    Howdy,

A potential work opportunity has been presented to me to move to one of the above mentioned areas.

Salt Lake City was one specific city mentioned, which seems nice but expensive.

We need to account for being able to find work for my girlfriend in the banking industry and Salt Lake City seems to have that and Idaho has some options.

We prefer Idaho ideally and will probably push for that area if we decide to pursue this venture.

Open to suggestions, comments, etc from those who live in any of those states. Ideally places that are semi close to a larger airport for when travel is needed. Also, places were property is reasonably priced.

Can you go to any city in any of those states? There isn't much "reasonably-priced" real estate in Oregon near a major airport, but I guess what is reasonable would be relative to where you're coming from. Northern Idaho is beautiful and property is affordable. Spokane is nearby with an airport and banking jobs. I've lived in the Portland area my whole life and honestly I'd probably choose to move to the Coeur d'Alene area in Idaho if I were you...

I'm in the banking industry, and Portland has several offices for larger banks with other jobs besides retail/branch banking. What kind of banking work does your wife do?

I guess I should have added that proximity isn’t as important for me as it is for her as she will most likely get a job that requires her to commute. I will have the option to work from a home office and then be traveling on occasion.

    She deals with compliance/regulation.

We would be coming from Texas. Real estate here is also expensive in my opinion but I’m comparing that to Illinois and Michigan. You can get a lot for your money especially in Michigan.

Yeah, for compliance jobs you're probably going to have to look around the big cities (plus you'll have access to airports). Again, if it were me, I'd try to find a job at a regional or super-regional bank in Spokane, then live across the border in Coeur d'Alene or Hayden. In my opinion, Portland has become a cesspool of nightmare traffic and tolerated homeless criminals, not to mention housing is ridiculously expensive. Seattle isn't much better. I can't really speak to SLC/Utah.

Thanks @BuckWallace, we were kind of figuring that. I am hoping my boss is open to areas as to make it convenient for her and I. She already has a long commute into San Antonio and if this move happens, I don’t want her to have that again.

Well it looks like the settled on area for the position will be based out of Boise. We have until tomorrow night to give my boss the decision but I’m pretty sure I will take it. I’ll keep y’all posted.

Boise is pretty rad, I moved here 3 years ago from Missoula, MT. I grew up in Denver, went to college and lived in missoula for 10.5 years- Boise reminds me a lot of what denver was like when i was a kid (someone will say i still am). Great food and nightlife, no "strange folks" in city limits, or at least you don't hear from them, killer outdoor recreation- hunting, fishing, mtn biking, skiing, rafting, etc. I have had a pile of friends move to SLC in the past 10 years and they all really seem to dislike it after having lived somewhere else. If you love to ski, climb, or mtn bike slc is the perfect place.

I love the outdoors: hunting, fishing, hiking etc. so I think it will be a great fit.

    How’s the snow in Boise?!

Honestly there isnt a ton in Boise proper. The surrounding mtns get a bunch though. Boise is high desert so it stays pretty mild during the winter. Everyone here complains about the inversion, but Missoula's inversion was far far worse. That being said, my first winter in boise was downright gnarly, but that was the most snow on record and a total fluke. I run studded snow tires (cover MT, ID and WY for work, towing a trailer) and I really only seem to need them 2-3 days of the winter around town. The airport here is great, super easy and tons of flights. Housing is still relatively affordable vs other places, but it is the fastest growing city in the US right now. If you need some real estate referrals let me know!

Unless something changes for some unknown reason, we are headed to Idaho here soon. Not sure when the relocation will be initiated just yet.

You'll love the PNW. Not too many big cities though. Look up Banner Bank for career opportunities for SE Washington. Pricing in Walla Walla are getting rediculous but the surrounding areas in the county still aren't too bad.

Lots of great areas here, not really a bad decision at any location in the PNW. All will have their pros and cons.

Oregon. Sux. For taxes. I dream daily about getting out of this state. And moving to Idaho. Or northern Nevada

Nevada has sales tax, Oregon doesn't but they do have a state income tax, if you come to Oregon, stay away from the I-5 corridor from Eugene to Portland, it's extremely left wing and the traffic is horrible. Eastern Oregon and southern Oregon are about the best places to live, probably not the job base you are looking for but it is great for hunting and fishing. We here in southern Oregon consider Portland to be the San Francisco of the north.
