Depends on locality. I'd get a fine here in Aurora. 110 gallons doesn't go far at all. The thinking is that rain runoff can't be diverted in some areas. It must be allowed to run off. There are drought striken areas here where farmers and ranchers need that water to make it to streams. If you live off grid you can get permits to collect rain water for potable use.

I can drill for water on my property down south but $10 to $20 per foot and water table is around 130 ft. Small submersible pump is great but you need a well and Aurora,CO for example hasn't allowed well drilling permits in decades. You could check your local codes to see if a well permit can be had.

Not sure the amount of your water bill; do not believe it would be worth will in our area. Monthly water bill usually $200ish in summer with sprinklers and pool, under $100 in other months. Payback would be long time.

I have 3 45 gallon barrels tied together fed by one of my main gutter downspouts that drains 1/2 of my house roof. I use one of these in the downspout set near the top of the barrels to auto-fill without overfilling.

    https://www.amazon.ca/14209-Mystic-...RJVU?th=1&locale=en-CA&ref=pd_sl_5vzhmmth7s_e

I put the 3 barrels upright on a sturdy wooden stand and just put a 3/4” ball valve and elbow outlet for filling watering cans for our small veggie garden. It works OK, but will probably be 10 years before the savings pays for the fittings and parts used to set it up.

Since it is rainwater without any chlorine or other nastyness, thick algae does grow rampant in the insides of the barrels as well. Fine for the garden from a watering can but would make it challanging to pump from.

Ugh! Awake reading this now because heat in my room awakened me 3 1/2 hours earlier than the alarm is set.

Bree, if it's generally pretty arid and hot where you are, and if you buy the black rain-barrels (ugly!), shouldn't be too much algae. My observations and experience (here in SoCal, where it's low humidity). Algae could definitely be a problem if you install light-coloured barrels that allow light to penetrate.

I'm into this topic; thanks for starting this thread. Please keep us posted.

This thread brings back memories. I grew up in Thailand drinking rain water. I looked into collecting it for watering plants but then I could possibly be breaking some local laws I gave up.

I was in a hurry with my last post. My new phone tries to read my freaking mind. Seriously though. If you have a shallow water table a small well wouldn't break the bank. Small submersibles are relatively inexpensive. Not much electric usage and free water. Would pay for itself over time like solar. Your first link was a pretty good DIY setup if you can do it!

A neighbor not far from my off grid property uses a cistern similar to the pic. Water/snowmelt is collected from his roof gutters. Uses a solar powered pump to provide potable water to his small house and water for his garden. Kind of cool...[IMG]

I grew up in the country with an above ground cypress cistern that was open on top, and fed by windmill. Once in a blue moon you'd notice a funny taste, and smell. Can't tell you how many times we climbed up on top to find a dead hawk, or buzzard floating DOA. :puke:

Yes, my barrels are translucent white / clear, were from bulk carwash soap. I have heard that keeping the light out helps immensely. The free barrels were why I did all this in the first place though. :)

I know nothing about this but it seems like a good idea if you can set up a good system. I think here in Oregon the government owns the natural water cycle, so any precipitation falling from the sky belongs to the state and thieves will be prosecuted.

I have a neighbor that does this, not sure what hes doing with it cause his yard looks like shit.

When i was young, several people had wells for irrigation. Not sure how deep the water table is here though, it may not be practical.

Stop in at your local hd. They should have everything you need for what you want do.

You do have gutters on your house?
Simple cut into a downspout. Add a diverter and rain barrel.

This thread is old I know but figured I would chime in seeing as your a fellow Texan. My father in law installs rain water collection systems all over the state. If interested I could get you in touch. As far as I know there are no laws on how much you can harvest. His garden has 3 1500 gallon tanks tied together with a little gas powered pump. His dogs are watered by 3 50 gallon drums off his garage also. We installed 2 4000 gallon tanks at our local hospital so the paramedics could utilize rain water for Washing equipment. It’s definitely a smart investment here in Texas.

Don’t you ever get concerned about stagnant water that you use for the dogs? Not sure how much rain water you get or if the collected water is treated.

This is why it was illegal in CO to collect water. Could you imagine how dry Kansas would be if everyone in CO collected whatever they wanted?

Kansas has sued Colorado plenty of times over water and won.

So I asked him about it. Only one tank is plumbed. He used the setup for some shows he did. Now it waters the dog.

No Reports of stagnant water. Dogs haven’t complained. Our part of Texas is very dry.

What bike is in you picture? I’m going to check out a 16’ 200 xcw this weekend. If I don’t like it I’m going to purchase a 350

My dog doesn’t say much either. Never know exactly what he's saying. Lol

    The bike is a 2017 450XC-F.

Interesting bike, not sure how I feel about it. The suspension is a little soft for me, and being used to MX tracks, that’s probably why I think this way. Power is very strong, but controllable through the power band.

At the moment, I wish the 500 would have been purchased.
