well for one, you can pick what rear end you want in your F150. It sucks that all tundras are geared for pulling. it makes a bit more sense to let the customer pick their gears; for highway commuting, towing, or what suits their needs.

i agree with what you're saying about compression ect. toyota knows how to make stuff that doesnt break. ppl dog on the F150 cause of the crappy V6 they have polluted the market with. The 5.0 in the F150 is equal to (or better than) the 5.7 when you look at the package as a whole, and when ordering an F150 it's only an extra $800. for that reason i think it invalidates the whole "ecoboost sucks, so f150 sucks" argument.

    https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2018-toyota-tundra-57l-4x4-double-cab-test-review

    https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2018-ford-f-150-50l-v-8-4x4-supercrew-review

C&D lays out a lot of the specs, and in all of them, the F150 wins, braking, acceleration... the F150 has adaptive steering which makes getting around in it feel like you're driving a car, rather than lumbering through a parking lot in the tundra, feels more like a school bus... everyone's quick to dog on the F150 and post cutsie pictures but until they get out there and put themselves in a platinum, or king ranch with a 5.0, they simply dont know the market...

im sure the OP is painfully aware of this and it's a hard choice! for me, i need a vehicle that lives a drama free life... is why i left ford.

3” lift, black step bars, aftermarket wheels, LT305/55R20 was this way when I brought it.
I haven’t had my Tundra long but it is a great truck to drive, not the best on gas. But that is only up to where you live, if it is Oklahoma and flat gas mileage is not but. And the get up and go is a different story, But I love driving it every day-
I really didn’t need a truck, but it something no house hold should do with out. I got the 1794 loaded really didn’t need, always worried I am going to mess it up

No it doesn't. Name one person that's ever said "Damn Jersey, I wish I had 3.73's in my truck rather than my 4.10's!"

    - Said no one, ever.

for those who commute / daily drive this pig on the highway, turning 2000+ RPM sucks... if you buy an F150 you get to pick the rear that's right for your application. id have bought a 3.31 rear in a new york minute. plan on pulling a boat... never.

Well, I did. I love my Tundra, and I do mean LOVE, but I wish I had either an 8 speed transmission or 3.73 axle so my daily commute wouldn't hurt the pocket book so much. I think the 8 speed would be best though.

4.30 is a lot like 4x4, sure you don't need it most of the time, but it sure as hell is awesome to have when you need it

I’m a fan of the six speed. Just because it becomes an eight speed doesn’t make it better in my book. It doesn’t mean you have two more gears of overdrive. Usually just means that many more gears to get to your final gear. Shifty Mcshifterton LOL

Edit: so even with more gears your final drive gear and RPM will probably be similar to a 6 speed. If you really want to change that you’d have to have that 8 speed transmission custom built with nice low gears From first through fifth then gradually get taller or smaller from sixth through eighth. The only way to really drop your RPM is to change the rear end gears. Imo

If you want to go away from the main rear end gears as detailed by the engine you have to pay for it. Same as if you want different rear end gears in the Tundra, only difference is 1 comes from the factory. Doesn't mean that much, just ask the guys who have 4.88 gears in their truck.

That's why I would prefer more gears in the trans so we can cruise at a lower RPM but still have best mode when needed

I had a old 5.4 l F150 4x4 with 3.55, 4 speed. If my memory is correct, the Tundra rpm is the same as the old ford, give or take a few %. The Tundra has an addition 100 hp, about the same torque.

I am pleased with the 6 speed and gearing.

Go read the articles of the 10 speed ford hunting gears going over speed bumps. Oh, there is a comparison of the ford 10 vs 6 speed, the 6 speed got better results. Go figure.

I’m not sure how it compares to the other models, ram, gm,etc.

The more gears, The more they will hunt and the more you will hate them. I long for the days of my old 727 torqueflite 3 speed.....

I drive highway daily with my Tundra, I'm getting 19-20mpg highway with it. So all things considered, I'm not sure I'd call it a pig, at least for a truck it's size. And cruising at about 70, the RPM's aren't above 2000.

Well, i dun did it. Pulled the trigger on a 2018 Crewmax 4x4 Limited. Funny thing sealed the deal for me. Coming out of a walgreens today I walked in front of a newer navigator as the guy started it up and it made the tin can rattle i read about on the f150 forums with the 10 speed and watched vids on YouTube. told myself it would drive me nuts hearing that everyday at startup if i ended up with one. Called toyota dealers in area, came to a price, drove out to inspect, was hassled a bit on price while closing deal but came to fair number, drove my new Tundra home. Bye to Ford for now. Hopefully this is the beginning of my drama free truck ownership with Toyota for next 15 years, probably wont be any V8s available by 2033 :)

If Ford wasnt so difficult on pricing with the remaining 2017 XLT with V8 6speed, I may have bit. Instead I got a 2018 Tundra Limited for roughly $2k more than the 2017 XLTs leftover, and that is in Texas.

My first trip on the highway more than a few miles... I drove to the corner store about 1.3 miles away then drove 90 miles, 60-70 mph, and some traffic. I got 20.8 mpg for my 90mile trip. There. Not towing anything, just some fishing equipment.

Exactly. I see zero reason for 3.31’s in our truck. If someone who wants 3.31’s to cruise a consistent 90MPH down the freeway and keep their RPM’s under 2000K you shouldn’t be driving a truck. The Tundra with its current 4.10’s does great on the highway.
The trade off for a few hundred RPM’s less going 3.31 vs stock 4.30’s shouldn’t in my opinion even be a factor. It’s not like we’re at 3500RPM at 70mph.
So you save maybe $0.20 cents a day in gas but then lose all your low end get-up?
Guess we all have trucks for different reasons. I didn’t buy a truck to cruise 90mph all day long.

Thank you Toyota for not offering the option though. That was always a pain in the ass when trying to find a used truck. Find the perfec rig, check the gear code on the door - “Shit! Damn thing has 3.30’s no wonder it’s $2000 less - nobody wants it”

in most states the speed limit is 65-70. Highway driving, without a load, at 60-70 is kind of unrealistic.

i never thought i would hear someone say "xyz manufacture offers tailored options, covered by warranty, that's dumb!" lol
