So I found this in a tree outside my house two days ago. The picture doesn't do it justice—this thing is the size of a volleyball. I've been researching the best way to take care of it but I'm thinking I might just hire a pro to deal with it. Has anyone tackled something like this and/or have any advice??

We have one the same size. As of now we are leaving it. They are paper wasps

Here is a quote about them.

"One of the most surprising facts about paper wasps is that they can benefit your garden. They sometimes feed on nectar, which helps with pollination, though they’re not nearly as effective as fuzzy-bodied bees. Additionally, adult paper wasps will often chew up those nuisance caterpillars in order to feed their wasp larvae"

Haha, I definitely thought of that, but the stuff I was reading said DO NOT use fire as it just pisses them off even more.

If you do decide to remove it, maybe hire someone that will actually move it instead of killing them.

They are important for our environment.

Wear a ski mask / long sleeves and cut the limb its on. Pick up the opposite end of the limb and quickly sling it over the fence into your neighbors yard.

I don't know what these are, but it's in a tree in a little grass strip between my and my neighbor's houses. We "take turns" mowing that strip, and he's the one that actually found it by accidentally brushing up against the tree while mowing the other day. That pissed them off and he got stung pretty bad, so I don't think these are nice wasps.

Also, I just mainly don't want my son getting attacked if he's playing outside.

Only on accident. It was not pleasant! I had a nest on a satellite antenna. I was doing maintenance, didn't see it. Went to cycle the antenna and WHAM. After a shot of benadryl and sleep, those mean SOBs came back. The environmental health folks came out with a soap cannon of some type and nailed them with it. Problem solved and lesson learned!

ETA, mine were Hornets, same kind of nest.

I didn't say they are nice. They will sting you if threatened or pissed off.

Just please try to find someone who will do the right thing.

Yikes, that is a monster nest!

I also vote to go with a pro. If you make one wrong move trying to get rid of them, it may be a hospital trip...

Also they will abandon the nest and die off this winter. Only the queen will live and make a nest somewhere else next season.
The presence of the nest will prevent wasps from making a nest near by next season. They only use a nest once.

You know what, I just assumed they were wasps but I'm pretty sure they're hornets after Googling it. They're black and look like "bald faced hornets".

If you knock their nest out of the tree, will they abandon it after a day or two??? Just avoid going near the downed nest until they abandon it.

Maybe, but there are kids in our cul-de-sac and I don't want to create a dangerous situation for them. My neighbor has kind of volunteered to tackle it since it's between both our houses, but I don't think he has a solid plan.

I stepped on one hornet last year barefooted and couldn't wear a shoe on that foot for two weeks due to the swelling and pain.
I can't even imagine multiple stings from one of those evil things!

Yeah, when my neighbor got stung it started swelling and spreading on his back. He wasn't sure if he was allergic but his wife took him to get some Benadryl or something that night. He said he was fine yesterday, but he said it felt like he got shot.

I don’t know if this works on hornets and wasps like it does on bees but soapy water kills bees instantly. A 5 gal bucket about half ful. Light enough to sling. Put some regular dish soap, don’t be shy. Ant sling it on em. Kills bee hives instantly.
If a guy will come remove them, great. If not , kill em.
I’m allergic to bees. Still won’t kill em unless they’re making my home theirs.

As long as they are not Yellow Jackets. They can inflict a lot of damage in a very short time. Once one stings you, the others are drawn to the pheromones left from the first sting. They don't quit.

    2 ideas:
    1) Tie a couple pingpong paddles to broom sticks, one for each hand. Hit that sucker with a good rock and go to battle.
I suggest that you plan an escape route in advance. Nearest creek or swimming pool, for example.
    2) the pump type spray cans we used for concrete form release and cure can be filled with gasoline and pumped up make pretty effective flame throwers. You just have to keep squeezing the lever before the flames get to the nozzle or it goes out

Reminder: Dale is a PROFESSIONAL exterminator, lol
