    That is the question,

I can get a package price on both.

Large with stand plate setter tools etc for $1200

X-Large with same set up $1400

XL, no one has ever said "I wish I bought the smaller grill". Seriously, I bought my BGE 2 years ago and went back and forth on this as well and ended up with the XL. I don't regret it one bit and there has been a couple times where I wished I had the XXL.

I chose the Primo XL over the Big Green Egg. I like the dual heat zone setup and the oval shape for better cooking versatility. Just my preference.

Large egg is huge, friend has one. Unless you roll around with 25 or more of your friends/family the large is good. Use the extra 200.00 at the butcher for some good cuts of steak.

Large egg might be big enough for most family use, but every now-and-then you get a bunch of friends over and wished you had a little more space. $200 sounds like a lot extra, but it is only 15%± more, so really not that big a difference. If it was 50% more or double the price I would say Large is good enough.
Another way to look at the $200; if the egg lasts you 10 years, it is only $20 per year.

I have the Large and wish I had the XL. Not so much for cooking for a single meal but I batch cook stuff for lunch for the week (chicken leg quarters for example) and could use the space. Big briskets are a tight fit too. Love it though, so good.

My dad has been using the GE for more than 30 yrs. There've been times when it wasn't quite big enough for a Turkey. I think he has a large, certainly not XL.

Not to go off topic, but look at the Vision grill as an alternative to Green Egg. Essentially the same thing, but for lower price you get a lot more. The Green Egg you have to pay extra for the side shelves, stand, pizza stone etc. while the vision comes with all that included at about the base price of the green egg without the options.

pit barrel for the win. My buddy blew way over a grand on his egg. It's cool and all but a pit barrel will do the same damn thing. Once you are dialed in then build a custom pit... That's where the real beer drinking happens!!!IMG_0604.jpg

Yes, but the Vision that includes everything in that package is $699.
Not trying to sway you, just saying that I like the Vision. Same quality, but I think you pay a couple hundred $$ just for the Green Egg name.

I can a visions from another HD, but that model has mixed reviews, S series with the duel pro zone knobs. $699 plus tax and still have to buy a plate setter or "lava" stone and rack.

There are a ton of options, the egg is local, will be set up and delivered.

So i used to sell BGE's. Sold over a couple hundred of them in a 5ish year period at the pool store i worked for. I'm a glorified Egg-Head - fucking love those ceramic beasts. I own a XL (got it for my dad) and feel as if I'm pretty in tune with them as we use it for everything and i've cooked countless times now on it.

Unless you're a serious smoker, as in smoking large quantities of meat, not skill level, I'd recommend the Large. It's their flagship size and i feel that this is for good reason. There will be more aftermarket accessories that'll fit it and you won't blow through coals as well. You can still stuff a ton of meat in a Large as well.

The only reason I got the XL is because we always had Weber charcoal grills and we didn't want to lose grill space. When I get another one, for myself, I'll be getting a large. I can do some serious damage on that thing.

PS we sold them for much lower than that (weren't in for the money on those though). they're probably buying the large for around 600 and the XL for 8ish...less if they're buying a bunch at once. we were getting them for 5 and 7 back in the day...

oh and those fakers (Vison, Primo, komaodo joe or w/e) are shit in comparison; won't hold heat as well and don't come with a LIFETIME warranty. BGE honors that warranty for some pretty bizarre shit too, so long as it's not physically dropped they'll swap you parts right there if the store has it in stock.

You'll do just fine with a Large then. There were some people that would come in at times and they'd tell me that they will very rarely be cooking for others, in which case i told them to go medium and they all loved it. But I'd still go Large. You can put a decent sized bird in there and still have space around for awesome convection and stuffing extra goodies in there as well.

I'd like to build myself a stick burner someday. That would be a fun project.

To the OP, good advice so far - I would also recommend a large. I don't personally own an Egg (I use a Humphrey's cabinet smoker), but have a friend who has a large - it is a nice size.

I’ve been smoking on a CharGriller Akorn for about 7 years. It’s about the size of the large BGE. For me, the efficiency of the large would outweigh the few times I’d need a bigger smoker. I can do 4 or 5 racks of ribs at a time, or a whole packer brisket, or two or three big butts at a time, and it holds 250 for 6 to 8 hours on half a chimney of charcoal.

I keep hoping it’ll rust through or break somehow so I can justify a BGE, but it just keeps trucking.

I have a Large Kamado Joe - it works for my family - and I have no issues cooking for up to 8 people when necessary. I was looking at the BGE, but found the KJ hinge and Divide and Conquer rack system to be a step above the BGE.

My wife bought me the medium BGE for my fiftieth birthday. I have used it year round for nine years. Family of four. Works great. Top band of steel that holds top on got loose and top half fell off and broke into a lot of pieces. Since I was registered with the BGE Co., replacement top half was $115.00 delivered. I mostly cook ribs and pork roasts. Steaks on special nights. I love it. I would get a bigger one if the opportunity came up. Good luck. D

As big as you can get. You’ll regret it if you get smaller.
