Well I ran out of gas in the Tundra...

Funny thing is the gas gauge was just slightly below the "1/4 mark".

The miles to empty was at 17.

I tried to start after sitting for a few minutes but it just sputtered.

Luckily, I was in a residential area, when I ran out.

I wont let it get below 1/4 again, normally I don't anyway.

Wow. Right below the 1/4 mark. Never would have guessed that.

I would think the same thing.

Not the first time I’ve seen a fuel gauge tank level sending unit fail on a Tundra.

I used to go off miles on my Tundra over the gauge due to that very thing.

So much for the fuel light:notsure:. What's the reserve mileage in our Tundras, 25 miles. I have been living on the edge.

Fuel Sending unit is bad. Had the same thing and Toyota replaced under warranty.
Ran out of gas with a little under 1/4 tank and the light hadn't come on yet.

That blows.. I’ve ran my tundra to 0miles and back to work and home .. usually after you have 0 miles left, it still has at least 4 gallons.. better start carrying a gas can :annoyed:

I have run mine twice down to zero miles left and have never put more than 31.5 gallons in the tank. Gauge was even with the e line both times.

I agree, I am guessing that it is the fuel sending unit. I filled the truck and it took, 27.5 gallons, it was above the full mark. I then drove around 10 city miles and it was already saying I was down to 3/4 of a tank left. I checked under the truck to make sure i did not have a hole in the tank, lol. It is odd, just this morning it was showing just slightly below full, while yesterday it was at the 3/4 mark.

I guess I am going to buy a jerry can and mount it in the back somewhere for now.

I once (stupidly perhaps) tested mine on the way home from a job site 40 miles away, shortly after buying my truck. My 2010 doesn’t have a “miles to empty” display so I just used the gauge. It started on the line below E and went about 1/8” lower after a few miles and stayed there the rest of the way home. I think I put like 23 gallons in it when I next filled it. Since then I just record the odometer at fill-ups because I don’t trust that gauge.

I think that there is something wrong with your fuel gauge, if you ran out of gas with the indicator showing just below 1/4 tank. I have driven 20 miles on “E” all the time and never ran out of gas. The amber light (empty) always come on in truck before my fill-ups. Check your fuses and replace them all, and if that doesn’t work, take it to the dealership.

The level instrumentation on a typical gas tank isn't going to be the most accurate anyway. Precision detectors (like a linear level differential transformer) or the use of multiple level detectors to compensate for pitch and roll are expensive and are unnecessary in such an application.

My 2010 had the low level light come on just above zero, showing 20 miles to empty. I drove until it ran dry, 72 miles later. When the gauge was at zero, and o miles to empty, I still went 55 miles, so at least on mine, there's plenty of gas left at "empty". Total distance on the tank was 352 miles. And BTW, when it runs out, it dies then and there. No stumbling to the nearest gas station, it pretty much just shut off.

Yeah that float in your fuel pump is probably stuck at the 1/4 mark. I usually fill up around 200 miles mark, that's nearing the end of the tank anyways. This truck is a camel, thristy AF.

Update on mine: about a month ago I ran out of gas when I thought there was no way I was near empty. I only got like 25 miles once the low fuel light turned on. So apparently if my tank float gets stuck it doesn't happen in the same place each time. I was hoping I was getting really good mileage all of a sudden but that was a mistake. Should have trusted a year's worth of mpg data. Now I really don't trust my gauge.
