You must need a bed time story if you bother reading this. Really? You realize I've had this truck just over ten years right? This will take a while. You sure? Oh you're at work pretending to be busy? Okay go ahead then.

I don't think there is enough cool stuff going on to consider my truck a build. It's cooler than average, sure, but it's really just an accumulation of minor mods done over the last ten years. Some are great, some are half-assed, some I wish I never did. The last few years I've hardly done anything to it because I got married and that was a bad move for my truck, plus I picked up an 05 GTI and that's a money pit itself. I recently had kind of an awakening will to get back into working on this truck, clean up the mods that I did in a hurry and get it where I really want it.

    What's going on right now?

Rear suspension is an 8 leaf Alcan spring set which added about 2" with my extra 200lbs in the bed and rides like a truck but still has flex. 5100 shocks are keeping those under control for now, still weighing options on what shocks I'll replace them with. I run 4.56 Nitro gears with a solid collar mated to a Kazuma LSD in my rear end, probably my favorite mod and just about the only one I didn't do by myself. I have the diff breather mod too, mostly because it was cheap but also to protect that rear end. There are also a pair of hidden LED fog lights under the bed of my truck that act as backup lights.

Front suspension is Camburg upper arms, Total Chaos spindle gussets, Total Chaos steering rack bushings, Fox coilovers with reservoirs and modified hoses/mounting bracket for the reservoirs. I ripped out my plastic inner fender trim crap and my windshield washer reservoir to properly revise where the reservoirs should sit. NOBODY should buy these coilovers, take it from me. They're due for a rebuild along with my upper arms. My lower ball joints are due for replacing, same goes for every part of the tie rods and my front wheel bearings. I recently updated my brake calipers to the 13WL model and filled them with Hawk ATS pad, plumbed them with first gen Tacoma braided brake lines from Wheelers with banjo fittings. The banjo fittings are a safety move because Fox did a horrifying job of designing coilovers for these trucks and if you like having functional brake lines you should avoid Fox. My nice new brakes clamp down on Stop Tech cryo treated rotors, I'm not so sure what difference if any that cryo treatment made but they work.

Some other crap I've done includes a projector/HID retrofit on the headlights with blacked out headlights and turn signals. Running the high wattage kit with enough light to spread across a 4 lane highway and outshine most luxury cars. JBA headers were a fun day project and are feeding a JBA y pipe and 2.5" pipe to a Spintech ProStreet muffler and stock pipe over the axle and out. I cut the very end of the pipe off for the stealth look, I haven't personally heard a better sounding first gen. I run a Unichip but won't say that it's worth the price even though I got it on a good sale. I suppose it feels like it pulls a bit harder but I noticed it also causes my truck to shift sooner at WOT, no longer will it get into the red zone. Not that I want to bounce off the limiter but it's an observation. I do like the valet mode and the kill switch, I have the fancy 5 mode switch on it too. I've been running the synthetic Airaid filter for about a year now, it's the dry one and I'm not so sure that I like it. The rubber surround seems to encroach on surface area which could have been used for filter media and so far the filter hardly looks dirty which makes me wonder how well it's filtering. I got it for free through a websites points program, maybe I'll try a different one and sell it.

My windows are tinted, that's the only mod besides my rear end that I didn't do myself because that skill is a form of black magic and I'm not good with magic. I'm running an older Alpine head unit which was about top of the line when I got it in 2008 but still runs strong today. It's feeding Infinity speakers all around and an Alpine 1000W amp pushing an Alpine Type R 12 that evicted part of my back seat and took residence behind the driver's seat. Sounds okay for a ten year old system. I hated the plastic and chrome strips on the doors so I painted those with Rustoleum rattle can bed liner. While I was at it I also popped off the bed rail caps and gave them the same treatment, this was maybe 6 years ago and it's help up well for a truck that gets abused. I have two big army green ammo cans bolted down in my bed as storage space, between them is a 3 ton aluminum floor jack, and behind that is my famous Salsa Verde® spare tire. There is a long story behind that radiant green wheel and this is already too long to read so nobody will ever know about that. The spare is held down by a tire mount that I can't recall the name of but it was a pain in the ass to install, if I can find pics you'll see why. I have those cool aluminum latches in the back windows, some crappy LED lights in the dome/map, a scangauge2 on my dash and a bottle opener bolted to my bed. Skid Row skid plate protects my motor, and I have another one for my transmission but haven't bothered to put it on.

I'm running 285/75 Mickey Thompson ATZ tires, they've served me very well over 4 years and over 60k miles. They've gotten lumpy and uneven in wear but that's not their fault, I'm neglectful and they're way past their expected life. I cut out some of the pinch weld area to make them fit too. They hug a set of teflon black KMC wheels, don't know the name but they were free and I like them quite a bit. They look like part of a revolver and they go well with the valve stem caps I've had since before the wheels, which look like magnum shells.

You're still here? Seriously? I would have given up by now or done something more interesting like pick my belly button lint. If you're considering any of the crap that I have done to my truck and want more info, message me. Stay the hell away from the Fox coilovers I mean it.

After I get all the rebuilding done on the front suspension I plan to get rid of the chrome rear bumper and build one out of tube. I am ordering a nice bender tomorrow and hoping to get a bumper built up by around Thanksgiving. I'm going to help my buddy build bumpers for his truck first so we can figure out how before we do one for my truck, he drives a Chevy so I don't feel bad making it ugly. By the time my rear bumper is done we'll hopefully be pretty good at that and we can build my front bumper. After that I'm going to figure out what to do about rear shocks because my 5100s max out before my springs do, plus they are 9 years old and have over 130k miles on them. After that it's time for a DIY bed liner job. After that maybe putting in Mastercraft seats and figuring out a center console. After that I'll retire my 12" sub and put the seat back, then revise my whole stereo with new door speakers, a 5 channel amp and maybe a hidden subwoofer. I'm getting too old for the giant box, it's time to tone it down with something inconspicuous. After that I would probably like to man up and tub the front fenders to stuff 35s. After all that who knows, maybe call it finished, maybe hunt down the elusive supercharger, maybe I won't even get that far. By then you'll be done reading this and I'll probably be too old to hop into my truck and just decide to lower it.

Thanks for reading, the front end tear down and rebuild should start around September 22nd, give or take a weekend. I'll post pics and progress then.

Just giving you shit. You’ve done a lot more that I thought.

After welding the spindle gussets, did you rattle can or powder coat?

Rattle can, nice few dustings of primer and two quick rounds of flat black. Not sure if it happens to everybody but the gussets block that brake line bracket a bit, the one that holds the abs wire and joins the rubber line to the steel one. I didn't care because I knew I would go full braided from the frame down.

I'll mention that I use rattle can in a lot of places where metal gets exposed. When I cut the dust shields for the 13WLs I only had red primer on hand so it looks funny, that isn't rust lol.

Pics of the bed. You can kind of see that the tire carrier has a plate that only fit between the two bed supports. It left my spare in perfect clearance from my boxes and jack.

I took this pic in shade because even my S9 camera is at risk of damage when viewing that Salsa Verde spare in direct sun light.

I appreciate the pics. As I read through, I wasn't picturing a 1st gen. I love that crazy green spare! Write that story up if it Hell SoCal ever freezes over and you're stuck inside with nothing better to do. Now you know there are a few of us who'll read anything.

Can you do photos of that leaf pack? Did you do that knowing the weight you'd carry on the bed, or just added weight knowing your leafs can handle it?

Yeah I have some pics of the leaf pack before install and I'll get some pics of them on the truck today. When I ordered I had told them how much extra weight I plan to have and how much lift I would like. Even when I load it nb up with camping gear (2 big ice chests, fire wood, beer) it doesn't sag much at all.

That bright green wheel, I actually have two of them. I had 6 flat black Axis Regulator wheels which were powder coated. After a few years the color faded and I wanted them bronze. My good buddy Andy (Easy Run Engine Test Stands) has a good connection on powdercoating since he powder coats so many stands. He sent me some pics of their bronze spectrum and none were what I wanted. So I gave him my two spare wheels and said "Not feeling the bronze, surprise me".

A week later, picked up 2 radiant green wheels. They're rad but I work in a corporate world and wasn't committed to arriving with that much flash daily, eventually he gave me the KMC wheels I'm on today.

Hahahahaha TJ knew exactly where my name came from!

Little view of the springs, I have pre-install pics at home I can load in a bit. Also the sub which is bolted down for safety and the new portable compressor. My amp is in the storage compartment on the passenger side, still want to relocate it to the back wall behind the back seat.

Along with this refreshing of the front end I plan to lower the whole truck about one inch all around. I have a pair of Total Chaos shackles that will bring the rear down about 3/4" and will be uncranking the coilovers too bring the front down 1-11/4".

I want it about level and I have grown tired of the way it handles with the lower arms having such an angle at static height. That upsets the steering and puts a lot of joints in a near bind with just a little droop. I am hoping that will help.

Remind us again where you got those headlight assemblies. They look like the mid tint ones I saw on ebay.

A few more pics of the leaf pack during the install, sorry for pick quality this was long ago. You can see how much arch they have here, side by side with the OEM springs they don't look like they would be much taller but they are. These came with pretty nice bushings as well, they aren't the typical poly, if I recall they're some kind of graphite impregnated version.

I can't recall exactly where I got the headlights and signals, I think it was Ebay. They popped up on TS one day and I bought immediately, they don't have any tint to them. They did have chrome in the reflector area still but I took care of that when I put the projectors in. I want to do my front bumper last because I need to work out a support beam between frame rails to support my skid plate, plus think of a nice way to add in tabs for lights which I don't have yet. Might wait until I have some lights to build the front bumper. If you noticed my fogs are still stock and don't match my headlights it's because they've been on the cut list for a long time.

These might be the ones I got, the logo looks familiar. There seems to be a lot of versions now but at the time that I ordered it was one "brand" selling the ones I got and a version that has smoked lenses with black insides. The smoked one cuts down on your light input, I remember a guy getting them and being disappointed.

The mini tundra is 1/12 scale I believe, it's about 16" long and maybe 9" wide. Brushless motor and 3 cell lipo batteries bring it up to around 50-60 mph advertised, haven't put a gps on to confirm. With the dirt tires I don't think it peaks much over 50 but that's plenty fast. I swapped to harder springs, modified the shocks and filled them with heavier oil. Also added a fan on top of the computer. It's 100% water proof, it's been driven straight into the ocean during a beer fueled camping trip. Twice. By my brother. It lived.

Added a Yellow Box plug and play speedometer calibrator, now my speedometer is dead right and no more artificial miles getting logged on my odometer.

Up next: wheel bearings... unless I can find a set of used complete spindles.

Decided I will wait to install this transmission skid plate. I did a test fit and found that I need to modify it quite a bit just to get it usable. Plus I realized it will just need to come off when I rebuild my front end next month anyways.

The plate itself is from OR Fab, a cheap sale happened many moons ago and I jumped on it. Little did I know it wasn't a perfect fit but I will get to that. I liked it because it blocks your cats, and where I lived at the time cats were getting stolen often.

I crawled under my truck and took the rear bolts out of my skid row engine plate. Moved to loosen the center ones and God damn it the nut in the frame on driver side is spinning. Can't see a good way to get at it and the bolt is abnormally long, sign #1 telling me wait on this install. When I pull my lower arms to swap bushings I can easily reach this nut. Sign #2 was realizing that I will probably need to unbolt my steering rack to get the lower arms off, and the plate will block that. I decided to temporarily bolt this plate up over the motor plate to test fit.

With the front bolts in I went to see how things line up at the rear of the plate. The rear bolt holes are about .5" away from where they need to be. I can either oblongate the front holes to slide the plate back until the rear holes line up or I can possibly drill new holes at the rear, have not picked my poison yet.

I'm leaning toward oblongating the front holes, this will better align the plate at the rear to the crossmember.

I then focused on another thing I don't like, there is a cutout at the rear center of the plate which I assumed made way for the transmission drain plug. Turns out it doesn't, I could rig a funnel to angle and get away with that but I think it's better to use a 2" hole saw and cut an access hole out, or even get desperate and cut the plate with a grinder. Might be hard to see the angle here but it's about 4" away from the edge.

I think I will study it a bit more and make my decisions, but ultimately its gonna sit in the bed until after my front suspension is done.

Those are the exact wheels I'm buying next pay day from a friend on the cheap. Do you know if the round TRD center caps would fit them? I've seen tons of SCS wheels with them in Tacomas.

Due to some missing parts that I have but cannot find (not happy about) I won't be able to complete things this weekend. I'm gonna toss my whole place looking for the bushings and grease that I am missing.

In the meantime I'm starting the tear down now. About to put the truck on stands to remove everything from lug nut to frame.

Here's what is going new on either side (minus the mia upper arm bushings)

Here is what I'll bring to a shop nearby to press into my spindles, mostly still in wrappers.

Forgot how long the coils were, when they're off the truck it comes to mind.

Didn't get as far through the breakdown as I wanted but tomorrow I'll get the rest apart. For now...

Do you remember what retrofit kit you did?
