Any suggestions on a performance chip for these first gens? I don’t want anything too serious but I’ve heard a lot of talk about a little more horse and a little better mileage, any thoughts?

There isn't any really. There is Unichip but it doesn't give enough power for the cost if your truck isnt supercharged. I have it, got it on sale long ago and it's okay but I wouldn't suggest paying full price for it.

I've learned chips on a gas motor are about worthless. Tits on a bull, screen door on a submarine, me after 12 one packs of beer(I stole that from someone on here). They just cant do what a real tune will do with significant upgrades. They prey on the weak to make money. Just like the "electric superchargers" that flooded Ebay in the early 2000's. Don't waste your money.

Unichip has a place in the first gen market. If you have the time to tune it. And have their tuning software in theory you could make a little power with it. I’ve seen mixed results with their canned tunes. Although it was all seen in reading posts for the past 15 years. So I’m only regertitating what I’ve read and have never tested myself.

If you have the time to really dial it in, it’s worth a shot.

But, what I’ve found to work really well is upgraded injectors. They really make bottom end way more responsive. You will absolutely notice a difference.

Also, bypass the coolant leading to your throttle body. Just make sure to put it back if you live in a cold climate in the winter.

Also, feel feee to give a call with any questions. My cell is listed on my site.

Great recommendation Keith! The 300.00 is for the set right?

Wait, $300 for 8 fuel injectors? And upgraded ones at that? That's a helluva deal.

Yessir. 12 hole instead of stock 4 hole. And they’re all flow balanced.

@dirtydeeds can you please explain your premise on how a different injector will add performance?

The stock 4 hole injectors are more of a squirt of fuel. Where the 12 hole injectors that we make are a fine mist of fuel

The fuel needs to convert to vapor before it can burn in the combustion chamber.

By being more finely atomized before even reaching the combustion chamber you get a ‘head start’ in vaporizing.

More of the fuel vaporizes. Less is needed. You’re stepping on the gas less to propel the truck forward. It drives nicer. And uses less gas.

I do have one question, what makes yours so much better than other 12 hole injectors found from other companies?

I don’t disagree that better atomization helps efficiency in combustion, but going as far as using less gas is a bold stretch. You’re effectively saying that 12 hole injectors defy physics because they use less gas to be stoich. Stoich is stoich, and the 14.7:1 stands regardless of how fuel vaporizes. Atomization is the efficiency of how it burns, not that you need less to burn.

For the 1st gen guys, the advantages they will see is the benefits of a new injector that probably isn’t gummed up and flows better. However, going to a 12 hole, which is smaller, could potentially cause issues for the older vehicles that may have some debris in the fuel system since the hole is smaller. Ragrdless, unless you are actually changing the size of the injector, it won’t be any significant gains to justify the $300 cost, in my opinion. If you are changing the fuel injector size, when the truck starts up, it will run like shit while it’s fuel washing the cylinder walls, until the O2s heat up and then feedback to the ECM and it starts pulling pulsewidth on the injectors to get it back to stoich. This is assuming the size of the injector isn’t too big that the ecu can’t compensate for it.

For the guys considering an injector change, you’re better off just pulling your injectors, sending them off to get cleaned and flow balanced ~$75-$100, then replacing your upstream O2s for the money.
