Dude...! Thank you for remembering to take pictures of the process. Question...

1 .Was this the color match spray bomb from automotivetouchup.com?

    2. How happy are you with the color match?

    3. Would you do it the same or anything different?

Sorry for the personal questions, just looking to make a solid decision with a new truck LOL. :fingerscrossed:

DUDE turned out great! Where did you end up ordering from? You should do a write up on how you went about it all. Looks real good! Makes me want to do that this weekend! My patience with paint drying is not a strong suit!

    @Napvid

1 .Was this the color match spray bomb from automotivetouchup.com?
Yes! 2 cans of color match is all I needed (I would buy 3-4 next time though just to have extra.) I also went ahead and bought the color match touch up pen, adhesion promoter and gray sandable primer. For the metal chrome bumper caps I already had a can of gray self etching primer from a previous experiment so I had that at my disposal as well.

    2. How happy are you with the color match?
I’m actually really happy with it. The clear coat didn’t come out as glossy as I’d hoped, so I may wait a week, clean the grill surround and bulge and re-clear coat it to see what happens. But all in all I’m very satisfied and thank god for no more chrome!
    3. Would you do it the same or anything different?
This was my first time ever taking on a paint project like this and I was honestly nervous. But I thought to myself the worst case scenario would be that I didn’t like the outcome and could just sand it all back down and re paint, or just fork up the money for new parts. The previous extent of my painting experience was just black bumpers on my old jeep years ago lol.
Sorry for the personal questions, just looking to make a solid decision with a new truck LOL. No apologies necessary my friend. If you’re on the fence about it you could still find a shop that will volunteer to do the paint work though because of chrome they won’t guarantee it. But worst case you’d be out a few hundred bucks, still way cheaper than buying all new painted parts.

I ended up going with automotivetouchup. com. Very happy with it. The brighter the sun light the better it looks too and the more I look at it you really can’t tell a difference at all. I only say that because there’s like 4 different materials on the front end of our trucks lol (kinda ridiculous). You have the factory painted cement body panels, the chrome plastic crap around our grill, metal chrome bumper caps, and black plastic I’m guessing for the center bumper piece. So sanding, drying, and surface texture for all these parts wasn’t going to be 100% the same. The color is spot on, but you can still run your hand over the grill surround and of course tell it’s plastic....but who cares lol! Again, this is my first time doing this and I have no paint or body work experience, so I’m very happy with the outcome esp for the price!

    Not many yet, mostly stock.

Call an automotive paint store and ask them if they can mix up the color for you. In Cali they can put that color you ask for in a spray paint can if you like. Drivers side door pillar has a tag with the color code on it..( just a heads up to ya) Hope that might help.:stirthepot:

Thanks for the info man! You have sealed the deal for me. I will be ordering the paint today. I am by no means an auto body guy but I have some experience so I am confident I can Git Er Done. Not trying to be a PITA but if it is not to much trouble, do you think you could post up some pics in the daylight please?:hattip:Maybe a couple of close-ups? Also did you have to do your handles? And oh yeah Great Job, looks awsome!

I use automotive touchup as well and have always had really great results. Only advice I will add to the rest of this thread is to buy the SprayMax 2K clear coat from auto touchup rather than their own gloss clear coat. The SprayMax 2k gloss clear coat is as close to body shop clear you can get - it's 2 part activated by pressing a button on the bottom of the can to release the catalyst. It's high quality stuff, much better than the regular clear they offer. Clear coat, especially on the front of the truck, handles, any high wear area etc, really matters.

OP - looks like it turned out great!

Yea I called Sherwin but they weren’t helpful on the phone lol. I knew what the paint code was way before diving into anything. Automotive did the job for now at least! Next time if I need paint I may go see if a local store could be of help.

+1 on the 2k gloss! I actually purchased it an used it but it still wasn’t quite as glossy as factory. My conclusion was partly due to the fact that it was on plastic as opposed to a body panel, but I could be wrong. You’re supposed to dispose of the spray can even if you don’t use it all after 48hrs I think, so I may wind up ordering another just to have (I used up all of mine anyway). Also you HAVE to use a respirator with this stuff!!!

Hey Bigzrs01, getting ready to place my order. Does this look correct to you? Do you think this will this be enough to do front bumper ends, grill saround, bulge, mirror caps and door handles? Also, they're calling it cement gray metallic. But the color code is correct just wasn't sure of the metallic

Yea that looks pretty good. It took me 2 cans to do the front bumper caps and surround/bulge. So I’d imagine a 3rd can should be plenty to do door handles and mirror caps...may not hurt to get a 4th can just to have handy. I went ahead and got their prep solvent too, but if you have some at home then you’re good. Don’t forget a respirator mask...the regular nose/mouth cover masks probably won’t cut it!

Yep, exactly! I have a can that I didn't throw away and it solidifies haha. And yes, definitely use a respirator - it's some real stuff lol.

Again, great job - it turned out really nice and looks fantastic!

    So here’s what I did,

    Bumper Caps:
-was lazy and didn’t take the caps off, so I just taped around the necessary parts and then used paint drip sheets to protect over spray
-cleaned (used a degreaser and prep solvent)
    -sanded with 80 grit
    -cleaned again
-since I had it, I sprayed a light coat of adhesion promoter
-since I also had this from a previous project, I did 2 light coats of self etching gray primer (good for metal surfaces)
-another 2 coats of the sandable gray primer
    -dry sanded with 600 grit
    -cleaned
-did about 2 coats of 1H5 cement paint
-wet sanded with 1000 grit just to even and smooth out then wiped down
    -another 3 coats of 1H5
-2 light clear coats then 1 “wet” coat
    -all done!

For the grill surround it was essentially the same process minus the etching primer. And I started with 160 grit sand paper instead of 80. The rest of the process was relatively similar!

Very cool man! I just ordered the paint. Thanks for the advice. Now I just have to wait patiently until the UPS man arrives:turtleride: Plus they said it will take about 3 days to make the order. So hopefully it will be here by next Friday.

No problem! There may be some more experienced body work guys in here that will hopefully chime in and give some tips. My method may have seemed a bit overkill, but it really didn’t take all that long. Less than half a day at most and I just let everything dry overnight

This turned out great! Price point of the materials is a major attraction, even with the DIY labor factored in it still seems like one of the best options I've seen. Thanks for sharing and documenting! One question, when you did the paint applications, did you take any precautions for wind/dust etc.?

How's the paint job holding up a few months down the road with a winter behind it?? Any difference in wear between the previously chrome end caps and the surround/bulge?

Sorry for the extremely late reply. I got lucky and had zero wind on this day. When I took the surround and bulge off I put it in my garage and basically turned my garage into a paint booth lol. I probably could have pulled the front end of the truck in there as well.

The paint job is honestly holding up better than I thought. The chrome caps have zeros chips or signs of chrome showing through. I think I noticed maybe 1 spec of chrome showing through on the surround but no where near enough for me to freak out. I also ordered the 1h5 touch up paint pen too for this exact reason.

    Hope this helps!

Man, been a while since I had the time to even get back on this site. Of the paint you got how many cans did you go through for the project? Is it necessary to buy 2 (or more) of anything? The only thing I was going to get 2 of, was the actual paint. You think that’s safe? Or a bad play call? With the promoter and primer don’t think I will need 2 cans.

I think I got two cans of the color matched paint and it was plenty enough. I also got their paint pen as well just to have on hand. What all were you planning on painting again?
