Elite 5 HDI. For what you're doing it'll probably serve a lot better than any garmin will.

What I am after most is topographic maps with contours and elevations as well as unmarked trails and dirt roads.
The only place I think that this is available is downloading to a apple or droid or a hand held garmin. Do you have any alternative?

Personally I have a Garmin 2639LMT and have it mounted on the beanbag sitting in the bathtub on the dash. I bought the extension cable and installed another power port under the dash near the kick panel on the drivers side and ran the power cable stuffing it between the windshield and the dash to the drivers roof pillar and down to the power port, that way you see very little of the power cable. the unit moves very little with the highway driving I do and the big screen is really nice on these old eyes. I ran across this a while back and couldn't resist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVv6g-D7unQ

IMG_0293.jpg So I took the advice from further up in this thread and got the iPad mini. Loaded Avenza, Gaia, and Topo maps. Works awesome, plus the video camera works well to record trail adventures out the front!

Looks awesome! Does it work off of wifi or do you have to pay for data? And what mount did you end up going with?

The maps are all"off line" down loads and the little arrow moves along from the gps that's in the iPad. (I am not sure how this works)The mount is an Akron Friction Dash Car mount, $29.75. I have loaded maps from Gaia, Topo Maps, and Avenza. Anything that requires a cell link would not serve me well.
Hope this helps. I'm sure as I use it more and get more maps, I'll have problems and solutions....

How come we're not all mounting iPad minis into our dashes? Is there a sound quality drop with the lightning connection? It really seems like the best option as far as versatility and the ease of use are concerned. The Entune system is the worst part of my truck.

I'm not doing it 'cause I'm worried about screwing up other stuff. I'm not as tech savvy as most of you guys and want the truck to last at least 20 years

Hi do these apps charge you a fee to download the maps for offline use? I looked at Gaia but i thought that the topo maps required a yearly usage fee.

Some are charged for, others are free. I’ve not paid anything yet. I’m not going to get into a yearly fee. I will go back to the old hard copy Topo maps and throw the iPad out the window, before I will do that!

I downloaded an app for my iPad called MAPOUT. It has unbelievably detailed topo maps that show dirt roads and trails.

There's a particular route in the Allegany National Forest that I've been keen to drive, but didn't want to get in there without a good mapping system.

That place has zero cell signal, but like @gosolo says, the iPad WiFi version still follows the track (I have no idea how).

I ordered this cup holder mount to hold it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F0IQTE8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Will report back and post pics.

Does mapout charge when you download their maps?
I’m currently using Topo Maps and the downloads are free, but take a few hours if the area selected is large.

Got the mount today. It works pretty well, though I wish it was a little more rigid.

It didn't lock into the cup holder as tight as I would like, so I put a few pieces of 3M tape around it. Now it holds like a bear.

I've been considering upgrading the HU with a expensive solution in the likes of a Kenwood or Alpine ($1.5k+)

I'm looking for a better car info, nav and entertaining (vids) source than Entune. During the thought process an iPad Mini (or a small Android tablet) has crossed my mind.

I agree with @gosolo in not getting into a complicated 'solution', plus, a tablet can be easily removed for security or if upgrading to a new Tundra (eventually)

The only functionality 'missing' that I can think of will be car info on the tablet but I can live with that.

Great ideas and feedback on the thread!
