    Greetings,
New here so please don't judge me ;) My dealer in Sacramento says I need a replacement tranny $5000, it'll take a week and they'll provide a loaner. Service guy's attitude on the phone was one of discouragement. He's just trying to "look out for me" in spending all that money and other stuff could go wrong down the road. I'm not looking for a "Genie" just want to fix my truck I've had since 7K miles, now approaching 250K. Has anyone had "experience" replacing the tranny of a Gen1 Tundra and what are your thoughts? Thank you :help:

Have you let a non-dealer transmission shop take a look at it? It may be able to be rebuilt or swapped for a rebuilt one at a lower price.

If replacement is needed, there is a market for used ones as well.

After backing up stopping and putting truck into drive, I've been hearing somewhat of a clanging for several weeks or so.

Are they sure it's the trans and not the carrier bearing or u joints? Maybe something in the diff? And does it do it if you don't reverse first? What kind of maintenance has the truck had?

When was last rear diff service? Is there a “clunk”? You didn’t say if it was 2wd or 4wd. Have you lubricated the zerks recently? When was last transmission service?

I replaced the trans in my 02 SR5 Limited 2wd at 86K miles after the OD planetary imploded (common issue), fairly straight forward, put her up on jack stands on all 4 corners in my driveway and used a motorcycle lift to get it down and out, I bought a used trans from LKQ in town (Savannah, GA) for $475.00...It had 60K miles on it out of a 2004, I did have to change out the tail piece with the one from my trans, but it was simple. Took me roughly 10-12 hours with having to locate and pickup the replacement included....I'd do it again myself in a heartbeat. Currently that truck has 260K miles on it and will still give a Mustang a run for it's money...

5K for a transmission?? Seems extremely high...
