    Howdy all,

I've owned my truck for about 6 years now and this problem has gone unsolved since I bought it. Here are the details:

    2008 toyota tundra double cab/dbl sr5

The rear personal light (dome) only works when I use the switch on the light.
    • It will not turn on when I set the Interior light main switch to the on position.
    • It will not turn on when the Interior light main switch is set to the middle position and the doors are open.

I really have no idea where to start with this troubleshooting. If the interior lights fuse was blown, the other lights would not function. According to my research, all of these lights are on the same fuse.

Just to be clear, the front personal (map) lights and door lights work as expected.

I actually thought the rear interior light (dome) was manually operated only. That is, until one day I had the back door open to load some groceries and my passenger slammed the door really hard on the other side of the vehicle. When he did, the dome light turned itself on. That's when I realized I had a problem.

I've google quite a bit to figure out this problem, but really didn't find anything that describes this exact problem. I get the feeling that it may be the Interior light main switch, but I wanted to get some opinions or hopefully information from someone who has solved this problem before.

I was thinking it must be the switch too. I Haven't looked, but should be relatively easy to get to and jump some wires to verify...

That's weird. It sounds like it could be a switch. With that switch set to the middle, it should come on when door is open. Also your cargo light should come on as well if set to middle. Have you checked the cargo light. Does it shut off after you shut door, there is a time delay with both lights. Don't know what else. Sorry I can't give ya a better answer. Keep us updated

I guess the first thing I'd try is to use a multimeter to check if there's power coming into the switch.

    was the bulb replaced?

take the cover off and put a meter leg on each side of the bulb holder with the switch in the on position meter set on vdc and bulb removed you should see power there.
while you have access take a close look and make sure there is no oxidation on the terminals if so clean with a scouring pad or equivalent.

I plan to pull the switch and doing some testing based this feedback. If it would stop raining in Houston for a few minutes.

I have not replaced the bulbs and don't know if it was previously done. However, since the light turns on when I press manual switch (on the dome light), I assume the bulbs are good. Based on the bulb's kelvin, they look to be standard bulbs and not LEDs.

I pulled the dash switch this morning and used an extra wire to test the connections on the plug. The behavior was the same, all interior lights worked except the dome light. The problem is elsewhere. I've been hunting around for information and downloaded a wiring diagram for my truck's year. Unfortunately, I am not finding the information useful. Aside from pulling the interior trim and tracing the wires, I am unsure as to my next step.

Here's where I should throw out the disclaimer that I'm an idiot and you shouldn't listen to me.

Does the light come on when you take a small piece of wire and jump from the power in to either of the other wire ports? If so, the switch could be faulty. If not, may be at the light itself. If it flickered when the door slammed, may be a loose connection?

I used a wire jumper on the plug that connects to the switch. I tested several connections. While I am unsure of which leads does what, I was able to get cabin lights to illuminate with the jumper. All except for the dome light. Which is the same behavior when I use the switch. Whatever the problem is, it's not the switch or, at least, not only the switch.

Crap, missed that the forward lights were working off the switch. Connection at the dome light look good?
