maybe im crazy but i test drove alot of tundras while looking. for good comparison, one was a 2015 Limited with the same cab, and same engine - it still was quick dont get me wrong, but when i settled on my 2012 SR5 TRD, i accidentally burned rubber when pulling out of the dealership the first time because i was used to my v6 chevy. it is possible the previous owner had a tune done i suppose. but with many toyotas in my family, ive noticed the previous generation 4runner is much quicker than the current.
ive heard before that toyota adjusted the acceleration for "comfort" in the new models, any truth to this? i swear second gens have better acceleration

Yes and no. The 3rd gens don't have the same pedal response, it's retarded, literally. If you turn off the nannies and use tow haul the 3rd gen is as quick as a 2nd gen IMO. The throttle response on my '16 bugged me so much that I put a tuner on it.
The throttle response on my '07 was super touchy. You had to be careful not to snap passengers heads around when accelerating. My '10 seemed a bit less touchy but with the '16 I felt like I needed to call ahead for an appointment to accelerate.

I love the quick throttle response of my '07 5.7, but I have read more recent 2nd Gen trucks are less responsive. Maybe Toyota changed it because some complained that the throttle on the earlier Gen 2s was too touchy for them.

I also noticed that when I test drove a 2012 compared to my current 2018.

My 3rd gen 4runner felt quicker/snappier than my Dad's 4th gen and my friends 5th gen.

I haven't been in a 3rd gen Tundra, but my 2nd gen is almost too quick off the line. Spins easily on gravel/sand over hardpack.

My '13 is very responsive. I get complaints sometimes when people borrow it, but I love how responsive it is. I have driven a couple of 3rd gens and my '13 is definitely more snappy off the line.

My 08 had a more Faster response on take off then my 17. Put the 17 in beast mode and it almost feels the same. I still preferred the response from my 08 as the power was there no need to turn anything on

It may also depend on the rear end gearing as well as throttle response. Same motor with different gears will produce a different acceleration feel.

The 3rd gens are tuned (throttle response) a little different, but the Tow Haul (Haul Ass) mode gets it back to similar to the 2nd Gens.
Other than that it is mostly the color that makes the difference - White is much faster, regardless of generation.

Our 07 5.7 pedal response is so "touchy" that I installed a Pedal Commander to "retard" the pedal response as needed.

Same engine, same transmission rear end etc. just different throttle response. I have a bully dog BDX tuner that pretty much makes it feel like a second generation throttle response. Just yesterday I change that setting back to stock. I love the way it felt but sometimes going over bumps would cause my foot to slightly move on the throttle pedal and occasionally my truck would downshift. Plus when going off-road it made it kind of jerky when I would go through a rough section. I may try trail throttle mode on my tuner next time.

I thought the throttle on my '10 was way too sensitive also, especially from a standing start. Most of my daily driving is through town, stop light to stop light, so I purchased a used BullyDog from a forum member here and dialed that twitchiness down a couple notches. I really made a huge difference in throttle response.

Hit the Tow/Haul button and it's right back to the super sensitive, stock throttle response.

It's amazing to me that the newer Tundras feel as doggy as they do. I came from an 07' Tundra 5.7 DC and it was whip fast. Sold that Tundra to a good friend and after I got my brand spanking new truck I thought something was wrong with it. My friend and I drove both trucks several times and were baffled. I have never purchased a new version of a car/truck/suv I've owned and had it not be considerably better in almost every way than the out-going model. Toyota has some ridiculous backwards logic. Yes the pedal was very sensitive on the Gen 2's, but there is a real simple solution TOYOTA, different dive modes via a little switch that costs nothing for a company like Toyota to add "Sport, ECO, Comfort". Oh yeah its hidden in Tow/Haul to turn our trucks into "Beast Mode", that is BS!

I bought the Pedal Commander, best money I've spent on my Tundra just to make it respond like my 10 year old Tundra?!?!

I've had the pedal commander for several months now and it works exactly as you would expect, the pedal response is instant and Ive grown used to that response, everything is now, need to pass, done! Need to merge quickly done!. As a test the other day I turned the Pedal Commander off completely, its not a joke, its not funny or even reasonable, the Gen 3 Tundras are complete dogs.

Just put your foot into it more. Same difference. It’s not a dog if they run the same quarter-mile times

when I first got my truck I had a hard time adjusting to the snappy throttle. Coming from a loose pedalled Chevy it was like a race truck.

It's a dog with fleas, "the foot into it more" in a real world situations is not practical. It won't even maintain a constant speed on the highway. Crossing busy multi lane highways is not safe. I understand its all the same setup 5.7 etc, but my question is why would Toyota do what they did, makes no sense.
