I ended up at a big series of release site in a WMA since that was the largest parcel of public access land I could find. I was hoping to hunt the more difficult terrain around the release sites that I expected the fair-weather hunters would ignore. I was right. Almost everyone (about 40 that I counted) stayed in or close to the release fields looking for slow-flying farm birds.

I found one that strayed away from the release site and wouldn't fly at all. I ended up telling the dog to fetch him rather than shooting him on the ground. The dog ran him down and brought him back to me so 1 bird with no shot fired.

I saw 4 woodcock for the first time in my life. I think I'll like them. My first impression was that they're fast and small like quail, but they seem to fly directly away from you instead of all around you in aerobatic loops.

I didn't see a single ruffed grouse though so I guess I need better habitat for that.

All in all it was a good day out in the woods with the dog.

The best time of the year is here. Yeah, my bow season is over, but now I'm looking forward to the rise of a cackling rooster on a crisp morning...

    IMG_1120.jpg

And the thump of a 14 pounder when he hits the frozen deck...

    IMG_2747.jpg

He's not mine, but that pointing yellow lab in the pic is absolutely crazy. Yes, all hunting dogs get excited, sure. This one is certifiably NUTS. He's 5 this year, and I've had the pleasure of hunting with him for--this will be the 4th season. It's gonna be good!!

I'll allow it, but only because you led with the pheasant pics.

You may want to get some professional help for that goose thing you've got going on there. I hear it's contagious and spreads if you're not careful.

No need to infect anyone else. Looks like your case is terminal though.;)

Xma, that pic of your lab carrying that live goose by the wing reminded me of my now passed golden; Doc. He got spurred in the face once by a live phez and figured out how to pin it down and grab it at the base of the wings and bring it back. The phez's spurs would be facing away from him. I now had to figure out how to grab a kicking phez and try not to get spurred LOL I miss that old man.

I’ll tell you them dogs figure it out all right. It’s actually my buddy’s lab, and he is an animal. When a wounded goose sails and he goes after it—reminds me of a linebacker called LT going after Theismann.

Delmar Smith has trained so many national champion bird dogs over a 75+ year career that he can't remember all of them. He's also a member of the national field trial hall of fame. He once told an interviewer that the only perfectly trained dog is the one that only has faults you don't care about.

My lab has a bad habit of grabbing geese between the wings from behind. If they aren't dead and start flapping, CRUNCH! and it's all over.

By definition, crunching down on a bird is "hardmouth" and a serious fault, but it doesn't bruise any meat so I decided to just live with it. I only go goose hunting once every few years anyway.

Only had a couple hours to hunt this morning and I made it happen. Dogs had a great time too.

Had a great season opener. The tundra has opened up a way for me to explore more terrain now.

I haven’t seen quail, chukar, grouse, or pheasant in Maryland in years. We do get doves, but our season started with lots of rain in the prior months. Our opening weekend the humidity and temps were so hot, the birds wouldn’t fly. One of these days I need to go out there and join you all. I love bird hunting.
