I have the opportunity to pick up a 2015 Tahoe loaded up and with only 15k miles Certified at a dealer for what a new 4Runner would cost (about 43k).

Anyone own one and can give me some feedback about reliability and ownership experience?

I cannot buy a loaded up Sequoia with low mileage for anywhere near that price around here.

Have you driven it? You might not like the 5.3l it has with the cylinder deactivation.

My buddies wife loved hers. She wanted something smaller after awhile, thats the only reason she got rid of it I think.

I looked into those as well. The only issue which i ever heard of was the dome lights flickering when engaging a turn signal. Test drove a few but the wife preferred the Expedition.

Traded in a 15 for wife's Lexus. Motor and trans were reliable to 120k. Expect to lose motor mounts, fuel pump, AC relays, and various internal motors and electronics. Door handles are plastic (we ripped two off the sheet metal) Door lock tabs broke, dvd and nav had shut down, dash peeled, etc.

Leather held up.. Engine and trans did fine. Engine was fine in town, but marginal on highway and on steep grades.

I don’t know man. I’d look for an older sequoia that’s in your price range. It will go a long time. Just like our trucks.

Check for recalls. Power steering, and the rear ac lines have tendency to crack. If they do do not go with gm find a local shop to fab new lines. Make sure the front brakes are not squealing.

Had an 06 Tahoe and honestly loved it! Drove it for 225k miles and only had to replace the fuel pump and gauge cluster.

My fuel pump went out at 110k coming back from Seattle.
The handles kept falling off, no explanation there.
Rear AC failed due to relay. Was fine after repair.
It did eat OEM motor mounts. No battery or alternator issues, no water pump or trans issues.
It did like to eject the lock buttons in the air when unlocking.. became a game with kids.
    DVD and Nav died.
Never stranded us.. we made it home on pump but barely..

Hey.. if you like it, go for it. It was decent sized, but no Tundy. Lol

I would think for 43K you could find a really nice used Sequoia.

I need to buy an suv that will fit our family of five with an occasional friend or two (kids and sports). Highlander is too small. Sequoia is too expensive and thirsty (we don’t need two vehicles that average 14 mph). The VW Atlas will work, but German cars are expensive when they break (VW has 6 years 72k bumper warranty though). I have never kept a car past 6 years or over 100k. I just don’t want the hassle of dealership visits. Not sure what to do.

A good low mileage sr5 yes, or a 50k miles limited. I’d be in the $47k range for a low mileage limited. Plus the thought of another car that averages 14 mpg is scary.

iirc there was just a recall for the 2015 Tahoe.
I think they are beautiful and tbh I was looking for one before I got my truck.
I would consider the expeditions with the v8s in them I think those are a little older though like 2014 and back.
In any case it’s a nice truck and looks fantastic. With cpo you should be okay?

2016 Expedition Limited. Decent gas mileage for the size of the vehicle. Only thing i had to replace on it was the windshield.

Gas mileage is 16-17 combined.. You'd be lucky to save $150 a YEAR in gasoline. Again, it's a big suv. Your concerns place you in mid size SUV territory, and if your on a budget, the war your fighting is Size vs Cost vs Reliability.

Narrow your size first. A tahoe gets the same gas mileage as an expedition (worse actually).
You mentioned two children and two adults and gear. Unless you guys are basketball players or pack the house everywhere you go, midsized SUV's are appropriate (if you like larger then forget fuel mileage)

Ok.. Cost in the midsized market? Well... Everything from an Infinity QX, to a Honda, Toyota, and domestics will be all over the place.

Reliability... Dont take our word for it. The research (unbiased and of appropriate scale and geography) wins the golden goose.

Is the Tahoe the golden egg?

Gas mileage is important for me because I drive a lot. The difference between 14 mpg and 17 mpg works out to about $375 per year based on the miles I put on.

I mentioned family of 5. 2 adults 3 kids. And we take their friends along because all 3 are involved in sports.

I would like to stay under $43k. I know, seems an arbitrary amount, but no different than if I say I'd like to stay under $40k or under $45k. Under $43k still gets me a nice new midsize or a relatively new full size SUV. We had a minivan when the kids were young, and although it is probably the most practical choice now, I just can't do it.

Reliability - sure Toyotas are the best. But I never keep a car past 100k and I get there in about 5 years max.

I appreciate all the real-ownership experience that people have shared so far. I'm not sold on the Tahoe, actually shying away from it now. Just got to find the right vehicle.

That $375 a year savings could get eaten up by repair costs, just something to think about. But if your not going past 5yr or 100kmiles with it then that might not matter.

We got an Odyssey over a Sienna. It has a nicer interior IMO. We had a small issues with breaks squeaking but the dealer fixed it eventually.

3rd row of the pilot is 4 inches off the ground. Not even my 8 year old is comfortable back there. Yeah I like the Odyssey over the Sienna in looks. But I am resisting owning a minivan again.

Yup, just looked at it 30 mins ago. Useless third row so it is out.
