Tips for installing Bilstein 6112?

My 3/1.5 setup. Front is setup at very top setting with a CB shim and JBA UCA at each side. Rear is 5160 with Toytec shackles.

Did it settle or is it still nose high? How long did it take to settle? How does it look now?

 

Mine settled in nicely after a month or so. 6112/5160 setup. 1.9 up front

 

Mine has not settled in yet after 2.5 months, which included two long distance and two off-road trips. I'm kinda surprise by it. But I did give it 6 months to settle and will do free re-alignment then.

 

If I go with the 1.9 setting, and then decide to go to the highest setting, how hard is it to “move the clip”?

 

You'll have to pay for installation all over again essentially. They have to remove them, disassemble the shock and spring, reset the clip to new desired setting then reinstall.

Expectations management. In other words if you talk to them up front they may give you a break on labor if you decide you want to readjust. My shop offered this...although we never got to details as too how much they would shave off.

 

I do my own work, so no big deal for me. I also opted for lifetime alignment, so that is also free. FYI, I highly recommend an alignment when you mess with suspension geometry such as height change.

 

Yep had them do an alignment. I did the 6112s, 5160s and AAL on my taco in my driveway. For 325$ labor I was happy having someone do this job this time around.

 

I agree. I did the 6112s and 5160s myself. I don’t mind replacing the rear shocks. But if I decide to adjust the 6112s to a different height or swap them out for something else, it’s worth it to me to have a shop do it next time if the labor rate is fair.

 

Looks like it has evened out a bit judging by line for spot next to me under truck..

Has anyone had their truck go out of alignment after the lift? I assume I need to align it more often with big tires etc., but thought it would be longer than 6 months or so. Is this maybe just a 1-off? I have 6112/5160/TC UCA/Shackle.

I think it is difficult. Like ripping them off the truck and starting all over. The Fox’s May be adjustable on the truck but don’t quote me.

 

Stock, stock. Tires are BFG KO2 stock size.

 

I dont have many miles on it yet, maybe 5 , to be 100% honest I have not noticed much a difference.

 

Correct. There might be a way or some special shop tool that can compress the coils while still on the truck, but I’m not aware of anything like that. So you have to remove them, then go through the coil spring compression process in order to move the clip to the desired setting, and then reinstall and get another alignment.

With adjustable coilovers, you can just jack the truck up and adjust them on your own with a spanner wrench. I find it easier to do with the wheels off. Still have to get it aligned again, though.

No chance they are making that adjustment on the truck. Compressing those springs is no joke. If on the fly adjustment is a major concern, these are not the right choice.

Just an update..after a week a settle and a few miles front and back are within an 1/8 of an inch or level for government work! At 2.25 for drivers front and 2.5 for passenger front...both r set at 3rd highest or 1.9....keep u posted on anymore settling...looks level to me!

Took the truck in for alignment and get the Falken ATW3s on and all 4 of the cam bolt sleeves are seized. I kind of expected this and seeing what has to be done I left it at the shop for them to sort it out. Im sure it is not going to be cheap but it has to be done.

 

Maybe a dumb question these shocks can be installed on stock without a lift kit? I read something about without lifting the truck the shocks would be maybe too compressed?

 

Well the 6112s are a spring + shock combo-- pretty much a coilover assembly. They replace the stock spring/shock when you install them. You could set the adjustment on the 6112 to ride about stock height if that's what you're asking. Basically if you set the adjustment on the 6112 higher, it will preload the spring more and you'll get more lift. If you set the adjustment lower, you'll get less "lift."

6112 is a kit. It is the lift kit. It will produce .75" average lift at the lowest setting.
