morning, I am looking to get my first tundra !! Kind of excited about it actually. I'm looking to get the 5.7 4wd double cab or maybe the crew max. I have been looking at 08-2011 models. I'm not sure which years had the cam shaft issues or what year they switched over to the timing chain. I would appreciate any info on the best years in my range would be best. I have done quite a bit of research on the tundra so far comparing to the 6.0 Chevy and for the money I can get a newer tundra with less miles for less money. I currently am driving a 2005 Avalanche, it has been a good truck with no issues other than the 5.3 just isn't quite enough engine for what I need. I tow our trailer loaded down with quads 5-6 times a year, I'm guessing here but around 7500 pounds loaded down with all the gear. Last weekend we went to Georgia to ride which was about a 3 hour drive from the house. I got around 8 miles to the gallon.. And the truck was tired when we arrived. After reading countless reviews on the tundra, I believe it will be plenty of truck for my needs. I don't believe the 6.0 Chevy will be worth the additional money.. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome! I'm not sure about the camshaft issues as I'm pretty new to tundras myself but I do remember hearing they switched to a timing chain with the 5.7l tundras. So 07 and up.

Welcome from Obx, the Sr5 is a step up trim package from the regular Tundra grade. This has towing package, but not the Trd suspension and 4300 Bilstein shocks. The Platinum and 1794 are the flagship models( loaded). It depends on what you want to do. Go with a Sr5 and build it from there, just my opinion. Good luck and post some pics when you get it. :D

Limited is the best trim model. Not insanely marked up and overpriced like the Platinum, 1794 and Pro.

    Congrats. Very nice clean truck.

I think the best trim depends on how much you want to mod your truck and how much of it will be done by you. If you purchase a lower trim Tundra and mod it to be like a platinum model by having them professionally installed (paying professional fees), then your final bill will definitely be higher than buying a platinum to begin with. If you do some of the mods yourself and you are reasonably skilled and you enjoy the process, it may be worth to get a lower trim and mod it (more efficiently). I am not skilled, but I do enjoy learning the process. I definitely know more than I did when I purchased my truck 6 years ago.

The 6.0 Chevy's aren't a bad truck, but having driven both I'd say the Tundra pulls nearly as good despite being different classes. Glad I'm not the only one who thinks the 5.3 is nutless!

Congrats! What're you planning on doing to that beauty?

The 2011 is so far the only year model that has the AIP problem that Toyota is not recalling, which is leaving thousands of Tundra owners to pay for, or do the repairs themselves. And it's not cheap to have a shop do it, over $2k. They used all the same parts that were having problems in the 2011 and started using new parts in 2012

Wow, i wasn't aware of that. That sucks, Toyota really should cover that! Ridiculous.

I plan to do a smaller lift, 20" wheels, 33" tires, already tinted windows, added 2 12" mtx subs behind back seat, probably add a different radio, maybe fender flares, etc.
