That guy just burned 40 gallons of fuel on that run.

I have a pontoon. we love it. cant speak for the bigger motors as we have a Yamaha 8hp on a 20'. We got it specifically to go out on a lake that has a motor restriction. Basically its us and a bunch of sailboats and small john boats. At the larger lakes when I see the guys with double 300HP motors I always wonder what the hell they do that they can afford that kind of set up. Then I cringe thinking about fuel consumption.

we've boated steadily all summer my entire 40 years of life and in my experiences (especially in the past 10 years) of pontoon boats there are a few things to know before hand:
    1. they're the jack of all trades and masters of none. while you can fish and ski/board/tube behind one they are just more suited to cruising slowly or outright anchoring and floating.
    2. most are grossly underpowered and underbuying power will always annoy the owner.
    3. getting one with a toilet is almost a must. once you're out on the water frequently heading for shore to let the girls go to the washroom gets old very fast.

No thanks, that thing is just begging to go airborne. As a teenager, I used to race flat bottom bayou racers and had one go airborne on me once. Not a fun experience.

Never owned a pontoon or a tritoon but I am on the water very regularly in my bass boat. I've been on older pontoons that were extremely under powered and really couldn't think of many things that I would use it for other than cruising the shoreline at 10mph. If you're going to need to cover any water at all, I would be getting the biggest motor that the hull was rated for. I've had great luck with Mercury 2 strokes but I believe they do not make them anymore.

I appreciate all the reply's so far. I'm thinking twin or triple motors are not in the cards for us.
OBXTundra has me rethinking the Suzuki option though. I immediately ruled them out because I didn't even know they made outboards. Figured they were a new player.

I have a Suzuki motor as well. They are incredible motors and was also awarded the Boating Indistry Top Products award for 2018. They have great power to weight ratio and sip on gas. Love mine.

What size (if it appropriate to ask a man about the size of his ...)?
    And what kind of boat?

I have. 20 on an inflatable RIB. It was the only brand in its size to use fuel injection instead of a carborator. Also, the lightest in its class. This boat easily pulls my 200lb son on an inflatable with 2 adults in the boat.

ive got a 85 sweetwater pontoon with a merc 120

    IMG_8709.jpg
bought it for 5k used, redid the interior, had the motor check over, and did a full rewire (i did myself) all in im about 10k+ all in and its a fabulous boat! well the 9 speaker 2000 watt stereo helps LOL

i installed a aftermarket aluminum ramp on ours which is great for kids, dogs and older folks, or the lazy like me LOL but cant do a ramp on a tri toon.

let me know what questions you have

oh and i put a good prop on my boat, and its a 2 stroke, has a great hole shot for pulling tubes and skiers alike, its not the fastest but she goes along fine for a pontoon. Would a 200hp efi be nice yes but not needed...

I know a good bit about today's motors and if your buying new, you can't go wrong with any of the brands. Evinrude, Yamaha, Mercury, Honda and Suzuki all make top notch motors. If you want to go rad you could always get a "7 Marine" 557 hp outboard. outboard which uses a GM v8 at its core. A very legit motor but very expensive and heavy.

if you have to choose on a new motor, buy one with a Honda... they are stupid quiet and efficient.

I’ve got a Suzuki 90 on my boat and couldn’t be happier. The motor may be worth more than the hull even if buying new. Get the biggest that your budget and the boat can handle I’d recommend researching the dealer and their service. The big brands are all pretty good but the same can’t be said for sales and service. Good luck!

    @OBXTundra I found a 2014 Hurricane with a Evinrude E-Tec 135 DHL.
They claim 40 hours on engine. Do you know if this is a 2 stroke or 4 stroke?
Is this something I should steer clear of?

I have no real personal experience with Evinrude. We have 1 remaining E-tec on our boats at work. My buddy has one on his Key West CC, not sure of size, but he's never complained about it.

    http://community.evinrude.com/t5/Owner-s-Zone/New-E-tec-135-HO-quot-lemon-quot/td-p/23111

    http://community.evinrude.com/t5/Owner-s-Zone/135-HO-Overheat-alarm/td-p/21187

Initial searches show more problems than good reviews. I don't want to steer you away from something, every brand has issues. Otherwise the Hurricanes are awesome, just about the only other type of boat I would want other than a CC.

The engine hours would need to be verified by a dealer that can run the diagnostics on it. Should be 4 stroke for the year, but again, I'm not polished up on my Evinrude models.

Thanks, that was some good reading. I doubt it's typical though.
I'll probably pass on that one.

Finally pulled the trigger. A 2016 20 foot Sylvan Mirage Cruise. 150hp Mercury. Found it on Facebook Marketplace.
It has a Mercury Inertia prop along with many other upgrades. We are now looking for winter storage and a slip for next year.
