We’re looking at a 26 foot travel trailer. 6400 lb dry , 8000 lb. gross. 600 lb tung weight. Is this going to be too much for my truck? Going over mountains and such . We want to travel for 6 months of so.
    Thanks for help on this.

That’s too much in my opinion. I have the 5.7 and tow a TT with 4500lbs loaded. I think 8000 is too much for the smaller engine.

I wouldn’t do it if it were me. @ColoradoTJ will have good input here.

If I'm fully loaded in the toyhauler with the golf cart and dirt bike I'm right around 8000-8500.

I have a 5.7. It's still a lot of weight and the truck really feels it. I don't tow much more than 2 hours with that load. Tow haul, 4th gear, 65 mph. Anything more and it shifts nonstop.

I usually run tanks empty with just the dirt bike. Closer to 7500. That is fairly easy for the 5.7 power wise. I've pulled that on a couple 1000+ mile trips.

I've never owned the smaller V8 in the Tundra so no experience there. I can't imagine I would want to carry what I do with less power.

I routinely tow about 5000 pounds, and my truck is really working going up hills (5.7 with CAI and TRD exhaust), about 7 mpg fuel economy. The BFG KOs certainly aren’t helping in terms of mpg. Regardless, your truck might be rated to tow that trailer, but that’s not the same thing as “it’s a good idea to use the truck to tow that trailer.” Just my .02...

What mountain ranges we talking here?

Are we going to be at gross trailer weight?

Your specific year and engine have a max capacity of 7800 lbs if I remember correctly.

Do you own the trailer yet or just looking?

We want to travel California. Then Utah on the way to Georgia. We have not bought a trailer yet. I think my option is to get a used 3/4 ton truck. $35,000 for the trailer and another $40,000 for a truck.

Don’t rule out a 1 ton single rear wheel. Rides the same, way more capacity. Probably a great idea to go bigger. The mountain passes in Utah are killer.

If you’re traveling for six months, a diesel might also make sense...

    Yes thanks
I have considered this. My brother in law has the ram diesel . Loves it. I’d hate getting rid of my Tundra!
