OK, I think this is the plan:
    1. Wednesday Universal Studios, drive down to San Diego afterwards.
    2. Thursday hang with bro in San Diego.
    3. Friday Sea World, drive back to LA afterwards.
    4. Saturday, go to beach, then fly back to Denver in the evening.
What's a nice beach to go to between SD and LAX? Remember I got kids with me LOL

Laguna Beach / Newport Beach. Beautiful beaches there. Avoid Santa Monica/Malibu..super crowded during summer.

Venice beach if you want tats and some smoke :rasta:
Laguna if you want to chill in the sand and get in the water a little bit.

Huntington Beach, just North of Newport has brutal waves and riptide. Lots of surfing championships there. I was there last month and one attempt at boogie boarding with the boys left us 50 yards North and with scraped up knees and sand in our suits. You can ride some biggees ... But if the ocean is angry, she'll kick your ass... And your little dog too.

Disneyland was good. Lines are long year round now, short of Jan/Feb and alot of rides are closed then. Haunted may shut down in October for the Christmas/Halloween skin. It's expensive and parking is primarily a large garage still. Pixar fest is winding down but the kids enjoyed the coaster remake, etc. I go for their faces, not for me. I'd be content in the Grand Californian in the cool lobby with a beer, or a never ending Soaring over the world, and maybe something cool to drink.

Too bad about San Diego. Haven't been down in 10-12 years.

Wife doesn't want to go to Disney since kids have already been to the one in FL; she prefers we do something different and go to Universal instead.

Keep in mind that it's a stretch to say Laguna is "on the way" between SD and LA unless you're dedicating the whole day to driving north. Carlsbad and Oceanside are both nice, moreso Carlsbad for families, but even better, they're just off the 5 freeway. Laguna is off PCH/Hwy 1, which is definitely scenic, but much, much slower to get to LA.

I would suggest doubling the number you have in your head for travel times no matter which route you take. Things out here don't move very quickly anymore, no matter the time of day or day of the week.

Been looking at google and so far most of the time it says 2.5 to 3 hours from SD back to LA. I wouldn't mind taking PCH back for the views. That could my Friday activity.

Probably for the best. Haven't been to Universal in awhile but when we did, we enjoyed the park. Easier on the wallet too.

Good point. But for kids' visiting a beach, I'd suggest Encinitas. Also just off the I-5 at the Encinitas exit, go left over the train tracks. Easy overflow parking in nearby neighborhoods. Clean bathrooms and a decent snack bar. Also good resrarants nearby.

IMO taking the PCH in SoCal isn't special in the way it is up north. Too many stop signs and signals, backed up traffic, cross traffic, pedestrians running across. Plus, you'll see a wide expanse of the ocean while you travel on the I-5 between Oceanside and San Clemente. Traffic in SoCal can be really bad twice each day; I'd definitely not take an alternate route in hopes of better views. Spend your time where you plan to enjoy activities, do all you can to minimize the travel time between.

    Your planned agenda looks good!
