tailgate caps

who make an aftermarket tailgate cap/protector for the tundra?? so done with the plastic crap toyota has on there. I end up tearing it off every winter.

 

What are you doing that’s causing the cap come off? Why is it only in the winter? Not being a dick, just curious. I always felt that the ultimate in protection would be linex and then a plastic liner on top including the tailgate protection. Maybe that would help you?

 

i bought some knock offs on ebay. was pretty cheap. Since it gets beat up, I change them once every 2 or 3 years to keep it clean looking

 

I am loading and unloading a snowmobile. Currently i have a spray in liner. @TheBeast where did you find them on ebay. I haven;t been able to located the knock offs.

 

@KB Voodoo makes them for tacomas from steel. Maybe he has something up his sleeve for us?

 

messaged him back in March and said he had nothing for the tundras. would be nice if someone had a metal one though.

another option would be to spray with Line X the top of the tailgate

 

I'm in for a metal cap AND a metal tailgate protector...preferably diamond plate aluminum. Please post if you find something.

 

I’d be willing to bet if you hit up a metal fabrication shop or welder, that they would be able to custom make you one.

 

I used to run a setup on my work trucks that solves your problem. I wish I had a picture. I had a diamond plate that completely covered the tailgate with an aluminum angle welded to the plate that wrapped around the top of the tailgate. I just installed them with pop rivets. These held up to being bumped by forklifts loading, unloading and dragging fabricated steel parts and loaded pallets.

Are you guys looking for gen 2 or gen 3? Or both?
I'd previously looked at doing it, but never finalized the plan. This would be a full panel of around 1/8" aluminum that covers the whole inside of the tailgate, and top lip and would require drilling to install.

 

3rd gen for me and yes what you describe is what i would want in diamond plate black annodized aluminum. Please sign me up.

- CNC lasercut & bent
- countersunk stainless steel hardware
- outdoor rated polyurethane foam gasket

Finish:
- textured black powdercoat
- black color-matched screws

Any chance of a lip coming back over the tailgate?.

I hate having to grab that thin piece of plastic to make sure my gloves or hands don't scratch up the tailgate.

 

While it’s possible to do this, it would require a lot more work and add significantly to the cost.

3rd Gen Tundra tailgates have a contoured top edge, so a straight bend wouldn’t follow it very well.

If there is enough demand, I can make some with a lip that that conforms to the tailgate.
