Hello Fellow Tundra Enthusiasts. I'm looking for your help.
    I have a 2017 SR5 TRD-Offroad Crewmax that has approximately 18900 miles.
This past weekend I was out driving in AZ on US-60 between Apache Junction and Globe when I noticed some significant front- end shaking while downhill braking. Those roads can be tough in some spots so I waited for a level patch of smooth road to check and sure enough at 55mph, there was slight shaking.
Took it to the dealership and they confirmed that the brake pads were worn and glazed and the rotors were warped and needed machining.
I didn't think those 18K miles were hard miles and asked if this was covered under the warranty (nope) Service Mgr told me it's a big truck and these brakes don't generally last more than 30K miles.
I don't ride the brake and I downshift where I can. I don't buy the "it's a big truck" explanation because the F-150 I owned before this went 90K+ without needing brakes or rotors.
Anybody else experience this? Is this common with Tundras?

Yup. I’m at 18k on my 2016 and it’s doing exactly that. Looking for brakes and rotors now.

I'm a little under 50% with 32k mi. No, after having 5 Tundra's, I'm not buying that line.

Had the exact thing happen on my 2016 and the service manager told me the same about it being a big truck and small brakes but I don't buy it. They turned the rotors and replaced the pads as warranty. It started on mine around the same time ~18-19K when I was braking downhill. Huge steering wheel shake only when braking and was much worse going downhill the on flat ground. Check out the TSB below it might help at the dealership

Mine are doing the same, started around 30k for me and I'm at 35k now. I will probably go to and EBC set like I installed on my Tacoma.

That TSB is pretty open ended, either they are going to ask you some qualifying questions which they can then use to decline warranty work or they are aware of the issue and keeping track of things.

I changed my pads and rotors at 80K and I probably could've gone another 10K pretty easily.

    18K just doesn't sound right.

I swapped pads/rotors on my gen 2 at 70k, and they still had plenty of life left

It is open-ended like you said but they turned mine and replaced the pads free of charge for me so maybe the OP can do the same and get some more life out of them. Replacing brakes and rotors at 18K is not normal and the reason "because toyota engineers designed too small of brakes for the tundra" I feel is inaccurate and a cop out for the service manager

I called my dealer after reading this post. My 16 Crewmax 4x4 has just under 30,000 mi and my front brakes squeel and the wheel has a slight shimmy to it. The service mgr said they only warranty the brakes for 6 mos or 6000 miles, sounds like B.S. to me. He said it's likely the pads are fine, but the rotors will need turned...Apprx a $ 320.00 job, arggghh!

I've mentioned this in other posts. My brakes did the same thing at around 11,000 miles. I had experienced this on other vehicles in the past also. There is a lot of argument on the forums about what causes this. Some claim that the rotors are "warped" - but it takes an awful lot to truly "warp" a rotor. Another theory is that uneven deposits get put on your rotors during hard stops. It is these deposits that cause the problem. Anyway, whenever I notice this, I just go through a rebedding procedure like the one described in the video below (long video, but good explanation). I have posted the video a few times in the past, but the method works for me so I think it is worth posting again:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdPX6rzuINc

BTW, I am currently at about 70,000 miles on my original brakes. No issues. I have felt this vibration under braking twice with my Tundra. Rebedded and both times and it took care of the problem. Your results may vary.

That doesnt sound right. My 13 E250 work van weighs in at 7700 lb and I tow a 5000 lb trailer about once a week. I usually have to do my brakes every 30k miles.

"Too small of brakes"...I also call b.s. 13.9" rotors in the front, 13.6" in the back. How large should they be?

Mine shakes a little too. I should bring it in for the tsb.
Anyone ever change their brake fluid at home? Manual says it should be changed every 30k miles. Figured if I have the tsb done I can get a quote on them doing the fluid while they're at it. Doesn't seem like a simple job, not without investing in a fairly expensive tool anyway.

Fluid isn't that hard to change at all. Just get a power bleeder and an adapter like this one:

9 times out of 10 the rotors are NOT warped. Make them throw a dial indicator on it and show you the run out. I bet they dont have one handy.

Most of the time the rotors do load up pad material unevenly so you get an uneven drag.

Do the turkey baster and fill flush. Takes a few times to get the fluid renewed and can be done at home over a period of two days. Its cheaper and easier than the shop doing it. Just suck out the reservoir and squeeze it in an old bottle. Top off with new and repeat after a few drives over a day or two.

Been doing this with the trans fluid as well.

I'm at 28K miles, a lot of them hard/fast off-road driving, carrying a LOT of weight in gear, running 35" tires, and just about to change my original factory pads but they're really not even squeaking yet.

I would go with a reputable company like EBC if you are replacing your brakes. They have a history of being quality and plenty of offload guys with bigger tires run them.

Stay away from these fly by night companies that have no reputation except for their own reviews.
