Sounds like the RD is for you.

I had mine set up for 125 yards, and used an AimPoint.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to replace my AR and AimPoint since the horrific boating accident off the coast of Somalia.

Before I went boating with @ColoradoTJ I had a Leupold Mk AR 1-4 firedot scope on my AR. It was the perfect compromise. On one power with the firedot it was exactly like a red dot, on 4 power I was able to shoot out past 500 yards accurately.

Really just depends on how you plan to use it and how good your eyes are?

Most of my AR's have RDS's because I find them more then sufficient for short range defensive type shooting which is primary what I do with my AR's. I do have a "Reece" type build that does have a variable scope and match grade 2-stage trigger and that is what I use when shooting for small groups or longer range.

The problem with most variable scopes (the ones that are worth having anyway) is that they are relatively heavy and can be very expensive. The problem with RDS's is they are not great for "precision" shooting if that's what you are into and can be problematic if you have an astigmatism?

I have a Vortex Strike Eagle 1x6 on an AR 10 and love it. I've had Eotech, Nikon m223, and primary arms red dots on AR 15s in the past. Currently running irons but my plans are to buy at least 1 more strike eagle

Primary arms has magnified red dots or acss reticles for great prices. I’m most likely going to pick up a 2x soon.

    +1 for vortex strike eagle.

Got a killer deal on it a couple years ago through optics planet. I did the online chat with them and got the 1-6 and the vortex mount for $300 otd.

Learn how to to shoot it and you can hit a target at 500 yards with iron sights in the prone position. Then you can save a bunch of money. Just saying

It's all shooter's preference. Not one of the guys I shoot with uses a red dot on a centerfire cal AR. That being said, a few and myself to soon be included use red dots on pistol cal AR's which is huge fun inside of 100 yards. My older eyes like a bit more magnification then what my 19 year olds need to if I'm shooting inside of 300 yards with a 5.56 I like the Nikon BLACK FORCE1000 1-4 scope with illumination which I only seem to use when hog hunting in the late eve. Great scope, very clear and backed by Nikon. Definitely worth checking out.

If anyone is looking for a red dot check out the sig romeo5. I've been back and forth on what optic to run on a specific AR and the Sig seems like a winner. For the price I figured it was a safe bet. $118 new with 2 mounting options.

Because my M14 is more accurate than my ARs, I use an EOTech...
it's 1 MOA center dot reticle is fast & precise well beyond 400 yards.

    1) Don't buy cheap optics...they are a terrible investment. If you can't afford what you want, keep saving your money. Buy once, cry once.

    2) I recommend Aimpoint, Eotech, or Trijicon red dots out to approximately 150 yards (depending on your eyes). These optics are combat proven and won't let you down.

    3) A quality 1-4x scope is also a good option for up close work and distance. Look at the Steiner P4Xi. I own several and it is quite simply the best glass you can buy for the money. It also features a red dot that is daylight visible.

    Good luck...

For some reason, anything under 100yds I am fond of plain ol' iron sights...you know...to get that whole battlefield of vision.
Over 100yds...scope it with a mildot or crosshairs...no battery stuff. :infantry:

Have a wyndham flat top. Put a Simmons on top and red dot co witnessed at 45 degrees on the side. At 50 yards with the top scope the holes kiss, adjusted and hit approx. 1/4 inch low at 50 yards. At 100 yds. the holes go crazy, I suspect ammo. On the red dot at 45 degrees the windage and elevation go out the window as far as adjustment (read can't do it). I have had folks say its the scope, hard to believe, but I have less that 200.00 in the scopes, rings and red dot. Before I spend a lot more money on scopes I will expect tighter groups at 100 yds and will go from there.

28C45020-D471-4BDD-B2C5-8B6FFACB31F4.jpg I have the Primary Arms ACSS gen2 1-6x. I’m pretty happy with it. At 1x it’s very much like a red dot with nice eye relief and easy target acquisition. Switch to 6x and you can easily hit targets 300+ yards out. Best of both worlds at a price point that’s hard to beat.

My "Truck gun" is a no nonsense 10.5" barrel plain Jane with Daniel Defense irons. At 80 yds standing I was hitting an 8" target every shot. Nothing to brag about I know but I'm happy with that for now.

I prefer iron sights, but my eye-sight is not sharp without glasses.

Without glasses the front post is clear, but the target is out of focus. With glasses the front post is fuzzy, and the target is clear. Both the red dot & target are crystal clear when I wear glasses.
