. My cousin is coming to take back a car hauler with another larger smoker. I might be able to get them both on that trailer and lighten my load. My dad was into many things. He built a lot of smokers over the years, all custom and unique. There's three here but I can't take them all. I sold one of them. I wish I could take everything back but it's just not possible.

That’s the hard part Rob, loading an enclosed trailer correctly to minimize sway and have maximum control. Trust me when I say this, once loaded, hitched up, go test out your load while the help is still there.

One of my good friends retired from being all he could be (due to an airplane crash) and decided to move out of Colorado. We loaded up his 34’ enclosed to the max, figured we had enough tongue weight since his F250 (2014) with 100 psi in the airbags, my 12000 lbs LDH installed, and the ass end was still sagging a little. Nope. He had to drive all the way to the eastern part of Kansas at 55 mph max. Trailer sway was horrible. This wasn’t due to improper tongue weight, the trailer was just really heavy. Those dual 8k lbs rated axles with G Rated tires was working.
Once he arrived in KS, unloaded some things, he was able to go freeway speeds down to OK.

    Now that's a load!

Put the heaviest stuff over the axles and then the next heaviest in front and behind that then repeat until it's full.

There's almost no way to end up with insufficient tongue weight that way. There's more trailer space in front of the axle than behind it. You'll end up with the heaviest stuff balanced close to the axles and the lightest stuff in the front.

If you don't have enough tongue weight switch something heavy in the back with something light from the front.

I forgot something critical though. Make sure your hitch isn't too high. If you have to panic stop with a heavy load, no trailer brakes and the tongue above parallel it can lift the rear truck tires off the ground. Happened to my dad with a 3/4 truck pulling a boat.

Trailer brakes work good. Trailer is new.

Called one of the local trailer places. Found three dealers within about 15 miles. One place says they'd be happy to sell me the hitch but I probably don't need it unless I'm towing a 28'. I guess that's an honest answer.

I asked him to get pricing. They've got a distributor in Nashville so I could get it in a day without freight It was after 5pm so he's checking tomorrow.

Great news though. My cousin shot down yesterday. He spent a day and we loaded an open car hauler and the bed of his truck. Now I have plenty of space. It's heavier stuff going in there but I think I'll be in pretty good shape.

Those smoke stacks made out of headers are pretty awesome.

Once they're over 16' or so I've never thought of the length of the trailer being as important as the weight when deciding whether I would benefit from a weight distribution hitch.

Did I misunderstand what the dealer told you?

He said he didn't think I needed one unless I was towing a 28 or longer. My thinking was the same as you suggest. Weight versus length.

I own several trailers and never felt the need before. For me it's a lot to do with the length of the trip and driving comfort at a reasonable speed.

If the load is equal to or heavier than the truck then there's a good possibility of getting pushed around. I've been pushed around by trailers before. Managed to correct them but it's a pucker up moment I'd assume avoid. Snow is flying back home so that's another concern.
