I was quoted $1100 parts and labor. I’ll probably end up doing it, I just hope it feels like stock power for DD.

If I were you (and I was in a similar situation and just pulled the trigger on a 4wd:spending:) I’d do it and did lol if I remember I’ll let you know my lift gears and tires are schedualed tentatively for an August 20 install. I have a new all stock 18 off-road.

Price seems about what I’ll be paying. 1300 plus about 840 labor for front and rear. Although you may be able to find a cheaper place or wait for a deal to buy and save a few hundo probably. I’d say 9 would be great installed 1100 prolly about average

You only live once right fuck it do what makes you happy while you can if you can.

Jesus lord this thread is so full of retard... i run 37's and went from 4.30's to 4.88's and the truck is completely different. And you all are talking about 4.88's with 33's and not feeling a change. You either are clueless or dont have a clue how any of this stuff works.

If you are 2wd and need gears here https://www.rogue-offroad.com/product-p/kss2t94.htm 725$ for the rear gear master install kit. im sure you can shop around for a little cheaper.

install on rear for tundras is super simple for shops because the entire diff comes out of the housing and the gears can all be done on a bench in less than 2 hrs. A shop for just rear gear should be 3-400$ for install. it gets pricey when you do the front, lot more involved and if you are doing a locker or LSD

If you dont need a locker or lsd then dont worry about it.

And to who ever said lockers are "only for rock crawling" clearly doesnt understand lockers. they can be used in any conditions from sand, mud, snow or any other situation where traction to both wheels is required. Please dont trash this board up with misinformation and wildly inaccurate opinion.

Now this is what I want to hear. Definitely going 488's now.

Are the higher highway RPM's an issue at all?

I drove 70mph on the highway and went down a gear to see if I can tell a difference when the truck is a few 100 RPM's higher and it didn't seem to bother me just not sure if its the same effect as the 488's.

the rpms at 80mph is like 2200 in 6th. I am just happy the truck is back in the powerband where its supposed to be, and the truck doesnt search for gears anymore.

4.88's are totally worth every penny.

Geared and rear locked w/37's. RPM's aren't even noticeable with calibration and my driving, only the ease of the right pedal. It's still a gas hog though.

4:88 will bring you back to stock. It will definitely help but wont make your truck a completely different truck like some people exaggerating clueless. Your goal is to bring it back to what it was so 488 is the solution.

Air locker won't provide a noticeable difference since its only used for traction when stuck in the extreme conditions, LSD is a better option for 2wd truck since the owners typically don't go to 4x4 extremes.

If the truck still feels sluggish for you after 4:88 then SC is the next step.

this is the best ive seen in this thread cheers sir! and 112% agree. i hope no one thinks i was saying its drastic. just for me going 4.30's to 4.88's on 37's is right back to stock level. Which IMO is perfect.

Unsprung weight will rob a lot of power. If you get crazy with it you might want to consider a brake upgrade as well.

    Amen...

I will say that with 37’s on my truck... it’s not back to stock.. it still feels like it’s missing some get up BUT ITS 100% better than the 4.30’s I had with the 37’s. That was terrible.. if and when the 5.29’s come out.. I’m all over that!! Good talk everyone :spending:

2WD is always faster on the street.
Less weight, less drivetrain loss, less rotational mass. Maybe your buddy has an exhaust and that made it "feel" faster. Maybe if you look around you will find a few hidden K&N stickers. ;)

1st gen guy with 33" tires. When I put in 4.56 gears and LSD my truck woke up, it's a very big difference.

Based on a chart I saw on here, 4.88s put you as close to stock as possible with 37s.
Why would someone want 5.29s unless you were maybe on 38s or 40s?

I had 4.88s with 35s, although it was great and I noticed the acceleration, my RPMs were higher on highway driving.
Now that I have 37s, the RPMs are back at factory levels or close

The truck pretty much accelerates the same too. Initially I had Toyo MT 35s which are almost the same weight as my Nitto Ridgegrappler 37s

From what I have read here, my stock 5.7L 4.30 gear combination is perfect for 2WD riding on 32" or smaller tires. If that's true, then all I need to do is add an Auburn LSD and skip the gear change.

I have found the LSD at a fair price, but I'm not sure what's included in the installation kit. Is there a complete installation kit available for the LSD?

OP does your 2WD truck and your buddies 4WD truck both have the 5.7 V8? Could be the issue.

Yes both have the 5.7 V8. I noticed a significant change after disconnecting the battery overnight. Maybe its just my driving habits but it feels much better now.

That would make more sense! Thanks. Would you happen to know of a place to get a good deal on the 4.88 nitro and Auburn LSD?

Keep in mind the 5.29s are the same price with sdhq so if you’ve thought about 37s you can make the jump now....;)

I waited and got the deal in February (2018) when businesses are slow and hurting for cash flow.

Thanks Y'all! i'll keep a look out around that time. Is there a specific store you got them at? Also with the 4.88 and 35s how was the acceleration? Would y'all say it was back to a normal stock tundra with stock tires kind of power or would you say it has a little more or little less??
