    Very helpful post.

Batch 1 of newbie equipment showed up today. Traction boards, snatch strap, fire extinguisher, shackles and a few other pieces of gear for the Tundra. I can get towed out if a friendly off roader comes by.

Winch and associated gear is next on the bigger purchase list.

Good call on the YouTube videos.

Excited like a kid on Christmas morning and planning our first roadie for a 4x4 destination.

Awesome man. Yea that first batch of recovery and off-road gear, there is nothing like it.

Honestly unless you get into some sort of real pickle, if you are being cautious I doubt you will get into a situation where you cannot self recover with a shovel and traction boards. But a winch is just a nice ‘peace of mind’ tool to have. Just make sure you don’t spin your tires on those traction boards, they will melt.

Welcome from Thornton. The book you got will help more than you think. It's an awesome guide. Don't forget to get the 2nd half of the guide book for northern Colorado. Having one without the other is like eating fish without hush puppies. It just ain't right!

Where about in North Cacalacky are you from? Whiteville native here.

thanks -- will do. actually, the wife is reading it right now while I'm multitasking between a conference call and posting on Tundras.com :D

lived in Fuquay-Varina and worked in Raleigh for 7 years before moving to CO. before that home was southwest Virginia for a few decades.

Damn, I didn't know Matt Peterson was co-authoring these books now. He is the owner of Rock Ware and builds some pretty awesome King of the Hammer rigs....and is a driver.

Welcome from eastern CO! For off-roading, I’d think sliders and skids are definitely top of the list. They’re on the list for me, won’t be taking mine out into the mountains until at least the sliders are on. If you’re gonna be spending time off-road, I’d recommend hitting up ToyTec for a lift and some bigger tires.

That Guide to the Backroads is a great book to start. Try the green trails first and work your way up to the blue trails. What you'll start realizing is the Tundra has an extremely long wheelbase. Definitely not the easiest rig to wheel. Before you even attempt a blue trail, I would get a lift, 35" MT tires, sliders and skids. If you can't get a toolbox, a couple of totes strapped down works pretty good.AAB2378B-8E01-49F2-8D23-57664F351137.jpg

Oh, and at the bottom of this post, there's a list of basic essentials for wheeling.

thanks. I was getting the impression from the book and threads here that my stock Tundra would be fine on some of the blue routes (e.g. Alpine Loop).

Not sure about Colorado, but here in CA, a stock tundra especially with steps/nerf bar, wouldn't make it through a blue trail without a very high chance of damage. Like I said before, our trucks have a real long wheelbase and you'll hit those steps on basically anything larger than a speed bump. Sliders are a must if you plan to run anything other than green trails. The first dent the sliders prevent pretty much pays for itself.

I just moved back to GA after living in Alma, CO, for 5 years and I could contribute to all of your questions but will refrain on most due to the over abundance you’ve probably already received, BUT...I can assist on tire recommendations for CO winter and summer driving. There are a multitude of options but I chose to go safe with summer tires in case I wasn’t to buy winter tires when the time rolled around. My summer tires were great in CO winter but I chose a dedicated winter tire for driving over Hoosier Pass everyday.

Winter: Nokian Tires have always been my go to, no matter which model

Summer: TOYO C/Ts are the aggressive snowflake rated version that is more than A/T but doesn’t lose snow effectiveness like the R/T nor M/T

There are many options out there but after managing a fleet of 1/2 ton trucks and running personal tires, I’d repeat my process every year if I still lived there.

Hope this helps a little and gives you more to think about

Alpine loop has a lot of tight switchbacks that is not ideal for a long wheelbase vehicle. You can do it, but you will be like this:

And you will be crowned “that guy” on the trail.

Nice. You will like it out here. There are mosquitos here but no skeeters. They don't get that big.

I have many family members in Clayton, Garner, and Nightdale. Spent some time at Shearon Harris.

Watch out for this site though. It will literally drain you wallet by doing mods. Do one and your hooked! It's worse than crack.

    Yo, @hokiehead
Having run some more Tundra friendly trails from the Silverton area to Summit county, get sliders! A full skid plate setup is also my recommendation along with the rear diff breather modification. It’s easy and will save you some unnecessary extra money spent. Also, ABS guards from @sdhq_offroad will help in CO. Even on “blue” trails you’re looking at obstacles that these important pieces of gear will give you peace of mind, and protection if you’re new to the off road game (as I was). Your Suburu was a champ, but with the right lift, tire, armor setup you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it earlier. CO has good trails even if they’re not in a guide book.

It’s cheaper than crack if you smoke properly cuz you can actually stop making mod purchases when you’re “thinking clearly” :anonymous:
