17" Wheels on 07+ Tundra

"My truck came with 18" wheels, why would I want to run a 17?"

Following the release of our 5x150 fitment wheels - designed specifically for the Toyota Tundra and Land Cruiser - we've seen this question enough that we thought it might be helpful to provide our thoughts...

1) A 17" wheel will provide more sidewall than an 18" with the same diameter tire, which translates to increased on-road ride quality and off-road performance.

2) There are far more tire options available on the market for a 17" wheel, meaning that the purchase of 4 or 5 tires will give you a broader selection and can save you a good chunk of change opposed to 18's.

3) Reduced unsprung weight / rotating mass. For example, a 35" tire with a 17" ICON Alloys wheel is going to weigh less than most 35" tires with an 18" wheel. This helps to improve vehicle dynamics during scenarios like acceleration and braking both on and off-road.

Tentatively, yes on Compression. As of now the Alpha in 17" are not on our list of products to be developed for 5 on 150 pattern.

 

That truck looks a little off, not in a bad way. That's a double cab with a crew max bed? Am I right?

Hey Icon_Adrian and @sdhq_offroad, This truck looks awesome. Are these 35's on this rig? How much lift does it have? The tires look a little squeezed in but I'd like to get my rig set up like this eventually.

My truck is stock except for a leveling kit and (like everyone else) I'm wondering how big of a tire I can fit without carving into the body mount.

I'll eventually be upgrading the suspension but want to do 17" wheels/tires as my first upgrade. Three different local tire shops advised me against going to 17's because there aren't many wheel options. I'd like to install 17's and be able to keep using them for a few years as I slowly do the rest of the upgrade. I'd like to start off with 34X10.5X17 or 285/75 R17 BFG tires and these Icon wheels are exactly what I was looking for, but would like to hold off on doing a bigger lift for a while.

I had a Tacoma before this and am just starting my Tundra project.

 

Technically you can fit 35s on a stock 07-13 tundra with no lift, the correct offset wheels and minor trimming. Pic of one attached.

Full depth siping is nice....but with falkens you get a heavy tire

 

You do but for me the pros outweigh the cons

 

I personally like less unsprung weight myself, but everyone has different needs and what works for one doesn't always work for others.

Not sure why that tire shop gave you that advice. Here’s mine with Icon Rebounds wrapped in 285/75/17 Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLTs. The tires were about $400 cheaper than the cheapest 285/70/18s, which are comparable in size.

 

Completely stock suspension?

 

6112s up front at 3rd setting (1.9") and 5160s rear at stock height. No rub.

 

That is correct.

 

I still have some work to do but it’s getting better.

Can you do a picture fromt the front showing how much it either tucks or sticks out? these might be my next wheel and youre running the tire size id want as well!

 

I thought 18 in tires weight less than 17 in tires. No?

After a search I see 17's weight less

 

I’d rather that they stick out a little more so I’m planning on just putting in some 25mm spacers. Here are a couple pics.

Any rubbing at all? just trying to prepare myself, im doing a 2.5-3" lift and im inbetween a 285/75/17 or the 34". i want tall and sorta skinny clean with the lip. not sticking out toooo much.

 

No rubbing at all. Probably 1/2 to 3/4” clearance in both directions and I didn’t have to remove my front or rear mud flaps. The pics show the closest that the tires ever get to the mud flaps on level ground.

34” x 10.5 (and the metric equivalents) are perfect with just a leveling kit if you don’t want to do any trimming or mud flap removal.

The negative for me was that the tire size was hard for me to find in stock, especially the 285.

If I could do it over, I’d probably rather run 35’s, remove the mud flaps and do some plastic trimming if necessary. But that’s just me. I’m looking for a bigger/taller setup but it’ll have to wait now. I’ll focus on other improvements first at this point.

For all you that have 17’s how well can you get your wheels balanced since the calipers are in the way of weights?

 

When I first got my 17’s and tires mounted, they rode smooth as glass for the first 75 or so miles. Then a bad wobble developed around 60-65 mph. I suspect a weight or two must’ve fallen off. Not sure if it hit the caliper. I took it back and they were able to balance them again, but I noticed a slight shimmy again, just not as pronounced as before.
