Totaled Camper.....What now?

1 month ago my Toyhauler fell victim to 3 of my neighbors trees during Hurricane Florence. Ended up with about 20 punctures in the rubber roof, but surprisingly no structural damage. Water did get in and I am worried about the substrate in a few places, but no damage to the inside, and it's all aluminum framing.

I was able to get on the roof, cut off most of the branches, and gorilla tape everything up the next day. I took the camper to my local RV shop, strictly repairs no sales, good guys. They quoted $4800 for total rubber roof replacement with some substrate repair. Based on everything I've read, that's very fair pricing for a 28' roof.

Well today the insurance company sent an appraiser over and he mentioned that he's pretty sure it will be totaled. I'm surprised and a little pissed. I like the toyhauler a lot, but have no interest in buying it back only to have a salvage title.

Anyone else been through this with a camper, trailer, or toyhauler?
What are my options?

Wait to till you hear what the payout is.....you might get enough to go get a new shiney one.

 

I didn't know a trailer could have a salvage title.
I think I'd take the insurance settlement, buy it back, repair it and pocket the remainder. I would think the remainder would be enough to offset the resale hit for a salvage title?

 

My issue with a salvage title is that I can not get comprehensive coverage on it again.

I'm interested to hear their payoff amount. I did very well when I bought it. So if I made 1k-2k off the insurance value it would make it a little easier to accept losing it.

 

I learned another new thing. Didn't know you couldn't get comp. ins. on a salvage title.

 

There are a few insurance companies that will write you full coverage policies on salvage titles after an inspection by them or the DMV, therefore turning the title into a "rebuilt" title. Others will write a policy at a reduced rate with a higher deductible. My insurance company will only do liability, they want nothing to do with repairing a vehicle with a salvage title.

Again this is only specific to campers, I don't know how salvage titles on cars/trucks are treated.

 

I totaled a motorcycle due to horses jumping out in front of me at 4:35 am a few years ago. They offered me a replacement cost at $xx. Or I could have it at a salvage and $xx/2. I took the total amount as driving a motorcycle with a bent frame per BMW shop was not conducive to good riding.

I would think they would cut you a check replace it with a similar one priced per your area.
