I kept blowing a fuse and one of the map lights wouldnt work after installing LED bulbs so I decided to investigate the broken map light switch.

Pulled the upper console down by removing 6 torx head screws and unplugging one electrical connector.

The map light switch comes off by sliding it sideways off the prongs:

Cracked the broken switch open to find that one of the terminals fried.

Also found that the light connector popped off of one of its plastic numbs. With some pressure on the top it pops back into place.

Found these switches on Amazon. Says it doesn't fit my truck but after install i found out that the switches do fit. They are an exact match.
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FY81BUQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Existing switch is on the left, new on is on the right. Worked just fine when plugged in.

    Success!

Found an awesome temp fix for the switch while you are waiting for the new switch to come in. Connect the inner two prongs with a connector. This allows the light to come on with unlock and the door being open. Obviously you can't turn the light on manually.

Just joined to say that you are the man! I couldn't figure out what the heck was going on after my led light install. The switch and everything seemed to function fine on the drivers side, but the light would not work unless I pressed really hard on the switch. The switch ended up being the problem. Your make shift bridge to confirm the problem was the switch and not the circuit made my day. I now know for sure the switch needs replaced even though it seemed fine. Bro high five your way!

Awesome. Was looking for this switch on Toyota OEM parts websites and the best I could find was an assembly for $90+.

Hello everyone from ATL GA, I am a new Tundra Owner and this is my first post. I had the same issue and after some research and calling around I ordered the part, it took a week to arrive from California and I just received the switch from local Toyota part store, and here is the part number. 84249-0C010 SWITCH, MAP LAMP. I paid around $60.00 for one, I hope this helps.

    Too many to list
I changed the whole upper console due to this stupid switch. Driverside was broken and couldn’t get it to work. Got an almost a new one from junkyard for $90.

A big thank you for this thread! I have a 2018 SR5 Tundra and your information was 100% accurate (even for replacing the rear interior swithces). While upgrading my lights to LEDs I must have screwed up both switches on the rear interior lights. I currently have the connectors in there while I am waiting for the switch. The connectors were a great test to make sure it was just the switches that were causing the issue and nothing else was wrong. I appreciate all of the detail!

Amazing How did you remove the entire Map light console like that? I would like to do the same with my 2018 1794 Tundra, are there diagrams? Thanks!

Just saying this is still helping people.

Is the electrical system so shitty that you cook a switch when changing a bulb?

I had the same problem for fooling around to install new brighter leds and fried 1 of the switches. Found the problem that it was the switch but I was like- where in the world will I buy one like this? So I found this thread and thanks to Amazon link you posted I was able to buy. Just waiting for the new part to come in and fix. Thanks very much for posting this issue and your success. God Bless.

New here. Had my truck since new in 2014. Changed the interior lights. Map light switch blew the other day. Found this form. Worked great. I’ve ordered the switches, but the wire connecter is killing my battery till the new part arrives. Did I do something wrong? Pulled the fuse. Issue is gone. Would like my lights to work till the part comes.

ok, so im sorry to dig up an old thread like this, but i havent seen it asked/answered anywhere.

im glad there is a way to fix if it it happens, but is there a way to avoid having this happen? would it be easier if i take down the overhead console before i go breaking something? ive never been nervous about swapping bulbs before. im almost embarrassed to ask!

perfect. thank you! i got them swapped out last night and made sure they were turned off before i put them in.. used some smaller led bulbs that i had when i did my corolla.

    https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EPA7CZC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

only 4 leds, but they are still brighter than stock. im not sure how people are using the leds with 24 of the same friggin leds! i might go slightly brighter in the dome, but im definitely leaving these in the map lights!

    thanks again!

Wow - what a life saver. I have a 2006 Tundra Limited. The Homelink lights went out a while back and found a link to replace them with LEDS. In doing so, probably while the units was hanging from the roof by the connector wire, the map light switch came apart. When I snapped it back together it no longer clicked on/off. I pulled the other apart to see what I was missing and that one stopped work too. I've been looking for a replacement console but did not find one without the sunroof switches. Then I found this link and saw I can just replace the switches. Great news. And I saw those switches earlier on Amazon but they did not say they worked for a Tundra. But the looked exactly like the ones in my truck. So I'll order those and get them replaced. I'll also order the led replacement lights. But I do have a question. To install those switches, it looks like you have to pop them apart and then align the 3 wires inside and snap back. Is that correct? And you have to wiggle the old switches out of the round slot on the harness and snap the new ones end. Is that correct? Anybody have a problem doing that? I don't want to break them when I snap the new ones in. It looks like they are in there pretty tight. And thanks for all the info. This is really good stuff.

This is wild! I have the same issue. I removed the console, pushed the tabs back down flattened out the plastic weld that came loose. Now the bulb does fit snug with everything reinstalled almost perfectly. The problem I’m having is that when pushing the switch in/out I get only flicker and the other lights are sometimes affected. The light does stay on when I continually push it in. I think the to switch button is toast.

Thanks for this thread. While I was installing LED lights into the passenger side map light, I somehow bumped the switch out of place. If I remove the metal plating, I am hoping the switch will drop down. I guess my question is; am I going to have to take off the entire overhead console to put the switch back into place?

I'm about to replace the map lights on my 18 with LED bulbs.

Is there a procedure to reduce potential damage to the switches? Make sure they are all off before removing the bulb and installing the new one?

    What a great thread.

Use a good quality led bulb. Make sure the light is off when replacing. Shorting the terminals is what causes the switch to fail. It's the weak link and fails before the fuse blows.

It went well. I replaced the front two map lights and the rear dome lights.

I rolled down the windows because it was hot.

I got in and hit the lock button. Keys out of the ignition. Lights went out.

I was very light handed with it. I made sure to use only enough force to get the bulbs set.

The hardest part was getting the old bulbs out. They were tight. I wrapped a small piece of gorilla tape to them and they came out.

    So far so good.

Still the most detailed write up! Much appreciated.

On the OP: "Also found that the light connector popped off of one of its plastic numbs. With some pressure on the top it pops back into place" - Are those copper connectors broken on the sides? Mine looks similar to that 6th photo, causing flickering in the bulb. Debating whether the copper connections should be soldered or simply pressed back onto the tiny plastic numb mount.
