Not sure how much you have heard or read but Cpl. Kelly was one of the few LEO's in this/that region to carry a tourniquet on his duty belt. One of the rounds he took severed his femoral artery. He ended up saving his own life with that tourniquet.

I have one in my truck. I used to keep it in my Jeep when it was streetable.

My tourniquet saved a 17 yr old boys life that was trying to end it.

That was another wild story in itself.

Every second counts with an arterial bleed. Rumor is if it wasn't on his belt, the attempt charge wouldn't have been applicable.

    Much respect!

I drove by this today. Many in the community showed their support by putting these up. They are/were all over the place.

Driving by and seeing this, would you stop and shoot or follow and shoot while he's driving? In Illinois they would argue that your life isn't the one in danger.. Even if you don't get prosecuted, the asshole's family could still sue you in civil court....

    Yes please.
First post after perusing for a bit. This came up in my google news feed and joined to specifically comment on this thread but will probably post now and again any way.

    That said...

    1) Why isn’t DUI illegal?

    2) I thought it was illegal to carry a loaded gun in a car in New Jersey (barring a ccp, which I hear are nearly impossible get even if you’re a good law-abiding citizen)

    3) shooting people without a justified reason should definitely be illegal.

New Jersey should really work on making these actions illegal so no one else is at risk.

Anyway, happy to hear the bad guy was caught and the good guys survived!

Believe it or not I have seen someone on the force get their ass whipped and he was a so called Jiu Jitsu expert. In this case the guy was on high blood pressure meds and straight alcohol. Picked him with his hands behind his back and shook him like a rag doll. It really shook up the guy who thought he could defend himself from any situation he'd find himself in.

Sometimes you run into someone who is bigger and badder than you are.

I would definitely stop and help and if I had to use deadly physical force I wouldn't think twice, but then again that's what I was trained to do. I have stopped several times off duty to assist.

Thank God they will be okay. Sucks that he lived and now gets 3 hots and a cot (meals, clothing and bed).

Just remember a tourniquet is a life saving last resort. Once on stays on until EMS takes over and most of the time a limb is lost. We had our bi-annual RC 1st aid/aed/cpr training yesterday. I asked why tourniquet use is no longer part of our class. RC teaches it in advanced class for 1st responders and whomever wants to sign up. RC is concerned that a lay person may improperly use it. If the injured party is conscious and gives consent...go for it. If unconscious you have implied consent.....for what your level of training is. If you go beyond that you open yourself up to potential litigation. Outer Limit Supply is where mine is from. https://outerlimitsupply.com/product/combat-application-tourniquet/

Negative Ghost Rider, good Samaritan law shields you from litigation. In our class we were told that a limb can go 2 hours without blood and be OK (for the most part). But if you apply a TQ, you MUST inform first responder that you applied one and where as it can be missed if clothes start moving around. So I bought mine bright orange. Also don't forget to write down time you applied on the strap that holds the windlass in place.

Correct...partially>>> Yes, Good Samaritan Laws do shield in "most" cases. Not a total shield. If you perform or attempt a procedure beyond your training and things go south..you could be up shit creek. Rarely happens but certainly could. We spent a half hour discussing this very issue in class yesterday. Some sources claim up to 6 hours before a limb can be irreversibly damaged. Some say 2 or 3 hours. Some say 30 to 40 minutes for the onset of permanent damage. Depends on the limb involved. Blood is a tissue too. The cut off blood slowly dies too. That's why it's important to let EMS know the time the tourniquet was put on. Our RC instructor is a retired RN. She said in many cases the limb is saved depending on conditions (like cold) and limbs that were usually lost in most cases were, the tourniquet was done improperly. Probably why RC doesn't teach that in their regular adult classes, only 1st responder level classes. With her experience as an RN here in Denver for over 30 years.....I'm going with her experiences and what RC is teaching/recommending.
