    Hey Tundra Owners,

Do you have a recommendation on an oil filter wrench. I have read some bad reviews on some and so I'm a little hesitant and buying 1 before the first oil change.

Welcome, your first oil change is free isn't it? The first 3 were for me.

Get a metal one from local parts store, the "beefier" the better.

The Motivx is the one I have and it is very well built (forged aluminum). You should not have any issues with it as long as you own your truck.

    Too many…scratch that…not done yet.
    This^^^^^
Also...check and follow the torque specs...especially with the plastic housing.

The Motive wrench is good, best to change out the plastic cap and get the metal one on Amazon or I’ve seen them at local parts stores. Wrench matters a lot less with the metal cap.

Gentlemen, I have been having my oil and filter changed for several years at a business that started out very well in the beginning. Having changed hands three times in the last two years, I have became dissatisfied with their services and increased prices. I have been told that there are a couple of seals that have to be installed properly or the filter will leak. Is this true? If so, can some one give instructions to avoid this problem? Is there any thing else I need to purchase other than what is shown here? Thank you for any help, James.

James, The above suggestions are great, look into purchasing the metal filter housing and Motivx wrench, I have both. There are 2 o-ring seals included with every Toyota filter element. Replace both of them at each oil change, instructions on box, very simple, just coat the o-rings with fresh oil at time of installation and torque per the specification. I have never had a leak.

I agree as well. I drive 150 miles a day so my oil changes are about every 5 weeks. I installed the metal cap and use both the metal wrench that fits the slots or the socket style that fits the bottom of the cap. My favorite tool was the drain valve that screws into the bottom of the filter to drain it before you remove it. Saves a lot of messy oil leaking all over your hands. I got mine on Amazon. You might check into that.

    Welcome from Texas.

I purchased my filter wrench from walmart costing me less than 5 bucks along with a 27mm socket which was 8 bucks. Purchased Mobil one synthetic 0-20w also and will be installing a fumoto valve to help make it easier for future oil drains like I did on my tacoma. Hope this helps.

Put a quality oil in and do your inspection at 5k miles, change at 10k miles. I have been running Liqui Moly in my personal truck, I have sent samples out at both 5k, 10k, and 15k for all them to come back exactly the same. So I stick to the 5k inspection and 10k change per the owners manual. I also have the Fumoto valve which is awesome!

The drain plug on the filter that takes the 3/8" extension is apparently tighter than the filter housing, I think it may have come out the first time but every other oil change I have just used the 3/8" extension to remove the filter housing.

I believe the torque spec on the filter drain is 9lbs and the filter housing is 18lbs
