My boss got the new Ram about a month ago. He likes it but isn't happy with the A/C. He gets a new one every couple of years. I got to drive it around and it didn't feel and strong as his last Ram, or my Tundra. The dial-a-gear shifter is stupid. That would be enough to keep me from getting it. The tech was pretty impressive and it does look nice.
I traded my last Tundra for a GMC Sierra and while it was nice, got decent gas mileage and had plenty of extras, it also had a couple of electrical gremlins and lots of recalls. When I traded it in there were 3 or 4 open on it.

Personally think the new Ram's are ugly and uncomfortable. If you're jumping up to the 3/4 or 1 ton then go with the GMC 2500HD. Otherwise stick with the Tundra.

I decided to just fix the few reasonably small things going on with my truck and ride it out. The Chevy changed its look, but the interior stayed the same. I'm already bored. The RAM unreliability rumors can't be all rumor. My truck's come this far, I'm gonna take it the rest of the way. Thanks again for all the posts, even the stupid ones by the imbeciles (plumber 802, your crack is showing :).

I also forgot to mention I own a Hemi Ram that’s one of our company trucks (was before I was in charge of making the equipment purchases).
It’s been to the shop more than a few times to fix the POS AC system. It blows cold on the freeway, then shits the bed at slower speeds/stops. My mechanics installed an aftermarket electric fan, along with other AC work - and nothing - still shits the bed.
It’s had serious valve knock since 15K miles and we have multiple recorded service records that Dodge refused to fix.
Rear slide electric window shit the bed on me once too - and wouldn’t close on a 300 mile trip. No Fing thanks lol.

I'd love to see the fine print on these "lifetime" warranties. There has to be some sort of progressive deductible system either the more you use it or the older the vehicle gets. If it was truly a lifetime comprehensive bumper-to-bumper warranty for only $4k everyone would be buying them.

I just wish that Toyota would give us a CM w/6.5' bed option. EVERY other manufacturer offers that. Why oh why does Toyota motor Corp not give us what we want? Sorry to hijack your thread OP. Just curious what you have against Ford?

Here are my 2 cents worth:

Last truck was a 2018 Tundra, no problems.

Before that I had several F-150s (5.0 and 3.5TT), KR and Platinum level; never had a mechanical problem but the electronic gizmos caused constant issues and shop visits.

I also had several late model Rams (1/2 and 3/4 ton, Hemi and Cummins). Despite what some people say I never had a single issue with any of them, the 8-speed ZF is solid and problem free! Resale value is not as good but the big rebates up front make up for it.

    Never owned a GM truck.

Drive them all and buy what you like best, you are the one paying for it.

Since my dear tundra has been in the shop for a couple weeks, my rental has been a 2018 f150 .Not a bad truck, but gutless to be sure .it's constantly shifting back and forth between gears. It is 4x4 but something just doesn't feel right.

The heavy duty optional Aisin tranny that you can order for a Dodge/RAM is made in Japan....just like our Tundra Aisin tranny. No wonder our standard tranny is bullet proof. ..One of the few non US parts in our truck. Same with 10.5" rear end......Hino......good stuff....how many here knew that tid bit????

I knew the Toyota part, not the Dodge part.
I thought or had read somewhere that the transmission was Fiat or something like that, maybe on the Jeeps. Not being funny just regurgitating, info

I recently found out from a trustworthy source that Dodge is going to offer the 392 in the 1500. A 392 std cab short bed would be stupid fast.

I don't know about the new RAMs but previous HD versions are Aisn trannys. Stock Dodge trannys and diffs were nothing to brag about unless fitted with Aisin tranny. Rear diffs are weak. Not sure who makes Dodges diff. All I know is a coworker's friend had a 2016 1 ton RAM and was in the shop twice. 3rd time the rear diff guts were replaced under warranty.

I thought Fana made them for Ford and Dodge, or is that dated info.

As nice as the new Ram is....
Its the first year of a new design. I dont know what all they "redesigned" of the truck, but its always a gamble for a 1st year generation vehicle. You just never know.

But maybe its just a cosmetic redesign and the engine and trans are still the same...

I am late to this discussion. However, I would like to add my 2 cents. As far as, looks are concerned Dodge, Chevy, and Ford updates/refresh their vehicles every year. So, their trucks will of course have a much more curb appeal than say Toyota’s. Nevertheless, that’s all that they offer!!

If looks are your most important criteria for a truck, then I say go for Ram, Chevy, or Ford trucks. However, I must say that the days of looks being the only criterion for trucks, and or, any vehicle are over! No one wants a truck or vehicle that looks good as hell, but, leaves them on the side of the road constantly. Not even Dodge, Ford, or Chevy executives want that type of vehicle for themselves and their families. So, why should we as consumers settle for their crap.

All those auto execs and the wealthy people in our country buy and own very well made vehicles. They know what the value of a dollar really is worth. Poorly made Christmas tree type vehicles aren’t what they buy. The high end vehicles that they buy place emphasis on quality, durability, styling, and reliability. Those manufacturers do not refresh their vehicles every year and sometimes twice in the same year like Ford did with their new aluminum F150 when they first introduced it.

The same principles hold true for Toyota and their vehicles. They emphasize top quality first and foremost. That’s why the don’t manufacture Christmas trees. As we all know it, Christmas trees aren’t made to last for more than a season. Even the ones that are synthetic aren’t made to last for one or two seasons. I’m not wealthy, so my hard earned dollar is spent on the things that will maximize my return. I am Toyota for life customer. Or, for ,as long as, they continue to make top quality vehicles.

I had a 2010 Silverado. Will never buy a GM product again.

My dad has always had F150s, and has always had some form of an issue. Currently his 3.5 ecoboost has waterpump and turbo issues. The only two Ram trucks in the family lasted less than a year and were traded in at Ford.

Probably because of payload issues. The payload is already weak with a 5.5ft bed. Imagine what it would be with a 6.5.

That new power wagon is a nice looking rig. My buddy always gets a new ram. Trades them or leases every three to five years. He's had a couple differential failures. Lifter failures. Rusted bumpers within weeks of purchase. Chrome flaking off plastic components. He never does any off roading and tows only occasionally. All these failures are with low mileage. They do have lifetime warranty on power train though so the mechanicals don't cost him anything aside from inconvenience of driving a loaner or demo from the dealer. My cousin works for Chrysler Corp. He says don't buy one. His has had differential failure, trans failure, lifter failure.

The chevys are gutless and if you're in the snow belt they rust pretty fast. Rocker panels and rear quarters are the first to go.

I drove a new f150 while my truck was in for deer damage. It was nice driving something new. I think it had the 4.6. I liked the sport mode option for transmission. Decent power but nothing like the 5.7 in the toyota. I thought it rode too stiff though. I didn't like how the rear end would jump around in corners if there was a little bump in the road. Another buddy has the ecoboost. He loves it. Awesome mileage. Had something weird with cooling system but no major failures.

No new trucks in my near future. I've got a kid headed to college soon and an expensive boating habit so I gotta nurse the 07 along for a while. It's currently in the shop for a bearing noise coming from rear output of transfer case. Just dropped it off last night. Aside from that I've done nothing but brakes, tires, oil changes, serp belt. No majors with 166k on it.

^^^ This - the OP is just like me - waiting for the redesign of the Tundra. I am also on the fence and thinking about whether to go with a Ram or Toyota.

As I research further into both brands, I am considering doing what @csuviper suggested - lease the Ram for 2-3 years then by that time the new Tundra will be out and hop into that.

Looking back 20 years (1st gen Tundra owner) and currently now with a Land Rover, I am not keen on the low tech Tundra that seems to have frozen in time. The RAM has more of what I currently drive - rotary transmission shifter, efficient engine (19-25MPG), 8 speed ZF tranny, 12,000lb towing, and adjustable ride height air suspension.

I could get a Tundra now and then switch over to the new gen when it comes out but I fear the resale will hurt a lot more because whenever a new model platform comes out, the old models sinks fast...
It drives like my 1st gen Tundra with body rolls with the cab on frame design. The new generation RAM drives like a SUV or crossover - unibody but it's not. Ultra quiet and smooth - makes off roading fun!

Looking at price and affordability, I find the RAM much more affordable - especially on a lease as I have a EP (Employee Pricing) which sets the car price to 8% below invoice and then the rebates on top of that.
So a $64,000 RAM Rebel heavily optioned (Ramboxes, 4 corner air suspension, 3.6L eTorque, 4WD w/ locking rear axle, LED lights, pano roof, off road 33" tires) comes out to $50K which is in line with a loaded SR5 or Limited Tundra pricing.
Currently, for what Toyota wants for a monthly on a low tech truck - I am surprised. TFS is not very lease friendly...

OP: If you need a Chrysler EP voucher, let me know.

This is the one I am looking at for the interim - missing the RamBoxes:

I'm not sure if anyone is paying $50k for a limited, and especially not an SR5. Maybe up north in Canada...

Toyota dealers here in California are not discounting the outgoing 2018 Tundras much - they are still sitting on the dealers lots for awhile.
I think they will sit there till the end of the year because the new 2019 are arriving and I get the feeling the dealers would rather sit on the old MY.

TFS increased rebates to $3,000 but will not let you combine with lease / finance rates thru TFS - it's one or the other which makes the number unpalatable.

Also, Toyota dealers in So Cal do not use any other bank other than TFS for leases....
