My Mom and I are heading to Alaska tomorrow for a week.

Going to do a plane tour of Denali and taking a train to Seward. We are staying in Anchorage.

Any other sights we have to see?

While in Anchorage hike up Flat Top Mt Trail. Great views. Not too difficult. A must do. Most tourists don't know.. http://www.alaska.org/detail/flattop-mountain

Stop at Tastee Freez on Raspberry Rd. Been there since the 60's and while there checkout Kinkaid State Park nearby. It's on Cook Inlet. Full of moose. Big ones.
Checkout Lake Hood seaplane base near the airport. You can drive right in but you sometime have to move over to let a bush plane pass. Moose there too.

You have already left but my wife and I are leaving for Anchorage on July 7. Taking the Alaska Railroad up through Denali, staying there for a couple of nights and ending up in Fairbanks. Will fly home from there on the 14th.

I want to go on a float plane ride while we are in Anchorage. Has to have a radial engine (or two). I will look one up when we are there (weather needs to cooperate).

Alaska was a blast. The air plane tour around Denali was probably the coolest thing I have done to date. C435E5F7-834E-458F-9459-AF0B9FAE5789.jpgMy Mom and I in front of Mt Denali. We landed on a glacier. Fun stuff.

Dan if you go on a float plane ride let me know how it goes. We went down to Homer on our last day and saw a few planes. I debated calling them but we were in a time crunch and my wallet was feeling pretty light.

We took the Alaska RR from Anchorage to Seward then took a marine tour and took the train back. Gold class was the way to go. We were served a meal down below and had a bartender in our car. 2176614E-1979-4566-9A28-32A498E4852E.jpg The dome cars offer a great view. Bloody Mary’s made the trip a bit more fun.

Excellent, thanks! Yes, we are booked on the Goldstar service, can't wait. I hope the weather cooperates for good photo opportunities. I bought a new 70-200 zoom lens for my Canon camera just for this trip (plus extra 32 gig memory cards). I'm an inactive private pilot with some time in radial aircraft but I have never been on a float plane. Wife may or may not want to go but a ride is very high on my list. We have 3 days in Anchorage before departing on the Alaska Railroad with nothing on the schedule so I hope to make it work during this time span.

    Great photos, BTW!

The Salmon will be running when you are up there. There is a hatchery just north of downtown that they go back to spawn. We didn’t see any but I’m sure you will if you want to check it out.

It takes them 3 weeks to summit and come down. 20 some hours of day light. No trees and storms all the time. I don’t think I have what it takes. But boy would it be cool.

When you are in Anchorage the 49th State Brewary and the Moose’s Tooth are good spots to eat. The 49th State has a great patio overlooking the ocean.

We chartered a Beaver from Rust's Flying Service for a 30 minute flight out of Lake Hood:

    IMG_5283.jpg

    IMG_5291.jpg

We arrived in Anchorage on Saturday 7-7 but got weathered that afternoon (high winds but clear). Got weathered the next day for higher winds but it was cloudy also (high enough ceiling). We were finally able to go on Monday but it was still a bit blustery. No problem for me but my wife started feeling a little green around the gills.

We headed west over the tundra and made a touch and go on Keyhole lake, then back to base. It was really cool, pilot was great, I sat in the right seat and we talked pilot talk the whole way.

Then, on Wednesday I went on a one hour flight in a Piper Navajo out of Denali (followed the Alaska Range out to Mt. Denali). Most fantastic aviation event I EVER experienced (and I have a long list of great aviation events to compare to).

I took about 100 pictures but none of them do justice to the breathtaking grandeur of the experience. I can post a few here if desired.
