So i have read hundreds of posts on shocks and to be honest I kind of got lost with too much information. To break it down, I have the regular trd with yellow and blue shocks and cant stand them. Ultimately Im fairly positive the trd pro set up would make me happy but it seems they are too hard to find or too expensive for my taste. My shocks are too stiff and Im looking to replace with something for a mostly daily driver on road with lots of trips to the feed store and occasionally towing. I just want a reasonable upgrade that dosent jolt me every bump I hit. Its a truck and I know it handles like one but what is the ideal set up for this? Thanks for answering shock question number 10 billion !

3” or less? Eibach, BOSS, Radflo, King, Old Man EMU etc.

Thanks. But I am looking for more of a personal opinion on which one of the many brands available will feel softer on the road than what I have already. Lower on the budget scale as well.

Bilstein 6112 will be closest to a PRO ride on a budget. Lots say add a rear sway bar to smooth out the rear.

5100, 5160 although i have read the 5160 don't hold up well... on a budget, i would get the 5100 and sway bar plus 6112 for the front.
Or cruise craigslist for a set of trd pro... although that has dried up since no new pro have been sold in a year.

Is it your shocks or coils and leafs?
If you add weight to the bed does it feel better? If so I'm guessing the stiffness your feeling is the leaf springs. Idk how to test the front. The shocks control more of the rebound I believe anyway.
Also just as a quick, free, possibly fix....what PSI are you running in your tires?

I made the decision to use Bilstein 5100 front and rear. I only had time to mount the rears so far but they are a huge improvement so far. Im not sure yet if I will use stock height yet on the front or not but Im not sure if your supposed to use shims on the front for factory height or only if you go more?

If you decide to go higher using the spring perch adjustment...I would go with the lowest possible but you dont want stuff so probably stick with stock ride height. I used 5100s on my Tacoma on the middle setting and they did ride rough. Any time you compress the springs like that it'll be stiffer, even with better shocks.
Shins are to add as little more height, or can be used on one side or the other to level out any side to side unevenness. Tacomas were known to sit almost and inch lower on drivers side.
I liked the rear 5100s more than the fronts, probably because I used the fronts to compress my coil springs

Go with some Monroe Coilovers Premiums. Should hit your price point and satisfy your ‘cushy’ desire on the road.

Thanks, but I wasnt looking for a cushy ride, just shocks that didn’t biunce my coffee cup out of the holder got a few more miles in and so far the 5100 are a night a day difference over the stock. Look forward to putting the front pair on

I read your OP and saw ‘too stiff’ so recommended something soft. Thats what she didn’t say! I have the 5100’s and like them. They are a bit stiff IMO.

I have radflo 2.5 front and boss rear using the toytec kit. Way more plush than stock.

Yeah, it is really hard to judge what we all mean with trying to describe the way our shocks react. The 5100 are stiffer in all reality buy they absorb the bumps alot better by not letting truck actually move as far. I should have chosen a better way to describe what I was thinking

Bilsteins are stiff for 2 reasons, preload and their digressive valving. If your not a fan, get a shock thats valved progressively.

Yeah bud. I like the Billys. Their just different from what I had before. They tow and handle weight in bed really well, I’m discovering. Seems like it rides smoother with weight. Without weight they’re stiff and ‘sporty’ feeling.

I had 5100s on my old truck. They were set for max lift on the front end and that was a mistake, the rebound was crazy. I felt like the rears were too stiff too. Personally, I would go another route if I made a decision to get different shocks on my Tundra. Talk about making your teeth chatter.....

This was why I was hesitant on going full height up front and just went one click up. Getting that rebound from coil loading didn’t sound fun. I carry some extra weight of about 400lbs with bigger tires, side boxes, and a few other items. I like them overall. Its always an experience trying new stuff.
