Dual sport price help

I know we have a couple of motorcycle experts here. So 15yo son wants to hit the trails. No jumping or racing for now. This will be his starter bike. So I began shopping around for dual sports bike. We went around to a couple of dealers and tried them for size. We have narrowed down our search to the honda crf250l. This would be my first time motorcycle shopping and was proud to find a good deal for a brand one for 3,999.00. When we went to the dealer, salesman asked for more than 7,300 OTD. I was in shock to how the price almost doubled. I was so frustrated I did not even negotiate.

My question is when buying new bikes, what is a good price for a brand new crf250l OTD?

 

Why not buy used? You can always find barely ridden bikes for a great deal. What state are you in?

I'm looking at used bikes too. The one closest to me is 3,999.00 with only around 2000 miles for the '15 model. Is this a good deal even when it is the same msrp of a brand new one?

 

I see MSRp starting at $5149 plus $330 destination charge for the 2018 models.

I would buy used and negotiate further. Reason being he will out grow this bike and want a bigger one eventually and you won't lose too much when selling it.

 

I would also look a the CRF150F or the CRF230F that would be a perfect starter bike. Is there a reason you are looking for street legal dual sport?

Reason behind getting a dual sport is I will be using it just in case son loses interest in it.
