Dental question here. So i had a large composite filling in a back tooth and it chipped out and cracked and some decay was very close to the nerve so i had a root canal done. Well 2 weeks later i could feel the tooth when i tapped on it. I told the endodontist and they prescribed a steroid which did nothing and they said to go ahead and get the crown done. Went to dentist to get crown and told him of the discomfort with the tooth and he says hold off on crown for now which is what i wanted. Anyone ever had similar situation after a root canal? Might have to have the tooth pulled? My main concern is why can i feel the tooth when it was not really bothering me before the root canal? Endodontist says its just the area around the tooth. XRays look fine according to dentist.
Damn the jolly ranchers that got me into this mess!

It is that tooth because when I tap on it , it is definitely that tooth not the one next to it. Iv been back in and they assure me the nerves are all killed and my dentist says xray looks fine too. And I have had one other root canal done by this endodontist and it was good.

I’d give it a month unless you’re in serious discomfort. The last crown I got was sensitive for at least a month before I stopped feeling it. Trust your dentist’s advice if you can.

Also, side note - if you need a crown (I know yours was a root canal) and you have insurance, try to find a dentist that has a crown making machine. My crown was about $1500 but they made it right there in the office on a 3 axis CNC machine the same day. I got to watch the dentist model my crown in 3D on a CAD program after measuring my mouth with a laser. It was crazy cool and from start to finish it took 2 hours. No temp crown, no follow up visit.

I Hate teeth and I hate tooth pain. I spent most of April and May in pain after two crowns and two root canals. I had to take obscene amounts of Ibuprofen just to make it though the day. It took me about a month for the pain to lessen, but I still get a slight pain in those teeth every now and then

I had a cracked tooth root a few months ago that didn’t show on X-rays until infection set in. It was incredibly painful for weeks. Finally they found it and pulled the tooth. I was pain free within 2 days.

Its not a bad discomfort right now but it does seem to be getting a tad bit more uncomfortable evey day. Its been over a month now.
Im thinking something has to do with the cracked filling with decay almost on the root. This tooth and not been bothering me at all until after the root canal.
They are just saying that its normal to have some discomfort for a while sometimes. If so thats cool ill just wait but something just does not seem right about it to me.
I wish a dentist could do same day crowns.
I was also needing another crown for another composite filling that has cracked and partially fallen out. Was going to get the two crowns at the same time for $1030 otd. I have been with my dentist for almost 15 years but one thing i would do different is get Metal fillings NOT COMPOSITE. I chew on ice and hard candy and that composite chips out!

    Bingo!!!
I have the most expensive (single) tooth in my mouth.

First dentist didn’t remove all the nerves. Pain for an entire year. Waited for new plan to kick in, then had 2nd root canal.

Over $3k and 2nd root canal later, tooth feels normal.

They say the have for sure killed all the nerves...but i believe otherwise. Or it may be normal discomfort...i dont know.

I used to work with a guy who had so many teeth problems so he finally had all teeth removed and got complete dentures....He was partial redneck. lol

They took more xrays and dont notice any infection or cracks in the tooth but they did schedule me to go back into the tooth and they want to place in some medication and look for possibly a small crack. Its still not really painful but i can feel the tooth more and more. Nothing is swollen. If they do find a crack, they say the tooth will need to be removed. So im hoping the medication solves the problem and i can keep the tooth.

Well its been little over a week since they reworked the root canal and iodine taste was terrible the first week. Aparantly they put in iodine as a medication and they say its normal to taste it for a week or so. I was thinking it was weird to be tasting it because its obviously leaking out of the tooth if im tasting it. They say perfectly normal but i cant find much info online about the iodine part. Makes me worry about it. Its nasty and i sure hope this works to take care of the inflamation. Have to go back in 30 days and get the tooth worked on again.

Just had 2nd part of root canal this morning. Last week they drilled out the root and filled with an antibiotic gel and sealed. supposed to permeate into the smaller roots. this morning, filled the root area.
No talk of iodine and definitely did not taste anything.
    Good luck!

    I'm a retired dentist.

    It is kinda a mystery.

There is a certain small percentage of teeth after they have had a root canal which are sensitive to percussion.

If the tooth was sensitive to biting pressure and it lingered afterward, that is a serious problem.

If it was temperature sensitive, that would be a problem.

If there was spontaneous pain, or tenderness in the jaw below the tooth, that would be a problem.

Unfortunately, no one seems to know why a small number of root canal teeth are sensitive to tapping afterward. Eventually, sometimes months to years later this sensitivity will go away.

If you wait too long before getting the crown it may break and you will lose the tooth.

If they have checked the tooth and it looks fine and if the only symptom is from tapping on it, I think you should get the crown.
