My check engine and "trac off" light came on yesterday and when I started my truck there was a sound like when you start a vacuum cleaner. This lasted for about 5 seconds and then stopped. My mechanic told me it was a problem with the "secondary air injection pump" and I should take it to the dealership to get it fixed because it should be covered under warranty for up to 80,000 miles. The dealership says this item is only covered for the 2007-2010 models and that the estimated repair is $2,500. The tech has not looked at it yet to confirm and the service manager says sometimes they call Toyota and they agree to cover the cost. He says my chances are about 50/50. Has anyone run into a similar situation. What should I do?

Yep, one of the failure parts on these trucks.

    Few things.

    1) have you done any of the air injection pump recalls? If not, go to #2. If you have, like me, we are screwed. The bypass may work, but not certain. Go to #3

    2) buy the bypass kit and be done with it.

    3) I have read people using a Chevy part that costs 170.00 and being done with it. Do some research on that.

What year and mileage currently? I didn't see it listed in your details.

I haven't done any of the air injection pump recalls. Where do I find them? Where do I find #2

Where do I source the bypass kit?

How bad is it to continue driving the truck? It says the kit can take several weeks to arrive and this is my only vehicle. How complicated is the install once I receive the kit? Could I have my mechanic install it haha?

Let me search my old emails. I can get you a direct number.

You can keep resetting the CEL, until you go into limp mode. Then you are hating life.

Install is so easy. You can do it

The dealer I bought mine from wasn't Toyota dealer but fixed it for me and I purchased the plug and play off of ebay but still need to install the exhaust plate. I just haven't had time to do it yet. Wife went out of town so maybe I can get it done now. :bananadance:

I've got a thread on this because I've got a 2011 and I went through the same thing.

I was worried about the bypass b/c i've heard it can cause the truck to throw other codes. The dealership quoted me about the same. Which engine do you have?

I ended up replacing the bad pump and the corresponding valve myself for about $300 in parts total. I figured the originals lasted me 100k so the new ones should last forever b/c I also put in the updated intake tube for the pumps. Let me know if you want to try to do it yourself, I've got all the repair manuals from Chilton Online.

my air injection pumps and air switch valve failed on my 2008 tundra. Fixed it my self, ordered parts fromToyota saved 2,000 on parts and labor verses the dealer doing it. It was a pain, but doable if you have some basic skill and tools. Modified the air intake to the air injection pumps. Spent $18 , this should prevent water and dust entering the system. Ran 3/4 inch clear hose into bottom of air cleaner and put air filters on the end.

I am trying to avoid the AIP issue in these things. Do you have a write up on how you did this? How hard is it to get off the "trumpets" to put on the clear piping?

I read on this forum that some 2012's have updated parts that aren't as prone to failure. Is there a way outside of disassembly to tell if you have the improved parts?

Not really, but 'disassembly' only consists of removing the front passenger wheel and pulling back the fender well to see it.

Yes I have same issue. Found out yesterday 2012. Tundra 72000 miles. And I have to pay 2500. Will never buy another Toyota !!!! 2010 is covered on recall and 2012 is not. I guess we are paying for the 2010s and older. It's the same damn part!!!!

I feel your pain man. I was in the same boat with my 2011. Don't pay the $2500, I did the work myself and the parts to replace both pumps and both valves was between $500 to $600. Or do the bypass that others are talking about.

just wanted to throw this into the mix again. We have developed a relocation kit for the pump intake that moves it our of the wheel well and into the engine bay making it far less likely to suck particulate into the pump and cause a failure.

Do you recommend replacing the valves also, or is that a spot check to see if they are operable? And how would you do that / what am I looking for? I'm about to repair mine, tired of erasing codes all the time and then them reappearing.
