    Hello friends,

I've bought my truck(2014 5.7 gas) at 67k flat. I was told the maintenance was done on it, meaning oil change tire rotation etc, by the seller but I decided to do my oil change right after. Not to my surprise, nothing in terms of oil change was done. Oil filter was filled with gunk. Color was dark, it looked like small chunks of mud. Oil was dark af just as my future. When I saw that gunk, which looked like mud, between almost every pallet/lip/sheet in the oil filter, I decided to do my oil change 1k after. Gunk was less but was still present. Now at 73k I did another oil change and still seeing gunk between the sheets of the oil filter.

I would not care because it is definitely not as bad as what it used to be but my friend at his shop showed me another filter of a 5.7 tundra that he changed just hours ago. That one was a year older model with 5k more miles than mine. Filter was same color but absolutely no gunk in his.

I have not had this car not even for 10k miles but I've done probably 4-5 oil changes. What should I look for to get rid of this gunk in the filter. I've been using Mobil 1 0-20 with toyota filter but this last one I put a wix filter in it. I feel like with regular oil changes I am managing the problem and not solving it.

I would bet that the oil filter had never been changed. Most likely it was serviced at the same place and they either never changed the oil at all or only did a fluid exchange. Too lazy to pull the skid plate off. In the old days I remember some people would use transmission fluid to flush it out? Something like filling it with transmission fluid, running it for short period of time and then draining it out. I’m sure there are other options. Either way that sounds very shitty.

Try Seafoam. Add one ounce for each quart of oil. Idle for 10 minutes, then drive gently for 20, then drain the oil while it's still warm. Keep a close eye on the oil pressure the entire time. If it spikes or drops, kill the engine and have it towed to a garage. There's a small chance that some of the sludge can clog an oil galley and damage the engine. If the engine's that badly gunked, there's a chance that could happen no matter what you do.

Don't take a valve cover off, you might have a heart attack.
I suggest you start monitoring your oil pressure to make sure nothing goes seriously wrong.

Can vouch for the seafoam. Stuff works great at cleaning up engine internals. Might be worth it to do this twice . Get one treatment in, change oil then drive a couple thousand miles and do it again.

After my experiences with my prev car, I can absolutely believe that.
    I welcome any suggestions. Thanks!
I know about seafoam I am just not %100 on doing it.
I actually know the seller personally. Truck was bought at an auction that was held literally two days after texting him that I am looking for a tundra. It was not something that was in his lot etc.
No sorry. I amma stop by my mechanic's place today anyway I will ask if he has the filters.

I was going to say seafoam..
I think I remember a member here named professional hand model (lol) saying he used a product to flush his old engine..??
Unbelievable how a lot of people don't take care of their vehicles.

    The good and the bad:

The good- you found it and are trying to resolve it.
    - Toyota has a full bypass system, so that’s probably why the motor is in better shape than one with a screw on filter.

The bad- the motor oil has been running in full bypass without filtration.
    - Most likely, engine life has been reduced. How much? Your guess is as good as mine.
    - If you decide on taking on this endeavor, just buy a box of Toyota filters. You’re gonna need them.

If your still reading and didn’t decide to dump this truck (wouldn’t blame you), get some transmission fluid (3-4 quarts) or seafoam, cheap oil, and some time.

Drain about a quart of oil out of the sump. Add one quart of transmission fluid or SF. Run motor at idle for 10 minutes. Drain oil and change filter. Do this a couple times. The high detergent oil will really clean the sludge out of the motor. On the last oil flush, do not use transmission fluid or SF, cycle the oil through a 10 minute idle. Drain oil and filter. Put the good 0W20 and filter. Run for 500-1000 miles and change filter. See what you find. Hopefully that you see a clean(ish) filter.

Y'all decide which one is mine :)
Edit: looks like this is grabbing the most attention. This is at least my 4th oil change within 7k miles of ownership of a used one. Pic above is from a truck with 5k more miles that had oil changes every 10k miles or so.

That looks like sludge from a motor that didn’t have the oil changed enough.

Do exactly what @ColoradoTJ posted and use the trans fluid. It's still an oil but has a crap ton of detergents in it.

I've owned several NA Miata's over the last 25 years and they are notoriously known for the lifters gumming up and not pumping up all the way. The fix was flushing with trans fluid, although just a little different than what TJ stated. A something "Twisty Flush" they called it.

Miata holds about 4 quarts of oil and we'd drain about a quart and add about a quart of trans fluid. We would also idle it for 30-40 minutes just one time instead of several 10 minute runs. Drain it, refill with oil/filter, 20 minute drive, and drain/refill again with another filter change.

    Done deal.

Oh wow. I was expecting WAY worse. Some of the filters I’ve cut apart would make that look brand new.

BG MOA or Quick Clean products might be worth a shot. I haven't personally used these two, but have used some of their fuel treatment and it worked great. BG has a good reputation.

Yeah, that could be an abnormality from the manufacturing process that made it look like that....Excessive glue perhaps? Then that shit kinds burns up and gets black on the filter. I wouldn't worry bout that. Actually if you look at the filter itself, the top one looks dirtier aside from the middle. The question is where does most of the filtering happen?

Moa is for older worn engines I think not to mention it's very expensive. Bg is just down the way from me. They are doing a major addition to their facilities.

    Liqui-Molly flush it. $15?

Heat engine up then put it in and run it for 10 minutes. Drain oil and be amazed at how dirty it is. Mine did not have chunks either before or after. My engine was fairly well maintained since its purchase.

I immediately refilled with new sacrificial oil (no Liqui-Molly this time) and new filter and drove for 25 highway miles. Came back and drained that oil and it was dark like it was 6k miles old!

Refilled with Mobil1 5w-30 Full Synthetic and another new filter. Dip stick still looks clean with 1k miles.

Sounds like you may want to call Liqui-Molly or go to their website. Grab a 5 pack of Toyota Filters and use 1 on the intial flush, then another on the sacrifice flush and then swap in a new one every couple hundred miles till the chunks are gone.

That’s how it looks after five oil changes and 7000 miles. He didn’t get pics of the first one.

I know it's a bit late in the game for the OP but pull the oil filter cap and take a peek inside. Is it a nice golden color or is it black?

That's the first thing I do when checking out a used vehicle. If it's black/dirty I go no farther and walk away.

Thanks for the info. I am definitely leaning towards this than seafoam. Do you have an Amazon link for the exact bottle you've used? Just want to make sure. I've been reading reviews there and someone mentions this stopped the engine sounding like a diesel which mine does time to time.

Read the reviews. The BMW guys get sludge due to the design of their engine. They were the ones that gave me confidence in doing this and the idea of a secondary sacrificial flush after a short highway drive.
