Noise is just noise is like saying art is just art! There is a reason folks pay $$$ for Thiel speakers over Panasonic. The noise is the best part!

When you are talking regarding catback exhausts, there won't be any noticeable results on any car, period. If you are thinking about performance you should be looking at header back, not catback. I don't know where people get these ideas... Like some that think that buying a cold air intake will give them enough hp for their butt dyno to feel.

Most guys do it so their truck sounds like a truck, including me. Heck in the garage I have a turbo that has a quiet exhaust with a waste gate dump which will rattle the harley's when opened up above 14psi.

    completely agreed.
the very reason I love my truck are the finer details... the quilted leather dash and seats, the glitzy led driving lights, Toyota's superior styling. not everything in life can be measured by a statistic while ignoring how it makes you feel.

Easy fellas..... I wasn't calling you out for a noisy exhaust, just asking a question, I apologize if it came across in that way. I'm pushing 50 yro, I'm past the need to hear my exhaust.....actually don't hear that well anymore anyways. Just wondered if there were any "real world" gains from the DD exhaust system. They seem to have quite a following on here. I put anywhere from 600 to 1000 miles a week on my truck, if guys are seeing an improvement....other than sound....I might be interested, that's all.

There has been some proven gains with just the bolt on kits, like the 8". Something like 8 or 9 HP, and that much torque I believe. which given isnt much when you're already in the 400 hp & lbft range, its still something. Other kits have shown losses in power while some are negligible. Also some guys report 0.5 to 1 mpg increase, which I havent noted myself, most likely because I like the "noise" and have heavier right foot now
His header and exhaust kits get you much more power, forgot how much but I think 30 hp? But that's mostly due to headers I think.

I thought your question was a valid one and don't understand some of the responses. It was my understanding that a cat back system with smoother tube bends and a more free flowing muffler was designed to gain back the little bit of horsepower most stock, restrictive flowing mufflers rob from the engines power efficiency. And that a consequence of a more free flowing muffler was its louder exhaust noise. In other words, the muffler is supposed to muffle the sound and by doing so, it robs a few horsepower (1 to 5 hp?). So a muffler and exhaust can still be tuned to sound more aggressively, but is it also a performance system that helps regain the little bit of horsepower robbed by the more restrictive stock system?

Here's a good article that helps explain what I think 906UP was trying to get at:

    https://www.dragzine.com/tech-stori...ffler-design-and-sound-absorption-strategies/

Anyway, BAMufflers (Dirty Deeds) has its own youtube channel. He has a video of a Tundra on a dyno with one of his mufflers here:

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pNu-IFhhI_c

Unfortunately, the video doesn't include the truck's baseline, but it churns out some impressive numbers at the wheel (361, 354 and 350 from what I could see). It's clear Dirty Deeds understands dyno testing and performance, so I can only assume his exhaust systems are designed for such. But yeah, I still think your question was a valid one.

Apologize - no offense taken! I was trying to be funny. Totally understand - I've done a much more major exhaust job on other cars to get more performance. I do believe they show a slight improvement in low rpm/passing power, but my butt dyno can't really tell. My sense is with headers and the DD you'd see some pretty noticeable gains. I've always thought the Tundra was pretty powerful out of the box.

Yea. I’ve held off on exhaust on the truck because I’ve always avoided it on cars that saw no performance gain....I think my 996 turbo is the only car I’ve done it on now that I think about it. Even my old gto with a built motor I left with stock exhaust.

Stoked to give it a shot on the truck though.

Just do it man! It’s super easy. Should take you no more than 45 mins on the ground. 30 if you have power tools!

I will :) gotta just set aside an hour. Want to do shocks and new alternator on the impala first. Maybe tomorrow. Then exhaust and sliders on the tundra.

Oh and make sure you have a sharp 2” hole saw and make sure to lube it and use slow speed. The stainless tail pipe will eat your hole saw if you don’t do it like that.

Not doing the resonator to start. Picked the system up second hand and he kept it.

Does anyone have a sound clip of the 8” system with and without the resonator? I’m so tempted to buy the 8” system butvwant to hear it

Hey, no worries! You posed a valid question. Not everyone is into the rumble, even if that’s all it is. It’s damn cool and well worth it to some, others could care less, and everyone in-between like yourself who’s maybe looking for some practical value.

Thanks for the motivation. Knocked it out this morning in about an hour. Had some very stubborn exhaust bolts that even after soaking in wd40 required a breaker bar with a pipe extension

Do you have a lot miles on your truck? Just trying to gauge my install if i would need to let those bolts soak or not. I have 16k on the clock.

It's a good idea to let those soak. Spray them every day for a few days before.

Here in new England I did that and had good luck with all but one bolt, the rust that we get here is awful. I ended up needing to use air tools and a bolt extracto on one bolt

I’ve got 12k but I’ve done a ton of heavy muddy off roading. my undercarriage bolts are heavily rusted. Example 2 of my skid plate bolts sheared off when I swapped it out. When I removed my fender liner I had another sheer off.

So I’m probably on worse shape then 90% of people. Just soak the shit out of them with wd40 and I think you’ll be fine.

Now that mine is paid for I’m counting the days. Got the new JBL Charge 4 Bluetooth speaker today so I re-listened to about 10 exhaust vids. Hopefully I have mine before thanksgiving.

You may want to look into some PB Blaster as well - I've used it forever and everything I've experienced it is better on nasty bolts than WD40. Write-up here. https://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/how-to/a6064/wd-40-vs-the-world-of-lubricants/

Yes, PB blaster works a lot better than wd40. My mechanic friend uses a mix though that he swears that surpasses pb blaster by a long shot. A mix of oil and something else but I can't recall.

I concoct something similar for cleaning guns. For stubborn bolts, though, I spray them liberally for days with PB Blaster.

The popular mechanics article says this: "And if you don't mind a little mixology, try concocting a homemade cocktail of automatic transmission fluid combined 1:1 with acetone, which can be as much as four times—repeat, four times—as effective as any other product."

I've never tried it - in TX with regular cleaning of the car I've never really had too much an issue freeing up bolts that PB couldn't easily solve - but the Popular Mechanics guys probably have a bit more experience than I do.
